I will answer your questions.. well the answers I do have…

    1. The Players get paid, albeit indirectly via Housing, Studies Paid for (bursaries) and expenses… and in addition a lot of the Players are contracted to a Home Union such as the Blue Bulls as well. I guess one could say it is a hybrid between Pro and Semi-amateur Rugby. All the Varsity Cup sides are sponsored by FNB & Steinhoff International… some considerable moneys floating around there.

    2. The rules have changed considerably in that you HAVE TO BE a bona fide student for an advanced course, not just a certificate course… it has to be at least a 3 year Diploma or Degree course or a post-graduate course like a Masters ect. But more than that, the students HAVE TO pass a certain number of their courses, failing which they no longer qualify.

    3. The Spoils of victory, as far as I am aware is limited to pride & prestige… I could be wrong.

    4. Sportsbetting.. well I do not know, because I do not gamble… My late dad used to say (and it’s something I ascribe to as well): “Gambling is a game for Kings & Cnuts… and I am neither!”

I have to agree wholeheartedly with Scrumdown about yesterday’s Match Officiating, specially in the 1st game… it was scandalous! Specially old Shaun Veldsman, the blind TMO, horrible and disgusting. Go see my direct comments during the game, about that… and by the way I do not support either of the 2 teams who played (Maties vs UJ). My clear disgust was very evident and I think Maties could have won anyway without intervention by the TMO!
