Andries Bekker’s Springbok future appears to be in the hands of his Japanese club, the Kobelco Steelers.
Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer on Tuesday had a 1-on-1 with the tall lock to gauge his interest in and suitability to returning to green-and-gold duty this year.
Bekker, 31, had made himself unavailable for Springbok selection when he moved to Japan in 2013.
Meyer had a “good conversation” with Bekker, but the player needs to discuss the situation with the Steelers.
Bekker recently indicated that he would like to represent the Springboks again.
He played the last of his 29 Tests against the All Blacks in Johannesburg in 2012.
Wow, the desperation in Heyneke Meyer is very, very palpable!!
It would be the worst and wrongest choice in a long time to get ndries Bekker back. He was useless as a Springbok anyway, always hanging on the centre and wing and shirking vital responsibilities!
Then rather give Franco Mostert of the Emirates Lions a good go, he at least deserves it!
