Maks van Dyk
Tighthead prop Maks van Dyk has completed his move to the EP Kings, where he hopes to make an impact in the Currie Cup and Super Rugby.
Van Dyk has been based at Griquas since last year, which saw him play Super Rugby for the Cheetahs in 2014 and 2015.
It’s been a notable rise for the former Junior Springbok front-rower, who was part of the South African squad that lifted the Under 20 World Championship trophy at Newlands in 2012.
From Durban (where he was based at the Sharks between 2011 and 2013) to Kimberley to Bloemfontein, the 23-year-old has a new home in Port Elizabeth, where he has signed a 2-year contract with the Kings.
“The move to PE is a very exciting one,” Van Dyk said. “On the field, it’s a fresh start and I feel I’m part of something big with new challenges as the Kings prepare for Super Rugby. They believe I can help them rebuild for 2016, and I hope to deliver.
“Off the field, I’ve always wanted to experience the ‘Friendly City’ for myself. I’ve played here before, but now I get to spend more time living in this environment. I love the sea and beaches, so I can’t wait to explore the city and its surroundings.”
Van Dyk added that he has settled in nicely at the Kings.
“The players have been very welcoming. There’s a positive vibe in the squad, which is very motivating,” said Van Dyk. “I know Lizo Gqoboka from previous encounters, and I’ve played with and against a few other guys at various levels, so it hasn’t been difficult slotting into the team as we prepare for the Currie Cup.
“The facilities at the Kings are very good, and the stadium and pitch are world-class. The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium is really a beautiful venue. I can’t wait to get onto the field and start this new chapter.”
JP du Plessis
Midfielder JP du Plessis has opted to join the EP Kings ahead of this year’s Currie Cup.
Du Plessis, 24, previously represented Western Province and the Melbourne Rebels, as well as having a stint in Rugby League with the Sydney Roosters.
He played for Montpellier in France in 2013 / 2014 before joining the Cheetahs last year.
He was listed in Griquas’ squad for this year’s Currie Cup qualifying tournament, but has opted to head to Port Elizabeth.
The Kings start their Currie Cup campaign at home to the Golden Lions on Saturday 8 August.
