I have just heard that one of the choppers fighting the Cape Point fire has crashed, killing the pilot. Very sad. This is a big thing down here. These guys are risking life and limb to protect our spot and we’re all pretty grateful you can believe. But to lose one’s life for the cause is not what one would expect.
I’ve just completed the shorted version of the Argus and the spirit amongst riders and spectators was amazing. Folk riding in firemen’s uniforms to red armbands to special announcements etc all reflect the gratitude of the city towards these people. Highly deserved I might add.

I have a confession to make. I game my team absolutely squat chance of doing anything decent this S15. I figured I was being realistic. Which just goes to show how being ‘realistic’ works. Nortie is realistic(that glass half empty thingie). Well he wasn’t alone this time. How wrong were we?
We’re only four games in but the signs are good that the Stormpies are good for a few more wins at the very least. which is more than I was prepared to give them a few weeks back.
So, for my boys, an apology. You deserve many of those from a lot of us. Cheers.

  • 273

And GB…….you might enjoy that performance from another Capie, which you so cleverly stole from us. He’s growing into quite an asset for you purple tree loving people. That was a stellar performance indeed. Good try too.

  • 274

    @ Tassies:
You weren’t alone as you know.

I, on the other hand, predicted last year that “THIS YEAR WOULD BE OUR YEAR” as I do every year…..

Sooner or later I’m bound to be right!

    Delighted

    My cricket summary:
Yesterday wasn’t good. The Paki’s played out of their skin it must be said. Some great bowling and some even better keeping behind the stumps. That doesn’t happen every day.
That said, the Proteas do not do pressure(at World Cups). Something about a monkey.
The monkey is being self-perpetuated by an out-of-form/low-on-confidence opening bat, who is putting pressure on the rest of the batting. I’d move QdK down the order and keep him on board for at least the UAE game. All he needs is a confidence boost. He didn’t become a Shyte player all of a sardine. Off form certainly. Gary Kirsten can tell you a thing or two about form. I’d also keep Riley for another go at the UAE and if he fails bring back Vernon. He’s the ‘best/only’ all-rounder we have. And we can use the fifth bowler in the knock-outs later. If one of these guys(bowlers) gets injured I’m afraid we’re toast.

@ Stormersboy: Ja SB. Its like placing your chips on black. Every time!!!!!! Its how the casino bosses ‘earn’ themselves their Lambos.
    🙄

  • 277

Two other unsung heros (they didn’t get MOM awards yesterday) were our little wrecking-ball hooker and Vincent K. Whilst one doesn’t want to take anything away from a fine performance by young Kitshoff yesterday, it really is a team effort in the front row. His buddies were supurb too on the day. Vincent needs a contract. Yesterday would be a good time to start.

    272 @ Tassies:
Yep Tassies, I didn’t give us a chance at Loftus in the opening round….since then I have picked us for the win, wasn’t sure about yesterday, but it worked out.
Have already picked us for the win against the Chiefs as well 😆
I saw the piece about the chopper pilot, very sad news indeed

  • 279

And how good is Damian De Allende turning out to be. He was monstrous yesterday. Every bit as good as Fransie was bad. You are looking at our future No 12 guys. Big and strong and certainly not scared. I like. A lot.

  • 280

@ nortie: Neither did I Nortie. And, if I’m to be perfectly honest, I game the win to the Sarkies yesterday(before kick-off). I also predicted the Chiefs would clear the floor with the Landers. And the Lions would be crying into their Steinlagers yesterday. Instead they were lifting them. Which is good.

  • 281

@ nortie: It was one of those vintage Hueys apparently. You know; the ones used against the Viet Kong those many years ago. We have a few down here, still in regular service.

  • 282

    280 @ Tassies:
I think the majority of us got the Chiefs and Lions wrong, I know I did.
The Landers did show how to beat the Chiefs, tackle, rush defense, give them nothing…..something that we are very good at.
And at Newlands as well, I fancy our chances for this one.
Chiefs will target 1 win on tour at least, and I suspect, as things stand now, given the choice of straight off the plane against a Stormers team full of confidence, or a week in SA and then against a Shark team not looking too flash, I think they will be targeting the latter

  • 283

    281 @ Tassies:
I’ve seen them fly over Blouberg….do they still do those flips?
Would have loved to do that trippie in the Huey

Agreed. Form no 12 in SA at the moment, made Jan Serfontein look worse than he is against the Bulls at Loftus.

As for Frans, the less said the better…..

I don’t put money on them though. That would be a bit dumb……

    Sad Sad

  • 286

Well, well, well… Stormers did it again…just as I predicted they would.

Congrats STORMERRRRSSS… Guess this is another win that will be accredited to Gert Smal. Wink

Brilliant by the front row… guess nobody will talk about a “light five” again. Just a pity Ruan Botha was not available to show PSDT what lock play is all about.

