My Oorle Ma was van Clocolan af… haar Pa (my Oupa na wie ek vernoem is) was die seun van ‘n Duitse Sendeling wat na SA toe gekom het en my Oupa was Prokurower en Burgemeester van Clocolan.
My Pa was van naby Kroonstad (so entjie vanaf Kroonstad, Viljoenskroon en Vredefort se kant toe).
So my Pa en Ma se mense was Vrystaaters, My Ma was op Oranje Meisieskool in Bloemfontein en my Pa was op Grey College.

Jou Oupa-grootjie was ‘n groot en goeie man!
Jy kom van goeie saad af!

Dankie. Op my ma se kant.

Just goes to show what a “mengelmoes” of a lineage we all have. I have Scottish, German, English and Dutch. Like many of us I am a complete mongrel.

    And proud of it.

My oupagrootjie (Pa se kant) was van Ierse afkoms, 1820 Setlaars, en het aan die Boere se kant geveg. Hy was ‘n bittereinder

‘n Hele klompie Amerikaners (veral van Ierse oorsprong) sowel as klompie Kanadose het ook hier kom veg, aan boerekant! Die boere moes hulle natuurlik leer reguit skiet… hahaha

Hulle sê mos as die Ier van die skip afklim vra hy

    “Who’s in charge here?”

En as hy hoor wie is die antwoord altyd dieselfde

    “I’m against them” 🙂

Yes, my one Oupa Grootjie on my Dad’s side (the German one) spent WW1 in a concentration camp in SA because he was a German national. My Grandfather had to leave school to find work to support the family. After he qualified as a teacher. The other one on my dad’s mom’s side fought on the side of the British and joined the British Secret service after war, was posted to Russia to help with the evacuation of the Russian Aristocracy. He was captured and imprisoned by the Bolsheviks but managed to escape. Came to South Africa in the 1920s and later became the Mayor of Cape Town.

    Col WHO Billingham

Strange old world we live in.

  • 194

    @ Stormersboy:

Have you ever heard of Fritz Duquesne?

He swore he would get Kitchener for the Camps and he did

    He was a real character

Fark, your Family is a regular United Nations!!

I’d guess there must have been some frowns from Family Members when your Mom and Dad married… stoere boertjies on the one side and “Die Vyand” on the other side… hahaha

Jeeez, in the time they got married, the internal family strife between “Natte” and “Sappe” nearly tore this country apart.

  • 196

    194 @ Victoriabok:
    Hy was ‘n besige outjie!

  • 197

    @ Victoriabok:
    No, I had not

What an interesting read. I though that Col Billingham had an interesting life.

I remember Grandpa as we used to call him, he was a real character. Like many men of his time he had a huge ego but was also a person who got things done. He had wanted a castle so bought a wine farm and built a manor house on it with a turret. My father managed the farm for him when he was newly married to my mom but it was later sold to the Pritchard family who still own it today

    http://closmalverne.co.za/

He also decided at one stage that he wanted to have Reindeer on his farm, and so used his connections to import fallow deer, permits be damned. On selling the farm they didn’t know what to do with them so they sent them off to Robin Island to join the existing population, where, having no natural predators they quickly became a big problem. They were relocated recently (some were culled).

My 2 Oupas never saw eye to eye.

As you say those were complicated times.

I think a lot of the Fallow Deer in the Cape and Easten Cape came from the Cape Town Zoo, extra deer they sold to farmers

I know the father of PK van der Byl introduced them on his farm

The Tahrs on Table Mountain escaped from the Cape Town zoo as well. Nature Conservation was crucified for extirpating them as they’re near extinct where they come from, but regardless they were still an alien species and needed to be removed

Wat verwag jy anders, hy kom darem van Noord Transvaal af? 😆

  • 201

    @ Victoriabok:
Yeah I have no problem with the culling, they are not indigenous and began to be quite a problem.

In those days conservation wasn’t really high on anyone’s list.

I remember that Grandpa had all these huge hunting trophies on his walls in Blouberg where he had a house on the hill…..

  • 202

    @ Stormersboy:

One of the guys (in the US) on my hunting list says he always looks out in the classifieds for people advertising “Free: Pet Llama or Alpaca looking for a good home”

He said it tastes like mutton 😛

    Haha I’d eat that.

  • 204

    @ Stormersboy:

    It’s free meat after all

It’s part of the camel family so I’m not sure about the taste?

These guys would eat anything, and they’re not rednecks either they’re mostly biologists

They eat bear (my SA friend in Saskatchewan shot one and said when he cooked it, it smelled like wet dog) and cougar* too

*- Some cougars will be good eating…. 😈

Well its all about the flavour at the end of the day.

Good eating is good eating, but yes as you say some stuff is a bit rank. I’d give it a try though!

  • 206

And as you say, some cougars can be quite tasty 😉

What do you call THAT type of Cougar in Afrikaans?

    ‘n Vroetelmammie?

  • 209

Make sure you pick the right cougar…….

A guy ends up with an older woman at a bar last.

She looked pretty good for a 55-year-old. In fact, she wasn’t too bad at all, and he found himself thinking she probably had a really hot daughter.

They drank a couple of beers, and she asked if I’d ever had a “Sportsman’s Double”?

    “What’s that?” the guy asked.

“It’s a mother and daughter threesome.” she said.

As the guy’s mind began to embrace the idea, and he wondered what her daughter might look like, he said, “No, I haven’t.”

They drank a bit more, then she said with a wink, “tonight’s your lucky night.”

They hopped into a taxi and went back to her place.

When they arrived back at her place and they walked into the front door, she turned on the hall light and shouted upstairs.
    “Mom… you still awake?”
