There appears to be an outside chance that Springbok Sevens flyer Seabelo Senatla may feature for the DHL Stormers in the closing stages of Vodacom Super Rugby.
The Blitzbokke finish off their 2014 / 2015 campaign in London later this week and Stormers coach Allister Coetzee says that he will investigate the option of having the speedy winger available for the last games of the round robin phase.
Senatla will have to play a couple of games to be eligible for the Finals Series that starts late in June, with the Stormers in a 3-way fight at the moment with the Vodacom Bulls and Emirates Lions to get that far.
The product of Welkom was a revelation on the wing for Western Province in last year’s ABSA Currie Cup and with the Stormers struggling to score tries this season – they have just one 4-try bonus point from their 12 matches so far – it would make sense for Coetzee to look at Senatla.
However, as Coetzee acknowledges, it would take time for Senatla to adjust back to the 15-man code, and there is also the question on the condition he may be in, meaning his readiness to play over 80 minutes. Apart from that, Senatla has a dual contract with WP and SA Rugby, and his availability would depend on when he is released by the national body.
“He still belongs to SA Rugby at the moment,” said Coetzee.
“He becomes available for us in the Currie Cup. I don’t know at this stage what physical state he is in. But who knows, with a couple of games left, I need to explore avenues and make sure we have enough back-up and make sure we are covered in all positions. He will be one guy that we will investigate.”
So while Coetzee hasn’t made a commitment or shown signs of wanting to rush Senatla into the blue jersey, it is something he is considering. Senatla made his debut for the Stormers as a replacement towards the end of the 2014 Super Rugby season.

If I were in AC’s position I would pull out all the stops to get Senatle in a Stormers jersey. Even on one leg he is streets ahead of Dillon Leyts, there should be no debate about it.

Problem is, there is still 1 weekend of Sevens left (this weekend), then even if Senatla immediately joins the Stormers, logic dictates he would have to be re-induced into the 15-man code for a couple of weeks, before playing and he would have to play at least 2 open Round games for the Stormers to qualify to play in any play-off, semi-final or final games in Super Rugby in 2015.
So, it will be an extremely tight sqeeze getting him to play in time.
