Charlie Faumuina
All Black prop Charlie Faumuina has bucked the trend and re-committed to the Blues and New Zealand Rugby to the end of 2017.
One of the most mobile props in the game, 28-year-old Faumuina has established himself as a dominant and versatile tighthead, with the ability to play both sides of the scrum.
He has re-signed to play in New Zealand in 2016 and in 2017.
New Zealand Rugby Chief Executive Steve Tew welcomed Faumuina’s recommitment as a great result for the All Blacks and Blues.
“We know that like many players, Charlie had choices available to him,” Tew said.
“We are delighted he has chosen New Zealand over other options as it helps to anchor the strength of our All Blacks front row and leadership group beyond this year’s World Cup,” he added.
“The international market for good rugby talent is very competitive, and while we can’t always compete financially on the same level as others overseas, we know that for many New Zealand players, there is still great value in the lure of the black jersey and the opportunity to be part of the All Blacks tradition.”
Blues coach John Kirwan said: “Charlie is a true Blues man who has run out 61 times for the Blues since his debut in 2009.
“We are very proud of the contribution Charlie continues to make to our team and our organisation. He provides valuable leadership to newer members of our team, and he is a great person to have around our environment.”
Faumuina said he was stoked he and his family will remain in New Zealand.
“I am excited to have extended my commitment to the All Blacks and the Blues post this year’s World Cup,” the prop said.
“I have learnt a lot from the 2014 season and feel I have more to give New Zealand over the next couple of years.
“Long term, the British and Irish Lions tour in 2017 is another key moment in New Zealand. The Lions hold a huge amount of history and to potentially be a part of an All Blacks team playing against this iconic team, is hugely motivating.”
Since his All Blacks debut against Argentina in Wellington in 2012, the 27-Test All Black, has cemented his place in both teams through impressive ball handling skills and dominance in all contact areas.
