If the Lions took the draw against the Stormers they would have been 10th and the Sharks 11th

Back to the rugby, one of the things that concerns me is the lack of form of the Boks in the Sharks’ line-up.

Yes it’s early, but the form of players like Alberts, Steyn, Bismark are of real concern from a Springbok perspective.

Players like DeAllende, Carr, Joe Pieterson, Jesse Kriel and a bunch of Lions players is heartening though.

I’m sure even HG will concede that this year won’t be their year, even after they predicted it last year.

It’s the usual wailing and grinding of teeth at emo-world.

They vacilate between blaming the ref and anyone else that they can think of.

I think one of them may have blamed Van Riebeeck,

    @ nortie:

In that 438 run chase Dippenaar said he should’ve be given the MOM award. Because he made nothing.

Recently we have had plenty partnerships over 200.

It’s almost as if you are expecting the worst to happen.

  • 245

    241 @ Stormersboy:
You can take Steyn’s name out of that equation…..no longer a Bok by his own choice, and not that too many people are worried or complaining about that.
Sharks were stupid to start with Alberts, or maybe desperate is a better word. Stormers did it right with Schalk, start him off the bench.
Bismarck has been off the boil since he was handed the captaincy last year, it’s obvious he has lost his enjoyment for the game, maybe because he has been saddled with the burden of being captain?
Scarra had the better of him by miles yesterday, and Adriaan is clearly our best hooker currently.

    242 @ IAAS:
No, I’m not expecting anything different than business as usual.
Just because we have Hash and AB doesn’t mean we will win the WC. We have gone to previous tournaments with just as good a squads, and have come short when it counts.
Being positive and supporting the team is all good and well, but ignoring the shortcomings and believing blind faith will all of a sudden make us able to chase large totals against decent bowlers isn’t going to do the job.
I’m sure we will be able to beat either Aus or Sri Lanka in the QF, and who knows, maybe we can do it 3 times in a row against solid opposition to win the tournament, but, realistically, I won’t be putting any money on that happening

In that case we can hand QdK his player of the tournament trophy so long 😆

Maybe he is still busy drying his legs?
Or swinging from the garage rafters?
He must really be taking 2015 hard, his team is hondkak, his second team, the French sucks as usual and to add insult to injury, the team from that Vis Dorpie is unbeaten and the Spermwhale is leading the way.
He truly doesn’t have any credibility left does he 😆

  • 251

It’s times like this that I miss Skop. He’d be having a full go at the Sharks supporters.

He’s an idiot, but he was our idiot.

    Always good for a laugh.

He would have been jumping into the Emo’s with both feet and swinging arms, not that there are any Sharks here

    Helllooooooooo,

Partied hard yesterday and last night… my once a year letting the hair down type of thing!

Woke up this morning with a very aggro little man sporting a big hammer, banging away in my head… took 2 pain tablets to drive the little man out… and luckily it worked!

Am now busy working on my thirst, fooking hell how can partying so hard, make you so bloody thirsty the next day?

Recorded the Cheetahs / Bulls game and the Stormers / Gutted Clownfish games and will start watching them now… so glad the Bulls won so well and of course I am over the moon that a South African side won in the Stormers / Gutted Clownfish game!

Nou waar’s my koeldrank, my tong en keel is droog, kurkdroog!

  • 256

    @ grootblousmile:
Bulls and Stormers played well, Bulls dominated for much of the match and Stormers totally dominated the second half.

    @ IAAS:
    Biff’s thoughts….

Former Proteas captain Graeme Smith says South Africa’s inability to chase targets when batting second could derail their quest for a first ever World Cup title.

South Africa lost their second pool match by 29 runs against Pakistan on Saturday after their were asked to chase 232 for victory. They also lost their second pool match against India when they had to chase a score of 307, but failed to reach 200.

Smith, in his column for the ICC, said he was concerned about South Africa’s ability to chase targets.

‘South Africa’s win-loss record, when chasing 240 or more since the last World Cup, is 3-10 whilst they only have a 39 percent win percentage when chasing in one-day internationals since January 2013,’ wrote Smith.

‘On the contrary, when batting first, South Africa has a 24-8 win-loss record, which is the best among all Test playing nations during the same period.

‘If one were to examine this issue more closely it would also become apparent that in every game in which the Proteas have been knocked out of a World Cup since 1992, they batted second with the exception of the semi-final loss to Australia in 2007.’

Smith said he feared that potential opponents in the knockout stages will exploit South Africa’s nervousness to extend their record of never having made a World Cup final.

‘They have a lot more work to do in very little time.

‘Even with one pool game to go their attention would have shifted to the likely quarter-final opponents of either Sri Lanka or Australia who would definitely have noted that their chasing travails continued.’

    It’s settled, our QF is:

March 18 – SCG, Sydney – South Africa vs. Sri Lanka

    88

And since readmission our ODI record vs SL is as follows:

South Africa Won: 28 Lost: 29 Tied: 1 No Result: 1
Sri Lanka Won: 29 Lost: 28 Tied: 1 No Result: 1
Matches abandoned without toss (if any?) not shown

Most recently (6/7/2014 – 12/7/2014) South Africa won their 3 match ODI series vs. SL in Sri Lanka.
FWIW, Quentin de Kock also played in that series as opening batsman/wicketkeeper scoring 27, 4 & 128 for an average of 53 at a scoring rate of 94.6.

