Springboks Pieter-Steph du Toit and Willem Alberts are back training with the Sharks after long injury layoffs.

Lock Du Toit missed much of last season with a serious knee injury, while loose forward Alberts was laid low after a back operation last July.

The duo are back in training as the Sharks start their preparations for this year’s Super Rugby competition. Both have been training well and showed no discomfort from the injuries.

There was however less good news for lock Stephan Lewies, who will reportedly remain sidelined with injury for an extended period.

With Director of Rugby Gary Gold still tied up with commitments in Japan, former coach Brendan Venter has taken charge of training in the interim, along with the rest of the coaching team of Brad MacLeod-Henderson, Sean Everitt and Paul Anthony.

The Sharks will start their pre-season with a training game against a team made up of various Durban clubs in two weeks, before heading overseas to face the French and European champions, Toulon on 5 February.

They start their Super Rugby campaign at home against the Cheetahs on 14 February.

    101 @ grootblousmile:

    😆 okay mr advocate…

if i had to mark your comments in a language exam, you’d do very poorly on ‘reading and comprehension’… but i don’t… so i won’t…

you speak about the ‘horses mouth’… my comments are based on what came from the players themselves… the actual horses mouths… as i stated… not based on someone else’s interpretation of what the players have said…that would be the chester missing of horses mouths…
how as an advocate you believe a judge would accept the opinion of a journo, scribe etc as ‘proof’ over recorded interviews of the players themselves is interesting…

you’re banging on about “i do not back it up with examples by people who say so…”
if you feel i must only express opinions that have been expressed by (questionable) ‘authorities’ then perhaps I am in the wrong place… I am not a yes-man who regurgitates what others say and believe… i think for myself… whether you agree or disagree with my thoughts or not… and when you believe they are wrong it is your right to say so… but if you only want comments and thoughts that have been postulated or ‘proved’ by our learned friends in the press… who are just people like your ‘bloggers’ btw… then i simply have nothing to offer… i am not a cut and paste artist…

i have given you examples of Faf’s ego in action… but you have steadfastly ignored them… so no point in rehashing them… but maybe if you watched more protea games and player interviews you would have seen and heard the same things…

also very interesting that you say your comment was not an attack… when you won’t comment on or debate the actual comments I have made… but much to say about the fact that i have made them… and question my motives… that’s playing the man and not the ball… and despite your denial it does feel more and more like a personal attack…

but perhaps most revealing is that you have a go at me for making unsubstantiated comments… even though I have substantiated my comments… even if not to your satisfaction… but then you go ahead and cast aspersions about my motives and character… with no such proof or substantiation that you demand from me from any journos or people who know me etc… and in spite of the fact that you have known me for years via Keo and RT… but you can still not get past ‘feeling’ or describing me with very very tainted bias…?

so it’s a case of do as GB says… not as GB does…?

    well alright then… now I understand…! 😆

    110 @ Charo:

    hey charo… cheers… perceptive comment bud…

  • 124

    116 @ charlesm:

    hi charles… thanks for that… most appreciated…

now if only GB would debate the points i have made and come up with his own reasons why my points were wrong then we’d have an actual debate…! 😉

    anyway… i’m up the Mountain today…

cheers all… may you all have a a great sunday…!

    I rate Faf.

That innings in Adelaide is one of the best I’ve ever seen.

Talent doesn’t only encapsulate the athleticism of a sportsperson but also involves the mental aspects of their ability.

Some athletes have the natural talent to work hard at their game and can put in the hard hours on the training field.

Many here say that Faf doesn’t’ have the talent of a Hershelle, Cullinan, AB or Hash but his natural talent is the ability to VALUE his wicket and work hard at is game.

  • 126

    Geez. Such “debate”.

    Lies, damn lies and statistics.

Statistically just under half of humanity are below AVERAGE intelligence.

Statistically we all have one breast, one testicle and half a penis! (I think SuperBul said it originally)

So basically (even in cricket) averages matter not a hoot unless the facts are really dug into.

A case in point is poor old Jacques Rudolph. His debut against Bangladesh produces an unbeaten double ton, and after his first 5 test series’ he had an average in the 90’s.

One would have thought that he would go on to greatness, but alas, the “law of averages” caught up to him, and he was consigned to a career of swatting county bowlers around “village green” grounds in England and Wales whilst (no doubt) putting together a handsome little nest egg with which to support his family once the eyes, knees and reactions packed in.

Point in fact is, averages mean sweet F-ALL for the “average” sportsman.

It’s single (or groups) of performances at any particular point in time against a given opposition that count. (IMO)

Faf’s Adelaide innings will ALWAYS stand out, as will some of JP Duminy’s.

Surely it’s within EVERY player’s make up to have self confidence and belief in himself, his abilities and his decision making? Otherwise, why put yourself on the pedestal to be shot down.

Personally, I don’t have a great deal of faith in Faf as either a man to turn a game around, or a leader capable of lifting a team up when they are down (as on Friday night).

