Springbok scrumhalf Fourie du Preez will be sidelined for an extended period with a medial knee ligament injury.
When Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer unveiled a 49-strong squad on Saturday, a paragraph in the official media release revealed that “He suffered a knee injury while training with his Japanese club earlier this week”.
More clarity regarding Du Preez’s injury was given in Johannesburg on Monday, where it was determined that the 33-year-old former Loftus-based favourite, now contracted to Suntory Goliath in Japan, will be sidelined for between 4 to 8 weeks.
The other scrumhalves picked in the Springbok squad are Ruan Pienaar, Cobus Reinach, Faf de Klerk and Rudy Paige.
Another serious injury concern is prop Coenie Oosthuizen who had a neck operation today and will miss the Castle Rugby Championship.
Ruan Pienaar to the rescue:
He falls short of being everyone’s cup of tea, but Ruan Pienaar seems the most likely, immediate beneficiary of Fourie du Preez’s Springbok injury setback.
It was confirmed by the Springboks on Monday that the Japan-based Du Preez will miss the next 4 to 8 weeks with a medial knee ligament injury, picked up in training with his Suntory Goliath club a few days back.
A quick mathematical exercise tells you that if the 33-year-old recovers on the rosier side of that prognosis, he might be able to squeeze in some activity in the 2 Tests against Argentina (1 at the end of The Rugby Championship in Durban on 8 August, and the other a non-tournament additional fixture away a week later).
But if he requires the full 8 weeks for recovery, then Fourie du Preez is only going to return to green-and-gold duty in time for the start of the World Cup; they begin their pool journey against Japan in Brighton on 19 September.
What is certain now is that he sits out the 2 most critical Rugby Championship matches against Australia’s Wallabies (away) and New Zealand’s All Blacks on SA soil in the condensed tournament, which would have been particularly fitting examinations of his ongoing suitability to top-level rugby after many months of 1st-class idleness – even before the latest blow.
So in the shorter term, the Boks have to find a suitable alternative at No 9! Cell C Sharks’ Cobus Reinach is the incumbent, if you consider that he wore the jersey in the 12 / 6 loss to Wales at the Millennium Stadium at the end of last year.
But the 6-capper – all of them earned in 2014 – is currently among a 13-strong “rehab” squad just beneath the able-bodied party of 36 named by coach Heyneke Meyer at the weekend.
So Reinach seems unlikely to be in a position to open the Springbok season when they tackle a World XV at Newlands on 11 July.
That leaves Meyer for the time being then, with the options of Pienaar – easily closest to Du Preez for pure Test experience and game-management style – plus rookie squad call-ups Rudy Paige (Vodacom Bulls) and Faf de Klerk (Emirates Lions).
There is the chance, assuming Reinach remains a no-go for the moment, that he may take the daring, experimental step of fast-tracking either of the uncapped Super Rugby 2015 standouts, but it is difficult to look beyond 80-cap Pienaar as likely favourite for the job.
The Ulster-based customer, 31, can be a frustrating presence at times for the Springboks, as he has a fairly languid style and somehow gives the impression that he could clear the ball more smartly in times of major need.
But his kicking game and all-round footballing acumen is as well-established as that of Du Preez and his several years of nous picked up in northern hemisphere conditions stands him in good stead for European autumn involvement for the Boks, come the Rugby World Cup.
Pienaar last started for South Africa in the tight 14 / 10 defeat to the All Blacks in Wellington last year – he succumbed to injury just before halftime – and when the Springboks avenged that loss 27 / 25 in the Johannesburg follow-up, Francois Hougaard was the starting scrumhalf.
The versatile Hougaard, however, has been pointedly snubbed by Meyer after a disappointing Super Rugby campaign with the under-achieving Bulls.
You have to think, like it or not, that most signs point to Pienaar at No 9 for the next few weeks…

FdP is done, he won’t be fit enough to play in the WC
HM should rather focus on getting one of the other scrumhalves ready for it
Why isn’t Sarel Pretorius in the mix?
Fourie well past his “best By date”.
At this rate, NZ and SA will each be able to field a Full Test Team, in “The Golden Öldies Tournament” straight after the WC.
Jano Vermaak?
Agreed on Jano Vermaak. I don’t understand why he has missed out. He’d be someone I would look towards.
Thing is no discussion can really take place without addressing the elephant in the room, and that is quotas. Meyer is obligated to take at least 7 non white players with him to the WC out of 31.
When you look at the squad the following players are POC:
Elton Jantjies
Bryan Habanna
Cornal Hendriks
Zane Kirchner
Siya Kolisi
Teboho Mahoje
Tendai Mtawarira
Lwazi Mvovo
Scarra Ntubeni
Tevor Nyakane
Rudi Page
JP Pieterson
Lionel Mapoe
That’s 13 of which 7 will go, with a players like Beast, Elton, Hendriks and Trevor likely inclusions.
Players like Page become important in the final reckoning of the squad.
I’d like to see who he plays in the upcoming test and how they do, that will give us a better idea of what he is thinking
