Bulls lock Grant Hattingh is reportedly heading to Japan after the completion of this year’s Super Rugby competition.
Bulls High Performance Manager, Xander Janse van Rensburg, said that Hattingh has a “Japan clause” in his contract.
Should Hattingh leave for Japan, he would miss this year’s Currie Cup competition, but return in time for Super Rugby in 2016.
This follows the news that Flip vand er Merwe and Jacques du Plessis decided to further their careers in France at the end of the season.
It is also speculated that Bulls captain for 2015, No 8 Pierre Spies, could also possibly play in Japan in 2016.

Luckily it looks like Grant Hattingh will just miss the Currie Cup and be back for Super Rugby again in 2016.
I’m not worried about the loss of Pierre Spies.. not a bit.
Problem with players like Grant Hattingh and his partner last year, Paul Willemse is that the lock stocks in SA are huge. But then you have the Springbok coach who was too scared to give some very good youngsters a a chance, and instead brought back Victor Matfield, who while still a great lock, does not stand out from the rest like he used to. The message it sends to locks like Hattingh is that they have no chance of making the Springbok team.
And maybe Ludicrous should play Spies on the wing. Unfortunately I don’t think Spies is a natural no 8 like Whitely or Vermuelen, and given his talents should maybe be tried out as a no7 flanker rather than an 8.
