New DHL Western Province Currie Cup coach John Dobson has confirmed that Juan de Jongh will captain the side in this season’s tournament.
Nizaam Carr would be the likely vice-captain.
Dobson was addressing media at the High Performance Centre in Bellville on Monday and he also confirmed the appointment of Paul Treu as the defence coach for the season.
Dobson said that he would look to implement an “attacking breakdown” philosophy this season.
“Out of the 5 worst breakdown teams in Super Rugby, 4 were South African,” said Dobson.
“We’ve built a good scrum culture here but 1 of my focuses is going to be the breakdown culture.
“It’s technical. I think our guys’ spirits are willing… but we haven’t got a clear policy. We haven’t practiced it enough and we haven’t been technical enough.
“It’s a long campaign, Super Rugby and you get tired. But Currie Cup gives us an opportunity to get a breakdown culture here because we can go on as much as we like about not scoring 4 tries but without quick ball and front-foot ball it’s not going to happen.”
DHL WP will play against the Steval Pumas in Franschhoek next Saturday in a pre-season friendly.
Will be interesting to see what John Dobson can do with WP… and maybe he’s the logical choice for Super Rugby coach for the Stormers for 2016!
Cape Town – Springbok lock Pieter-Steph du Toit has confirmed his departure from the Sharks at the end of his contract, which expires in October 2015.( News24)
Welcome back in Wynland son, Riebeeck West will surely have a great reception lined up in the main street just for you!
2: Durban se mediese fondse nou uitgeput ?
PSdT can obviously sign where he sees fit, but it’s a bit of a kick in the teeth of the Sharks that the national coach sends him back to Durban for rehab, after which he is dumping them in any case.
Their medical staff is good enough for him to have them fix him.
I guess they don’t have a choice as he is still on their books till October, but IMO it’s a lousy thing to do
There is no clear indication that he will move back to Cape Town. Perhaps he is on his way to Toulon to cash in while his ( apparently fragile) body holds out.
At least he helped the Sharks to win a CC during his stay in Durban so they have at least got something out of their investment
“I have a debt to pay to a franchise that welcomed me with open arms when I was a nobody out of school, and then have stuck by me for two years when I was mostly injured,”
“I need to honour that debt and I want to.”
Gmmf if you want loyalty buy a dog.

Yep, so far nothing is confirmed except that he is leaving the Sharks….but we all know that in SA rugby there are no secrets and news leaks out like nobodies business….and usually when there’s smoke there’s fire
