Willie le Roux

Willie le Roux

It was announced yesterday that Willie le Roux has signed for the Cell C Sharks for the 2016 season of Super Rugby, after agreeing to a deal that the Cheetahs were reportedly unable to match. Le Roux will play a short stint in Japan after the World Cup but will join the Sharks after.

In other news, Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer is reportedly courting the services of Japan-based Andries Bekker and is said to be finalizing the details with his Japan club Kobelco Steelers and will be able to confirm his availability in the coming weeks.

This is excellent news for the Springboks, as there is a severe lack of depth in the No 5 department and Bekker has shown himself to be 1 of the world leading players in his position over the past years.

Vodacom Bulls based lock Flip van der Merwe is also considering a return to international rugby which will hopefully also be confirmed in the coming weeks. Van der Merwe acquitted himself well at No 5 for the Springboks in the 2013 Rugby Championship and this may be on Meyer’s mind as Pieter-Steph du Toit may not be fit in time for the announcement of the Bok squad later this year.

Meyer is clearly concerned about the spate of long term injuries to key players in the past 6 months, with doubts on the availablity of several players that are key to Meyer’s World Cup plans. There is lots of Rugby still to play this year before the World Cup in October and the coach seems to be hedging his bets on some of the “old guard” coming out of the Bok wilderness.

Morné Steyn’s impressive season for his french club Stade Francais puts him squarely in the Bok frame again, especially given the fact that his recent experience in Northern hemisphere conditions.
