The Melbourne Rebels are hopeful that Wallaby lock Luke Jones and powerhouse wing Telusa Veainu will be in contention for selection this week against the Chiefs.
Jones missed the narrow defeat against the Waratahs on Saturday due to a delayed concussion.
While the Club expects Jones to be available, they will prioritise his wellbeing alongside teammate Telusa Veainu, who sustained a head knock in a Man Of The Match performance for Melbourne Unicorns in Round 5 of the Dewar Shield.
“We are confident that Luke and Telusa will be available for selection this week, but as each concussion presents differently, we will follow our concussion protocols before making that final decision,” Rebels’ head of athletic performance Bryce Cavanagh said.
Australian Under 20’s fullback Jonah Placid, who made his Rebels debut last month, has suffered a setback in training and will miss 4 to 5 weeks with a groin strain, ruling him out of the 2015 Oceania Junior Championship to kick off on the Gold Coast this Friday.
“Jonah will stay here in Melbourne for the next 3 weeks, where he is working closely with our rehabilitation coordinator Alex Rigby, before joining up with the Australia Under 20’s side mid-May ahead of June’s Junior World Rugby Championships in Italy,” Cavanagh said.
“We believe working with Alex, who has formulated Jonah’s rehab program with exceptional detail, is the best thing for him in prior to joining the national squad.”
Prop Laurie Weeks is edging closer to a return, with the trip to Brisbane to face the Reds on 15 May being his target.
