Bandise Maku

Bandise Maku

The Vodacom Bulls will be without Springbok hooker Bandise Maku for the Vodacom Super Rugby season after he tore his pectoral muscle in Saturday’s opening friendly match against the Toyota Cheetahs in Polokwane.

Maku will have surgery on 3 February and will be ruled out of action for between four and six months, Vodacom Bulls team doctor Org Strauss confirmed on Monday.

The Polokwane clash last year saw a season-ending injury to flanker Arno Botha, but the Springbok this time came through the match with only a tight hamstring. He will be able to train on Tuesday, but will not travel to London where the Bulls take on Saracens this weekend.

Akona Ndungane is another who will miss the London trip due to a calf strain. He will be out of action for two weeks. Dean Greyling suffered an ankle sprain and will be out for two weeks at least, Strauss said.

Trevor Nyakane, who was a late withdrawal in the Polokwane clash due to a back spasm, is fit as is Handre Pollard who returned to training today.

Hanro Liebenberg (quad contusion), JJ Engelbrecht (quad / knee contusion) and Lappies Labuschagne (shoulder spasm) will all train on Tuesday.

Maku has been added to the long term injury list, where he joins Flip van der Merwe (pectoral, mid-April), Hencus van Wyk (lisfranc fracture dislocation, end of February), Pierre Schoeman (ACL rupture knee, 15 July), Adriaan Strauss (calf, 9 Feb) and Jason Jenkins (quad, 2 Feb).

Die IAB gaan my so R 5 500.00 per jaar kos… eish!

    @ Scrumdown:

I understand where both of you are coming from.

First of all both of you say that too much gym work is the problem. Yes it can. And here we think of weights. And weights alone. Too much emphasis is placed on lifting weights.

Intensity, speed, endurance, power are just as important. And that is where something like crossfit will provide the results you want. Guaranteed. Because that is what rugby demands.

Many of the New Zealanders are embracing crossfit as part of their fitness regimen. I’m hearing a few saffas doing it. To regain and maintain peak physical performance you have to do something different. Otherwise you will fall behind.

Or get injured in the process.

    42 @ IAAS:
I keep maintaining that a lot of recent rugby injuries, specifically amongst younger players, have a hell of a lot to do with the muscle attachment points which have not developed properly in relation to the size of the muscles they lead to.

Gym work tends to do that…

In years gone by, the players were in many instances either farm boys who naturally developed strong from a young age, with those attachment points getting their due development too, or they were used to hard physical work in some form…

The role that supplements play in upping weight and “Sizing up” is also often taken far too far, but I suppose the need for rugby players to be bulkier than years ago adds to the dillemma of being much more subject or prone to injury, not to mention the nature of the hits modern rugby players take and have to dish out.

There simply is not enough time to recover after games, these days.

  • 44

    @ grootblousmile:
Especially since it is a professional sport and they want as much game time as possible.

but I like IAAS’ point about crossfit, but seeing as it has exploded in the fitness world I’d be surprised if the SA franchises has not embraced it yet and if they haven’t adopted it yet.

Then again I am sure the conditioning is done by people much more qualified than we are.

  • 45

*and if they haven’t adopted it yet… they have fallen behind already.*

  • 46

My idea of “Crossfit” these days is alternating between sletsappies, jerrekie-pik-my and jeagie bombs… hehehe

Then I throw in a couple of tins of condensed milk in the week just to keep energy levels up…

    Dus my antwoord, nee dankie”
