Joe Pietersen

Joe Pietersen

The Toyota Cheetahs have named former Stormers fullback Joe Pietersen at flyhalf for their Super Rugby Round 1 clash with the Sharks in Durban on Saturday.

Pietersen is an unknown entity at flyhalf having spent most of his time running from the back for the Stormers and for French club Biarritz, where he made 17 appearances.

In the front row, Springbok Coenie Oosthuizen packs down at tighthead alongside Currie Cup captain and Namibian international Torsten van Jaarsveld.

Former Sharks prop Danie Minnie solidifies the front line of the scrum.

At lock there is room for another Springbok in Lodewyk de Jager who pairs up with new captain Francois Uys.

Former Lion Willie Britz caps off a loose trio that includes Springbok Teboho Mohoje and the ever improving Jean Cook.

In the backs Welsh-bound scrumhalf Sarel Pretorius teams up with the exciting Pietersen while the centres are Francois Venter and another former Stormers man in Michael van der Spuy.

At the back there is plenty of pace to burn with Raymond Rhule and Clayton Blommetjies on the wings and the exciting Springbok fullback, Willie le Roux.

There is not too much firepower on the Cheetahs bench, except perhaps for Johannes Prinsloo in the forwards and Bok speedster Cornal Hendricks.

Toyota Cheetahs: 15 Willie le Roux, 14 Clayton Blommetjies, 13 Francois Venter, 12 Michael van der Spuy, 11 Raymond Rhule, 10 Joe Pietersen, 9 Sarel Pretorius, 8 Willie Britz, 7 Teboho Mohoje, 6 Jean Cook, 5 Francois Uys (Captain), 4 Lodewyk de Jager, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Torsten van Jaarsveld, 1 Danie Minnie
Replacements: 16 Stephan Coetzee, 17 BG Uys, 18 Nicolaas van Dyk, 19 Carl Wegner, 20 Johannes Prinsloo, 21 Tian Meyer, 22 Willie du Plessis, 23 Cornal Hendricks.

3 More Super Rugby sides have been named… Bulls, Crusaders, Hurricanes.

I will put up articles for it just now!

Freegin scary Hurricanes side to face the Lions in Joburg!
Bulls: Victor is captain, Spies off the bench, Arno Botha at No 8, Hougie on left wing, Piet van Zyl the starting scrummie…
For the Crusaders, Richie McCaw & Dan Carter are both starters.

    2 @ grootblousmile:
Yes just seen the Bulls squad, noted the move to have Francois Hougaard starting on the left wing where he shifted to during the game against Saracens, all three scrumhalfs looked good in that game so this move gets them all in the game.

Not sure how match fit Matfield and Botha are compared to the others so it makes sense if they are going to play to start with them and then when/if they fade they can be replaced, rather than have them come off the bench and then possibly fade and not be able to be replaced.

The Cheetahs are very, very iffy on defence again on the 2 wings… neither Clayton Blommetjies nor Raymond Rhule are exactly known for staunch defence!

Front row also looking somewhat suspect… the rest of the side could run you somewhat ragged though, if they click.

I’m afraid but I see the Cheetahs getting the wooden spoon in the SA Conference in 2015. They will score some magic tries all season, but they will also leak like a seive and concede many, many tries.