Does he deserve to be in all 3 formats? Probably. Is he the best person to lead the National side in T20. IMO probably not, but the selectors have decided that he is, so then he must be.

The difference (for me) is that whatever the format, when Amla or de Villiers walk out into the middle to bat, there is never a nagging doubt that they may fail to score runs.

Now, will you all stop distracting me with your silly tet-a-tet arguments.

I’m in the middle of knitting a replica Lions shirt for the first SR game, as I can’t afford to buy one, and I keep on dropping stitches when I read the comments.

Lekker dag almal. Time to earn a few shillings.

Even though I rate Faf’s cricketing ability I did noticed something during the 4th days play at Newlands recently.

It rained throughout the day and the players were kicking a football around before play commenced at 15h00.
Whilst doing their soccer drill the ball ended up close to one for the security guards on the boundary. One of the players then made a clicking sound (the sound one makes on the back of a horse to move along) instructing the security guy to kick the ball back.

I thought this was quite disrespectful and made a point to find out who the player was… and yes it was Faf …. with a tight fitting cricket shirt.

What a load of steaming kuk.

    😆

  • 129

    @ gunther:

What size Protea cricket shirt will fit you.
    Small, medium or large?

    😆

  • 130

    128 @ gunther:
Push your lawnmower over it, and you are instantly splattered on the lower leg with speckles of stinking shyte.

Wait until it dries out and THEN push your lawnmower over it, and it disappears (literally) in a puff of dust that you instantly inhale.

    Ain’t life a blast

  • 131

    @ Jeraldjay:

I don’t know I’ll have to chat to faf about the fits.

    Apparently he designs them.

I’ll probably go the Lukas Whatsembi route and order one two sizes too small for me to accentuate my guns.

    😆

  • 132

    @ Scrumdown:

    Mow around it surely?

  • 133

Soon Shane Warne & Faf du Plessis will have the baggie greens & proteas doing battle in budgie smugglers & banana hammocks 😆

Wonder when this kinda thong will catch on in women’s cricket? 🙂

  • 134

    @ Angostura:

Sounds like they’re making a bit of a thong and dance about the whole thing to be honest.

  • 135

Fark, if I was Rabada, Abbott, Wiese, Parnell or Tahir I would be poeping in my pants at the thought of bowling to Gayle at the Wanderers today, in the mood his flippin in.

  • 136

    132 @ gunther:
Don’t know. Not in my scope of work around the house!

  • 137

    135 @ Jeraldjay:
I somehow doubt that any batsmen in world cricket won’t relish the prospect of facing that “attack”.
I agree with some sentiments that Faf looks and acts like a show pony and is truly in love with himself (who can forget his “look” as manager of the Proteas v Springboks, even the commentators laughed and joked about how impressed he is with himself), but to me the cake must be taken by Parnell.
He not only does his best to look like a douche, he even backs it up with his play.

  • 138

    @ nortie:

Parnell is one of the players I just don’t trust when asked to bowl at the “death”.

He might have a good 1st or 2nd spell but as soon as he is given the responsibility to finish off the game he comes off second best 95% of the time.

At least he got rid of that ponytail.

Marchant de lange should be given more of a chance than he is presently being given. He’s played 2 ODI’s, taken 7 wickets at an average of 11.

No one has a better record, he should have been given more time to prove himself. Yes I know its 2 games, but its a very good start. Plus he is capable of bowling close to 150km/h.

We have enough bits and pieces cricketers in the squad. Unfortunately Parnell get in, as does Behardien and Pangiso on Quotas. Sucks to be McLaren, De Lange and a couple of others.

I would swop Parnell for Lobsy if it came to a 1 for 1, and even Behardien for Pietersen if that was also the case.

As for Faf, I am not a particular fan either way, but he is a good cricketer, no doubt. It’s too early to talk about whether he is world class, time will tell that.

One player that was never up for the challenge was Elviro. Never understood why he held onto his place for that long. I suppose it was to balance the quotas in the team, not an easy task for a selection panel. Cricket SA’s obsession with quotas has unfortunately kept us from getting that extra 5% that sometimes makes the difference.

  • 141

Well played Miller, bad way to lose a wicket though.

  • 142

The Windies bowlers bowling very very poorly to Faf 😎

  • 143

    Such a good shot that.

Anything below 210 from here would be a failure.

  • 144

These guys are damn fit, so many 2’s, the important thing is that they are looking good doing it.

  • 145

    Hahahaha

Oh Faf… thanks for the 101 off only 46 so far!

  • 146

24 runs in the over and Faf gets his 100, captains knock?

We will need many more runs though to feel remotely safe.

  • 147

    200 up for the Blomme!

    3.4 Overs still to go

  • 148

I ‘m not convinced at this 10 should count, because Faf has never scored a domestic Twenty20 hundred and averages 26.

  • 149

    this 100*

  • 150

    Behardien… come now
