The injury list for the DHL Stormers is growing following the addition of 3 more players after the hard won victory over the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday.
Locks Jurie Van Vuuren, Ruan Botha and Flank Michael Rhodes all picked up injuries and will be assessed in the coming days.
Van Vuuren dislocated his shoulder which will sideline him for a minimum of 3 weeks, Michael Rhodes picked up a knee injury and will be sent for scans this week to determine the extent of the injury, and lock Ruan Botha sustained a concussion and will be monitored this week. His availability for this Saturday’s match against the Sharks will depend on his progress.
On a positive note however, it is likely that locks Eben Etsebeth and Jean Kleyn and flank Schalk Burger will be available for selection this weekend, with a possibility that wing Kobus van Wyk may have recovered sufficiently from his calf injury to come into the frame for Newlands.
The team was given this Monday off to recover after a grueling match which saw The DHL Stormers having to defend deep into extra time to prevent the Lions from snatching a last gasp win.
Allister Coetzee told www.iamastormer.com “As the tournament progresses, Mondays become your resting / recovery days and you’re able to do some technical work. Today is not a bad thing at all, so we’re not too upset (at) not having trained (today)… Our focus is keep building capacity, for instance a guy like Bongi Mbonambi did well when he started in Scarra Ntubeni’s place against the Lions. You don’t want to start well and then slip away at the end due to your squad capacity not being good enough.”
When asked about the upcoming match against the Cell C Sharks Coetzee said “We’re not reading anything into the Sharks’ loss to the Bulls, they’re a powerful side and we need to make a lot of improvements if we are to keep up our good record at home. The guys showed great character last week, I was very pleased with the players’ effort – despite the mistakes they made. The good thing, however, is that these mistakes can be fixed.”
Paul Botha is a real concern, I am not too worried about Jurie Van Vuuren as he was at best a 3rd choice.
Rhodes may need a rest in any event, he’s played his heart out and we have Burger at 7, with Kolisi to come in as cover.
I’m hopeful that Etsebeth and Kleyn hit their stride quickly if selected. Van Wyk would be a welcome return, provided that he is properly fit.

The Stormers have also contracted 2 Irish club players, apparently they are perfect for the team and for Cape Town.
Not sure if you have heard of them, Patrick Fitzgerald and Gerald Fitzpatrick

Being a shepherd in Kiwi (or Wales) is a dream job
It’s got the same status as being a pool man at the Playboy mansion
Only with more perks, albeit with hairy legs
