    @ MacroBull:
“Jake and and pdv also had a couple of gimme games at the world cup.”

Difference is that HM get 2 “gimme games” every year against a team that is ranked outside of the top 10 in the world. Yet, he can’t even boast a 100% win record against them.

You can’t argue against the facts, boet. Wink

From this squad you can almost big your 2019 world cup squad as well!”

Do you feel alright? Is jou voorkop nie ‘n bietjie warm nie?

Why not? By 2019 over 80% of this squad will be in their prime

He hasnt lost to then either

“The game of rugby is set for a significant boost on the American continents with confirmation that a new Six Nations tournament is on the cards.

The possibility of this new tournament drew closer this week after talks between the United States, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Uruguay.

Executive members of the top six ranked rugby nations spanning North and South America met in Miami, Florida this past week.

They discussed the creation of a new international championship set to begin in 2016.”

Does this mean that we will revert back to the 3 Nations or will Argentina take part in two international competitions?

  • 305

    @ Nama:
Three if you include super rugby as well

  • 306

    @ MacroBull:
    That’s just weak.

We should not even contemplate a possible lost when we play against a team ranked outside the top 10.

  • 307

    lost = loss

  • 308

    @ MacroBull:
There’s that as well. I see that some of their international players, who currently plays in Europe, have already committed to the team that is going to play in SR.

    @ Nama:
Well when last did we lose t9 scotland? Even worse than losing to arg ino… No offense bullscot

No ways, Arg will forfeit participation in SR & TRC for the sake of a (2nd/3rd tier Rugby Championship of the Americas).
The proposed Americas Championship will probably be staged more or less contemporaneously with our Currie Cup comp./EOYT …

    @ Nama:
Anyway there is no excuses drawing with Arg. I was as disappointed as anyone.

The last few coaches we had had 1 goal and thats the next world cup. But now we are getting a fusion of experience and young.

While i share pessimism about 2015, i feel with the young players in the squad with those on the fringes are going to build a legacy post 2015.

  • 312

At the rwc nz are playing with likely the best squad the game has seen with aaron smith leading from the front as probably the greatest 9’s i have ever seen IMO so it is simply theirs to lose… Not that we should throw in the towel.

  • 313

    @ MacroBull:
    Precisely.

We should always beat teams like Scotland, Argentina, Italy, Samoa and the likes and not feel satisfied that we’ve never “lost” against them.

  • 314

Argentina currently ranked #8 in the world, just behind 1st tier rugby union nations, France & Australia, & ahead of Samoa, Scotland, Japan, Fiji & Tonga. And that is despite them often not playing their 1st choice (full strength) team in certain Tests.

One underestimates Argentine rugby at your own peril.

    Yes didnt they BEAT australia?

Aaron still does not have a patch on Joost at his best. Can’t believe that you think he is better than Joost.

Joost had major weaknesses in his game, we have had better scrum-halves than him in SA, but with all of these types of discussions, it comes down to opinions as there is no objective measurement.

I concur, Whitely and Rhodes too, we know they might be the best or among the bests in their positions but nevertheless out of contention with HM
    why bother?

A decent pay may heal the hurt egos
    😆

  • 320

    @ Nama:
I got to see joost nearing the end of his career so i cant measure his kicking game with others though he had no competition on attack and defense.

Th3 modern game has turned into a game of chess, while fdp is my fav player overall, i believe the value smith ads to the all blacks is immeasurable, if he got i jured during and before the wc, nz wouldnt be clear favorites anymore… Again thats my opinion.

  • 321

    @ Hondo:
True…seems like we are now at that stage where some SA players “ply their trade abroad” and come back to SA for the pension

Yes, he did have his weaknesses. Couldn’t really pass to his right, didn’t have a right foot to speak of but boy, when he was on song, there was none better.

    322 @ nortie:
    Overjoy Overjoy Overjoy

    @ MacroBull:
No problem. Just thought that you may have seen Joost during his prime… ’93-’97… he was brilliant.

  • 326

    @ Hondo:

When you make a post, why do I always end up scratching my head? 🙄

    @ Nama:

I was privileged to have seen the great Gareth Edwards play. That guy is the benchmark to rank any scrumhalf against. Present, future or past. Just my opinion, of course.

  • 327

    @ Nama:
    Jy vergeet van 98 😉

  • 328

    @ IAAS:
Yes, Gareth Edwards’ name always comes up whenever scrumhalves are being discussed.

Joost is right up there. This is what John Robbie, an ex international SH himself once wrote about Joost: ” Joost van der Westhuizen is not only one of the greatest players in the country, he is one of the greatest of all time. Any era, any position.”

Personally, I can’t think of a more influential SA rugby player since our return to international rugby.

Joost will definitely go down as one of the greatest to have played the game. When he got his hands on the ball, you always expected something electric to happen. He will go down as one of the legends of the game.

  • 330

@ Nama: Nama, I concur. We have produced many world class rugby players over the years. Some, however, stand tall amongst the poppies. Joost was one of those. IMVHO he was probably the most exciting player of all those greats to watch. When he was in ‘that’ mood you were forced to extract your bum from your seat, jump up and down a bit and generally behave like an idiot, because you had just lost control of your senses with excitement. Especially down the right side touch line. 🙂
