Glasgow Warriors forward Ryan Wilson has been suspended by the Scottish Rugby Union after being fined at Glasgow Sheriff Court on Tuesday for assaulting two men, including Ally Maclay of Glasgow Hawks, in a takeaway shop in the west end of the city in October 2013.
His co-accused Warriors team-mates, Ryan Grant and Rory Hughes, were cleared.

SRU chief executive Mark Dodson said: “This has been a wholly regrettable episode. Regardless of the verdict there is absolutely no place in the game, on or off the pitch, for the sort of behaviour that has led to criminal proceedings being taken.
“Rugby has a long-standing reputation as a family sport and all players have a responsibility to uphold the game’s values.
“Those involved have learned a harsh lesson and I know that the three players, who are also our employees, are extremely chastened and remorseful about the whole episode.
“It’s completely unacceptable for any player within our employment to let themselves get into such a situation and this case should act as a powerful reminder to all players that they are role models for our sport.
“Ryan Wilson, having pleaded guilty to one amended charge, and subsequently found guilty of an additional charge will be immediately suspended. Scottish Rugby will be considering at Board level what further action is appropriate and will make an announcement in due course.
“Ryan Grant and Rory Hughes, having received not proven verdicts, will return to their club, Glasgow Warriors. Both have already been the subject of internal disciplinary action.
“Scottish Rugby acknowledges and regrets the effect this incident has had on Ally Maclay, and will be having a discussion with him to understand if there is any support he may need going forward.”
Hawks released the following statement last night.
Glasgow Hawks note the two not proven and one guilty verdict from the Sheriff and jury at Glasgow Sheriff Court today in the trial of three rugby players, Ryan Grant, Rory Hughes and Ryan Wilson.
The club sees this as a conclusion to the matter and wish to draw a line under the matter which will allow all involved to get on with their involvement in rugby.
The club will continue to focus on the sport which we are committed to promoting.
The club will continue to support Ally in any way it can.
The club hope that a lesson has been learned from these events about the standard of behaviour which should be expected from rugby players.
We also hope that the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU) take stock of the events which occurred on the night and in the weeks and months subsequent to the assault. The primary duty of the SRU is to the sport in Scotland, its ethos and values, which during this period has not been entirely clear.
There will be no further comment from Glasgow Hawks on the matter.
Disappointing this whole episode which have been following for a while but rather taking a wait and see what happens in court stance. Reading through what has emerged over time especially the last few weeks of statements and evidence in court it is not surprising that 2 got a ‘not proven’ verdict rather than guilty or not guilty as it has been quite confusing to follow at times what really happened.
Am surprised though that having been found guilty of offences that Ryan Wilson has only been fined by the courts, think he has got off lucky.
By the way Glasgow Hawks are not the equivalent of the Hawks in South Africa – they are a rugby club in Glasgow.

You see the words “Hawks”;”court” and “suspended” in the same sentence and one might be excused for thinking you are indeed referring to the SA equivalent
@ nortie:
I propose they ask Deon Meyer to send local Hawk Bennie Griessel over to Scotland to investigate whether there is a link between the Glasgow and SA Hawks. He will solve the case in no time on condition they keep him off the Whiskey 🙂
@ robzim:
ha ha Rob. Bennie will solve the case and finish off all the whisky. As long as that rude partner of his ( think its Vaugn, but can remember) and the KFC eating lady stay away. Talk about messing up international relations if they go along

You don’t have to snooze on the plane, you will have 80 minutes to snooze once the Bulls run out…..watching them is a sure fire way to cure insomnia

Remember to pack an empty whisky bottle, preferably filled with sand or concrete
You might get an opportunity to throw it a Ludekots
Regardless what happens it will be a win-win situation, if you manage to him squarely you take him out permanently
If you only manage to wing him his remaining three brain cells might line up, he’ll change the game plan, get rid of his favourites and resign, in that order
If you miss him completely you might still achieve some collateral damage and hit Spies on one of those DD pecs and take him out for a few weeks, and we might actually see a real rugby player wear the no 8, especially since the even more useless Ross has departed
