Super RugbyIt is Round 1 of Super Rugby 2014 this weekend, at last the season gets underway for us poor, suffering rugby degenerates in the Southern Hemisphere.

There are 3 games on Friday 13 February, 3 games on Saturday 14 February and 1 game on Sunday 15 February.

The Highlanders from New Zealand have an immediate BYE weekend.

Unlike in 2013 and 2014, all countries start Super Rugby in the same weekend, so we will not have skewed Logs to deal with. A team also does not pick up ANY POINTS during a BYE weekend, which is very refreshing for a change!

Super Rugby has no June break either in an attempt to make it finish early enough to fit in an abridged Rugby Championship before Rugby World Cup 2015 kicks off on 18 September 2015.

The season starts with a weekend of some great derbies and some great cross conference battles. The first up season game will be between the Crusaders and Melbourne Rebels, followed by the big Aussie derby between the Brumbies and Reds and a humdinger of running rugby between the Emirates Lions and the star-studded Hurricans side. On Saturday it’s the Blues vs Chiefs followed by 2 South African derbies, the first in Durban between the Cell C Sharks and the Toyota Cheetahs, followed by my choice of match of the weekend, the derby clash between the Vodacom Bulls and the DHL Stormers at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria. Sunday sees a lone match between the Waratahs and Western Force to finish off Round 1.

13 Responses to Super Rugby 2015: Weekend Teams – Round 1

  • 1

Well, there are all the Weekend Teams… your hard-grafting webmaster will create one of these Articles, every week, for every Super Rugby Round… till the Final!

  • 2

The New Zealand Conference is the most difficult to read as far as where they wiil end up in the Conference and on the Combined Log.

The Crusaders have had a terrible pre-season, so will see how they go.

The Hurricanes side is the one with the star-names but they always seem to flatter to deceive… maybe a huge coaching shortcoming, because with the personnel they have they should be frontrunners all the way.

The Highlanders, well we’ll have to wait a week to see how they pan out.

The Chiefs to me are a mixed bag this year, OK so they have Sonny Bill Williams back, but he does not make the whole team.

The Blues… I think might end last in their Conference.

  • 3

OK, now I’ve made my deliberations on the chances of the sides in the 2015 season, so I guess I should make this week’s Bru picks….

  • 4

OK Bru picks made, for the Super Rugby pool, the Cricket World Cup 1st Round and for this weekend’s Six Nations… as well as for Day 1 of the Sevens in Vegas.

  • 5

Freegin hell, it’s going to be a busy Rugby weekend!!

  • 6

Tomorrow’s LIVE GAME ARTICLES for Super Rugby have already been scheduled… all ready and raring to go!

  • 7

Been watching the Cricket World Cup’s Opening Ceremony, with 1 eye… not too impressed!

  • 8

Hahaha, Brendan Venter says on Boots & All, in a Sharks clip, that he and Gary Gold has not taken much from what Jake White left, and will do their own thing…

That is just short of calling Jake White a baffoon… hehehe

SIX Nations this weekend, on Saturday is a massive buggerup… both games on Saturday on at the same time as the 2 big SA Super Rugby derbies, so guess what, we won’t have Live Game Articles for them at all on Saturday.

Luckily the 3rd SIX Nations game is on Sunday, so we’ll have a Live Game Article for that one!

Cool too catch up with friends at the Wellington Sevens.Looking forward too the Waratah v Rebels Super 15’s game. Plenty of Storms and rain about for both the World Cup Cricket and Super 15’s openers. Have a great Super 15 season everybody.

Such contempt for one of rugby’s finest institutions, I think you may find your dissatisfaction should rather be directed towards the Super rugby lot after all surely they should have looked at the 6 Nations schedule and planned the big derby games for when there are weekend breaks in the tournament. 6 Nations schedule through 2017 has already been decided now that is organization for you Tounge-Out

    @ grootblousmile:
#9 on a more serious note am willing to bet those 6 Nations games will be watched by more people both at the grounds and around the world by way more people than the 2 derby games. The big game of the 6 Nations as you say GBS is on Sunday anyway…

    12 @ Bullscot:
The thing is, Rugby-Talk.com, due to it’s nature is more Southern Hemisphere oriented… and the SA interests will definately lie with the 2 SA derbies.
