Preparations are underway for Argentina’s entry to Super Rugby in 2016 with Martín Landajo and Guido Petti becoming the first players to commit to the Buenos Aires-based franchise.
The pair both currently play on home soil in Argentina’s domestic league, but will have their sights set on international provicinal competition when the new team comes into existence in a little over 12 months from now.
Both players and the UAR confirmed their signing via Twitter on Friday.
Landajo, a 26-year-old scrumhalf has 40 caps for Argentina while Petti, a 20-year-old lock has two to his name after debuting in a 20-18 victory over Italy in Genoa.
“This is a special and unique time,” Landajo said.
“While I’ve signed other deals with the Union, this one is special because we’re entering a new era for professionalism in Argentinian rugby. I’m thankful that the UAR have confidence in me.”
UAR President, Carlos Araujo added, “Last year was a big for Argentine rugby with the inclusion into Super Rugby from next year.”
“What’s more we ensured that Los Pumas will be playing in the Rugby Championship until 2020. Now starting this year, the signings of these contracts is a big step for the UAR, because we’re pressing on with our aim to have more and better rugby.”
“With the the commitment that the players are making signings these contracts, they’re showing that they believe in the project and underlining their pride they have in representing the country playing a sport they love.”
Argentina head coach Daniel Hourcade is on record as saying that only players who commit to the new Super Rugby franchise will be eligible to play for Los Pumas, echoing similar policies by the Australian and New Zealand Rugby Unions.
