Tuks back leading the Varsity Cup Log again, by Points difference, over Shaimlas

  • 62

WHITE CARD by Pukke, they claim a knock by Ikeys

  • 63

Impossible to see a knock there, with so many bodies…

  • 64

Different ruck… and THERE is the knock

  • 65

Johan Greeff rules no knock… gmpfff

  • 66

Pukke penalty, holding and sealing off… they get relief.

They need to get far up field though, trailing by 11.

    WHITE CARD now by UCT

  • 67

Overruled… Pukke No 9 was NOT offside

  • 68

    Helter-skelter… rip-roaring shit on now….

  • 69

Pukke penalty, against No 6 Ikeys, in on the side… and everything else he could have done wrong…

  • 70

    Pukke penalty again… plus 10m more….

They opt to scrum on the Ikeys 5m line

  • 71

Another Pukke penalty, they will scrum again

  • 72

Ikeys loosehead in on a serious angle from the hit… reset scrum

  • 73

Good Ikeys defence.. knocked by Pukke’s Redelinhuys

  • 74

Early shove by Pukke… Ikeys Free Kick

8 Minutes to go in the game

  • 75

Eish, not straight into the Pukke Lineout

  • 76

Ikeys penalty on halfway… and now THEY are deep in the Pukke half… the clock is ticking mercylessly against Pukke.

Playing the man in the air at the lineout, UCT penalty… all going pear quickly for Pukke

  • 77

    UCT try?

    TMO

    Alexander…

  • 78

Ball not in 5m at the lineout?

  • 79

Yip, the ball did not travel 5m into the lineout.

The BALL has to travel 5m, not the player who needs to be 5m away… that ball did not reach 5m

  • 80

Side entry by Pukke… penalty again.

Yellow it is to the Pukke replacement hooker

  • 81

    Jason Klaasen, try again…

UCT will now win this comfortably

  • 82

  • 83

Pukke penalty… all for nothing though, even if they score…

although, they could get a Log point for 4 tries if they score

  • 84

    Final Score: FNB UCT 40 / 21 FNB NWU-Pukke

Has the unimaginable happened in Rugby?

I couldn’t help thinking as I watched these 2 games, that it seemed as if there appeared to be moves afoot to obtain conspired results. More so in the early game.

For example, when UJ used their “white card” and asked for foul play to be investigated at the ruck under their own poles, the Maties player CLEARLY went into the ruck without the use of any arms.

Bakkies Botha was given a ban for this same offence against the B&I Lions.

One of the on-field ref’s was less than 2 metres away from the incident, and was almost sitting on his haunches in an attempt to get a clearer view, and yet he failed to see it.

The TMO also claimed that he was unable to clearly see any foul play.

Maybe he didn’t see the same pictures that the rest of the world saw?

The same TMO awarded a try to Maties when it was clear that the player rolled the ball onto the line after having placed it short.

One has to ask whether it is purely inept officiating, or is there something deeper at play?

If it is just a “bad day at the office”, when are the refereeing authorities going to take decisive steps to fix the shortcomings?

Or must we just face the facts that except for the top 1% of the world’s ref’s the rest are just crap?

I for one was bitterly disappointed in the standard of officiating.

IMHO it’s better to ditch the TMO than have one who continually gets it wrong. Something that has become far too frequent in recent years.

    Congratulatiuons to the winning teams.

All 4 teams on display played with 100% effort, and for that I applaud you all.

To the officials on duty, sorry, you just weren’t up to scratch.

    85 @ Scrumdown:

    Thx for an interesting post.

    Please excuse my ignorance:
I very seldom watch Varsity Cup & I also didn’t do so yesterday.
In fact, I don’t know much about Varsity Cup.
Your post is very disconcerting; errors of match day officials can only be tolerated as average garden variety ‘human errors’ up to a point after which the inference must surely be one of corrupt/crooked officialdom, whether it be mere misplaced favouritism for one team, or actual match fixing.

    But, then –

    1. Is Varsity Cup an amateur, semi-professional or professional competition? Do players get paid, by who & on what basis?
    2. Is the competition restricted to registered students? (I remember a few years ago a stink about Tukkies seemingly not properly applying a registered students rule.) And is the registered student rule just a sham, or not?
    3. What are the spoils of victory? Are the teams playing for pride, prestige & bragging rights only? Or are club/individual sponsorship or student scholarships available to the more successful teams/players? Is there some prize money or some other prize/prizes/reward (that have a monetary value) at stake for the Varsity/College Clubs and/or their players? Are all or part of the income received from transmission rights distributed to the participating clubs? If so on what basis? Is it done evenly, or do some clubs receive more than others, perhaps depending on their success in the competition?
    4. Do we have sports betting on matches in this competition?

I’m just wondering what could conceivably motivate Clubs and/or Officials to act corruptly in this particular competition, one specifically created for the rugby clubs of our most esteemed tertiary education institutions, institutions entrusted with shaping our future leaders?
It would be sickening if sporting competition has been corrupted even at this level.