I wonder if that overrated Fatboy still have any fans in SA after last night? Those guys who always claimed that he is a “MUST” for the Bok team just in case we get a 60m penalty. What are they thinking about their hero now?

  • 287

What someone said about Fatboy on another site. If he is not careful, Janneman will be viewed in the same light in the next couple of years.

“Part of the reason why F.Steyn is one dimensional in attack is due to his usual crashballing carries with no variety or skill sets, He’s not a creative playmaker of any kind either. The arguments about him being good at these traits have been put to bed.”

  • 288

Bulls had 5 Boks in their back line (Pollard, Janneman, JJE, Hougie, Basson).

Sharks had 6 Boks in their back line (Reinach, Lambie, Fatman, JPP, Mvovo, Ndungane).

Stormers only had 2 Boks in their back line (one of which is not on the radar of the Bok coach at all) when they played against both teams (JdJ, De Allende).

Surely, there’s a moerse problem with talent identification if the Stormers can dominate both these teams in back play and beat them in the end.

I think the first few weeks have shown that heart is what counts, not reputations, and the young Stormers side have that in spades.

Great to see inexperienced players like Kotze, Koch, Leyds and others completely disregard the reputations of the players they are playing against and just go for it. The results speak for themselves.

So 2 games will define the whole season?

where was the talent identification last year?

  • 291

    @ Nama:
Also the domination came in the forwards and at the breakdown, that will put any back line under pressure.

  • 292

    @ Stormersboy:
    Absolutely.

Before the Bulls game, some Bulls supporters welcomed the fact that Lleyds was going to start instead of van Wyk. They probably regret their stance after his performances on that day and since.

Yesterday it was Kotze who provided the spark that we needed with that unexpected try. Before that try, I got the feeling that the Sharkies were all over us.

What an addition Vincent Koch is to our team! Hope he’ll stay on after the loan period. To think that the Sharks went all the way to England to get a TH to help relieve Jannie’s workload while Koch was playing his rugby not too far away from them. Happy-Grin

  • 293

    @ MacroBull:
The 2 games defined the Conference at this early stage. First objective is to win the Conference and make sure that you are in the play-off. The Sharks and the Bulls were the favorites to win the Conference, remember. How do things stand now after their games against the Stormers.

    #291
True that. Keep in mind that both the Bulls and the Sharks also had more Bok players (internationals) in their packs when we played against them, if I’m not mistaken. One would also expect that you highly reputed Bok back line players would be able to win a match for you against a bunch of upstarts if your forwards are under a bit of pressure. Alas, not to be in both these instances. So, the question begs, should some of these Boks be Boks?

  • 294

    @ Nama:
I just think its a skewed assessment, “our backs did better than their backs in that game therefore our backs are the best this year”… there are 16 games per team

Same as the forwards, “our forwards dominated their forwards on saturday therefore maak al die stormers bokke”

There is no denying that the stormers were better prepared for those derbies, while their intensity lowered for the other two games.

The Bulls were blown out of the water at the breakdown, where they were completely hampered from getting quick ball, the sharks set pieces and fransie completely imploded.

It is impossible to doubt or bring into question entire bok careers based on those two games.

  • 295

    @ MacroBull:
“our backs did better than their backs in that game therefore our backs are the best this year”

Where did I say that? You love putting words in my mouth, don’t you?

Our backs outplayed them on the day despite the fact that we only had 2 Bok players in our back line (one out of favor with the idiot Bok coach), while the Bulls and the Sharks had 5 and 6 Bok back line players in their team respectively.

Read slowly and try to comprehend. Wink

  • 296

    @ Nama:
and what are you implying by saying that? Wink

‘So, the question begs, should some of these Boks be Boks?’

  • 297

    interesting debate going on here.
Love these tussles for the beloved game’s intel supremacy.

  • 298

Before I sign off and hit the pit, you’ll have to put up with my penny’s worth.
To my mind, rugby is; first up, a team sport. Therefore, the sum of the parts will always trump comparative individual skill and/or reputation. That’s what I propose we witnessed on saturday evening. The team dynamic of the Stormers was way superior to that of the Sharks, most especially evident in the second half. Sure, one could point to the front row dominance of the Stormers having a domino effect on the rest of the team but I’d prefer to recall the team as a whole outperforming the Sharks on the day. Nothing to do with how many Boks were in either side and questions asked of their skill-set. One team outplayed another. Simple as that.

Hi Nama name these 5 Bulls Boks backs from the game against you guys and how many are ‘out of favor’ with Mr Meyer, ie. were not picked for their last tour, which was up north at end of last year. Pondering

    and on that note……….
if we don’t see you through the week we’ll see you through the window. Or something like that. 😀
