The SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Robert Stelzner SC has accepted a guilty plea from Hayden Triggs of the Blues for contravening Law 10.4 (a) Punching or striking, after he was sent off during a Super Rugby match at the weekend.
Triggs has been suspended from all forms of the game for 1 week up to and including 28 February 2015.
The incident occurred in the 24th minute of the match between the Stormers and Blues played at DHL Newlands in Cape Town on 21 February 2015.
SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Robert Stelzner SC assessed the case.
In his finding, Stelzner ruled the following:
“As the Duty Judicial Officer, I considered all of the evidence before me including video footage leading up to the incident and issuing of the Red Card, match official reports for the incident and the submissions of Mr Aaron Lloyd which he made on behalf of the player.
“I found the incident to have a low-range entry point which stipulates a 2-week suspension. This was then reduced by 1 week due to Triggs’ prompt admission of guilt, remorse for his actions and excellent disciplinary record in over 10 years of playing professional rugby.
“The applicable entry point for determining the seriousness of the offence was further informed by the existence of provocation and the fact that the player acted in retaliation.
“The adverse effect of the player’s actions on his own team’s prospects of winning by his being ordered off at a relatively early part of the match, after his team had been awarded a penalty which could potentially have put the Blues in the lead, further played a role in recommending the sanction.
“After taking all these factors into consideration, I found that a suspension of 1 week was warranted for the incident which was accepted by the player.
“The player is suspended for 1 week up to and including 28 February 2015.”
All SANZAR disciplinary matters are in the first instance referred to a Duty Judicial Officer hearing to provide the option of expediting the judicial process.
For a matter to be dispensed with at this hearing, the person appearing must plead guilty and accept the penalty offered by the DJO.
Duty Judicial Officer: Robert Stelzner SC
Player: Hayden Triggs
Team: Blues
Position: Lock
Date of Incident: 21 February 2015
Nature of Offence: 10.4 (a) Punching or striking, A player must not strike an opponent with the fist or arm, including the elbow, shoulder, head or knee.
Elapsed time in match when offence occurred: 24th minute
“The applicable entry point for determining the seriousness of the offence was further informed by the existence of provocation and the fact that the player acted in retaliation……”.
Told you so.
Duane was the R soul in this affair.
So, one week for punching a Weepee…………………….sounds about right.
Depends Cane. If he was retaliating to a punch, and it can be proved, then both should cop a ban.
The nature of the initial offense is not specified.
For all we know he could be retaliating to Duanne farting in the lineout or something else.
Either way, no matter to us, we won’t be seeing him again this season, he’s now the other teams’ problem.

You are having a laugh if I didn’t know that you were just fishing and don’t really believe this I would have said something harsh about you condoning punching in our sport
“But ref, I didn’t punch him, mate, I retaliated first!”
@ Stormersboy:
When the “punches” where first reported to the Referee.
Andre Joubert (I think) asked the TMO to show the “Punches” and the lead up to those punches.
The SA TMO showed only the Triggs punches on the Big Screen. Indicating that no other video footage was available, or the fact that he was inept.
Given the decision laid down by The SANZAR Duty Judicial Officer Robert Stelzner SC, I’m going with the “SA TMO was inept”.
As for farting in the lineout……………………………………….Is nothing sacred anymore.
😉
@ Bullscot:
Scotty,
I never, never, never, ………………….ever………….. condone unsportsmanlike behaviour.
.
I am borderline sometimes in the heat of the moment . We are all human after all.
.
But let us all remember this is a game. (or it used to be once upon a time).
5 @ cane:
I wouldn’t like to be downwind either when Thor opens his lunchbox either, would you, mate?
@ BrumbiesBoy:
Oh Hayden punched Duane alright. (twice).
That is without question.
What the real question here is ?………………………………”What filth did Duane perpetrate to instigate such a response from a human being of Hayden’s standing in the Rugby Community”.

I dunno, I have been party to some stuff in the middle of the scrum that I would never admit to publicly…..
How’s the axe playing coming?
@ BrumbiesBoy:
In the walk up to the lineout, there is plenty of time to let go any gastric build up.
There is never an excuse for bad manners.

Reminds me of “If Kevvie said he didn’t do it……”
@ Stormersboy:
If St Kevvie said he didn’t do it.
That is good enough for me.
.
And if that is good enough for The Pope.
And that is good enough for the Appeal Tribunial.
Then that should be good enough for Stormboy……………………………………………….by my reckoning.
🙄
Just about every act of foul play on a rugby field is the result of some sort of provocation.
Typical kiwi preciousness trying to hide behind mumsies petticoats bleating he started it.
@ cane:
Hi cane do you know why your former coach Mark Hammett has left Cardiff Blues just 6 months into a 3 year contract? He has mentioned family issues, must be quite serious to make him take this action, hope it all works out ok for them. Do you think he will be available in any capacity for any of your Super rugby sides this season?
