The Vodacom Bulls will be without Springbok hooker Bandise Maku for the Vodacom Super Rugby season after he tore his pectoral muscle in Saturday’s opening friendly match against the Toyota Cheetahs in Polokwane.
Maku will have surgery on 3 February and will be ruled out of action for between four and six months, Vodacom Bulls team doctor Org Strauss confirmed on Monday.
The Polokwane clash last year saw a season-ending injury to flanker Arno Botha, but the Springbok this time came through the match with only a tight hamstring. He will be able to train on Tuesday, but will not travel to London where the Bulls take on Saracens this weekend.
Akona Ndungane is another who will miss the London trip due to a calf strain. He will be out of action for two weeks. Dean Greyling suffered an ankle sprain and will be out for two weeks at least, Strauss said.
Trevor Nyakane, who was a late withdrawal in the Polokwane clash due to a back spasm, is fit as is Handre Pollard who returned to training today.
Hanro Liebenberg (quad contusion), JJ Engelbrecht (quad / knee contusion) and Lappies Labuschagne (shoulder spasm) will all train on Tuesday.
Maku has been added to the long term injury list, where he joins Flip van der Merwe (pectoral, mid-April), Hencus van Wyk (lisfranc fracture dislocation, end of February), Pierre Schoeman (ACL rupture knee, 15 July), Adriaan Strauss (calf, 9 Feb) and Jason Jenkins (quad, 2 Feb).
Callie Visagie is useless

Bosom buddies?
What’s the problem at the Bulls, the players keep tearing their titties?

Too much Gym work, far too little time spent on Creative Game play ideas and practice

Thanks for sharing that news with us here GBS, if I got the right hotel it is a four star one quite central and about half an hour bus trip at least, if they are lucky with the traffic, to the stadium which is in the northern side of London. Hopefully they spend some time at the ground before and/or after the game so we can try catch a chat.

I’ll forward you the WEEKLY PROGRAMME, then you can see for yourself when they leave for what and where…

Sometimes you have to wonder what guys really do in the off-season. Injuries happen, yes. But players are supposed to be getting stronger in the off-season and working on their conditioning. I’ve seen t happen at the Stormers as well in previous seasons where players break down early in the tournament. I then have to question what the strength and conditioning coach is doing? Or is it, players going full tilt too early? Players and management/fitness trainers should know by now that this comp is a marathon and not a sprint.

They gym and bulk up to much
They should practice more and play touch rugby to get their skill levels and fitness up
The All Blacks looked skinny against the Boks last year but they were fitter and it counts in the last twenty minutes
This is the same injury that Maku had when at the Lions and kept him out for the season.
Can only be caused by too much gym work.
I said when it happened at the Lions that the management were a bunch of twats for letting it happen, and I say again, the Bulls management AND MAKU are all twats for letting it happen AGAIN.
How does a player who KNOWS that he has had a problem before overwork the same area again in pre-season work.
Prat of the highest order IMO.
Can anyone point me to a site where I can get all the details of the Bulls v Cheetahs match? i.e. starting lineups, minutes played who replaced who and when and maybe even comments about every players game? Of course all us Kiwis and Aussies are crying into our beers about the hooker crisis at the Bulls!!!!
15 @ ozziekiwi:
Normally the Vodacom Stats App would have given you those stats, but seeing as the game was a pre-season warm-up and not even televised, I do not think the stats will be available.
@ ozziekiwi:
Journalism here is pretty bad. It is tough to find stats or in depth analysis on official games. Best for warm up games is to look up the official twitter feed by the teams.
@ ozziekiwi:
Go to the website of the Bulls
Select the Bulls Cheetahs report
Scroll down to the report of the blogger named Dries. Unfortunately it is in Afrikaans. If someone will translate it for you, it is one of the best feedbacks from a person who really knows his rugby.
@ dWeePer:
#18 ahh wondered what the d in front of WeePer stood for now I know – hello Dries 😆
Hello GBS,
