Race has become another sore point for the South African Rugby Union (SARU) when transformation in rugby was discussed in Parliament on Tuesday, according to reports.
Some MPs complained about the “white faces” in SARU’s delegation that presented to the portfolio committee on sport and recreation.
EFF MP Pebane Moteka asked: “If you do not even your leadership can transform, how are you transforming the sport?”
Solly Malatsi from the DA then tweeted that Saru’s presentation reminded him of “the unbearable whiteness of the state of South African rugby “.
SARU president Oregan Hoskins, who led the delegation, asked MPs to confirm that he was not white.
“Honourable members, look at us and say we are all white men.
“As someone who grew up under apartheid, I know it is politically correct to refer to myself as black. Sometimes I just do not understand,” he said and shook his head.
He said if they were to play political games about who is black and who is not, it leaves them in a very different minefield.
“But I forgive people who think I’m white.”
SARU’s delegation was made up of 4 black and 4 white members.
“In SARU we try to do the right thing.
“I have to look at a white player and say we have to replace you with a black player because of transformation. It’s part of the job, but we will try to maintain a balance between competitiveness and transformation.”
Hoskins added that transformation would take time.
He said they did not want to put a black person on the team because of the colour of his skin.
“We want to develop black players in order to compete on the same level as white players.”
ANC MP and committee chair, Beauty Dlulane, said more needed to be done for transformation in rugby, especially in rural areas.

Looking quite good for Aus at moment with India at 94/3 and having to bat at 7.6 runs an over from here.
@ robzim:
full advantage to Aus now
India 110 / 4 after 24 Overs.
At the moment Australia looks all over India and have a definate big advantage over India!
Dhoni to play another knock like in the 2011 final?
64 @ MacroBull:
Usually one can double the total at 30 overs, to see where a Team is likely to end after their 50 overs, however with scores above 320 I would suggest that is more like at doubling the score at 28 overs.
In that case, India seems to be way behind the Q-ball at the moment, because they should have been at 165 by 28 overs…
Interesting game though…
Dhoni will have to pull a serious rabbit out of the hat here…
India does not have Australia’s depth in batting.
India have great batsmen in the top 6, but they needed Kohli to bat deep into their innings.
Australia has had India’s beating all summer long.
PS:
India has been my 2nd favourite team ever since SA’s international re-entry, but ever since they have selfishly masterminded the effective takeover of the ICC, I’ve lost respect for their cricket administrators.
They’ve also did SA Cricket a dirty.
Hence they’re now my least favourite cricket team.
Go Australia!
67 @ Angostura:
Yeah, I also cannot say that either of these teams are near to my favourites.
Should be Aussie going through, in which case my weight will be behind New Zealand in the Final.
@ grootblousmile:
It will really take something spectacular for India to win this one.
69 @ MacroBull:
Yip, for sure.
India 148 / 4 after 31 overs
@ Angostura:
@ grootblousmile:
Also cant say I support either team, just a case of who will play NZ in the final who I will support.
Arghhhhhh
Loadshedding here in the Panne!
Farkit, it is frustrating!!
No Power, no work… eish
72 @ grootblousmile:
A man of your means should have organised a generator a looooong time ago.
😯
lol read this on cricinfo
“Just to point out, India need to make only 328 frankly… Since India qualified at #1, India will get through in case of a tie!!” Fair point, Abhishek. That changes the odds dramatically.
Take THAT Mr Narayanaswami Srinivasan & cronies!
Eng gone – check
India gone – check
Now just for NZ to do the job on AUS …
GO NZ!!!
Aussies in
Bulle moet teen Saders speel,
Stormers teen Landers,
Cheetahs teen Chiefs.
So ook Natal kolonie teen Force ?
Sal maar neutraal wees as die buitelandse spanne teen mekaar speel.
😀
@ Ben-die-Bul:
The mind boggles when reading this piece. Don’t really know what to say…..mixed emotions really….sad and angry…..nothing good can come of this.
Sadly nothing good will come of it.
Not that they care.
In happier news australia sets up what must be the dream final for the organizers.