From the match day XIs that defeated SL in that series we now no longer have playing for us Kallis (who played as a batsman only) & the bowling allrounder, McLaren. Both McLaren, & especially Kallis, were batting failures during that series. But McLaren was our best bowler & will undoubtedly be sorely missed. In that away series in SL the Proteas utilised the following bowlers: Steyn, Philander, Morkel, McLaren, Parnell, Tahir & Duminy. Without fail the Proteas utilised 5 front line bowlers (4 seamers & 1 spinner) plus Duminy as part time spinner. Parnell replaced Philander in the final match of the series and it is fair to say that statistically he was our worst bowler.

Throughout that series the Proteas fielded only 6 specialist batsmen (of whom Kallis scored only 5 runs in 3 innings). Thus, with effectively only 5 batsmen, 8 months’ ago the Proteas beat Sri Lanka 2-1 in Sri Lanka, in conditions that really do not suit our team.

As stated we’ll meet SL in the QF in Sydney in 10 days’ time. The SCG’s drop in pitch has more in common with Sri Lankan pitch conditions than with South African pitches, and that is not in our favour. But, whatever the conditions, ODI’s between SA & SL are always keenly contested with nothing to choose between the 2 sides. We can just as easily lose as we can win, or vice versa, so I guess a fan/blogger’s mental disposition towards this game depends on whether he/she is inherently more of an optimist than a pessimist, or not. Yet in our latest ODI showdown we beat SL in Sri Lanka. The Proteas will take a lot of heart & conviction from that …

Also, in ODIs we are higher ranked than SL, & we have the 2 top ranked ODI batsmen in the world, & the 2 top ranked ODI bowlers from all bowlers currently participating in this CWC.
All things considered, I tip the Proteas to narrowly defeat Sri Lanka in the QFs, & it won’t surprise me if the bookies reach the same conclusion. And, yes, winning the toss may be all important – but we do have a 50/50 chance at that.

Support our team, folks – it is a very good team, recent disappointing CWC results notwithstanding. If Pakistan could win the 1992 CWC in Australasia from a dismal start, then the Proteas may ultimately emulate that knock-out stage performance.

    Keep believing …

    @ nortie:

    That’s kak funny.

If Heyneke is looking for a 13 – and that is a problem position – then he can’t ignore Juan de Jong for much longer.

Serfontein and De Allende are 12’s and must stay 12’s for the Boks. Right now Juan is our best bet at 13.

I’m not even thinking of JDV at 12 – I can’t see him coming back, well not at the highest level anyway.

  • 260

    256 @ nortie:
Will watch the Bulls game with particular interest to see how the Bulls scrum went and how the Bulls loosies did against the Cheetahs loosies.

When watching the Stormers / Guppies game, I specifically will look to see how bad the Clownfish centres were and how their pack suffered.

  • 261

    259 @ IAAS:
The combo of De Allende and De Jongh are going very well, best center combination in the SA sides at the moment IMO.

Agreed. 12’s pick themselves at the moment, the 13 position is open at this stage, Juan has everything to prove. Whether Meyer can see him as a test player is another story.

The Pollard / Lambie question is fast becoming moot as they are both in great form (with Dimitri and even Joe P).

Scrummies look worrying, with FDP and Ruan looking the only options for now. Not sure what Vermaak’s form looks like.

Vermeulen is putting daylight between himself and any other contender, and staking a strong claim for the Bok captaincy.

Scarra is pushing hard for a Bok squad inclusion, hope he keeps up his form.

Kitshoff making a claim too, as is Ruan Botha.

Carr looking good at 6, making a big impact, much better than the Elstadt option, who is a powerhouse but gives the opposition too much in the loose.

All in all a good story 🙂

I see the Stormers & Chiefs play this next weekend… will be a biggie!

Kriel was very good…again. Looking like the find of the season.
    Pollard was brilliant.
Re the Guppy centers….JP was invisible and Vet Seun was a prick….so same as last year. He obviously isn’t paid enough, or doesn’t have the balls, to take on someone his own size, so he tried his best to write Kolbe off.

Even Fern, who is a Shark supporter, sent me a message about Frans…..half the size, double the doos.

    That about sums it up

  • 266

Its quite scary that jdj is quite a bit ahead od thebother 13s in sa… And even he rarely gets the ball.

    Hullo seuns.
GB watching replays accompanied by a well-earned babalas. The late game will be the one which should grab his focus(assuming he’s able). In particular the fatties in the front row. Tommy the steam-engine and his bud Mat were given an embarrassing lesson in scrummaging. One has to wonder how Jan and Beast would have fared under the same circumstances. There is so much interesting material which that game throws up it would take a book to record all the permutations. At least one point occupies the mind though. What is JS doing with his beloved Saarks? Matt Stevens? Jisslaaik. What a doff investment.
