The festive season continues with derby matches in Round 12 of the Guinness PRO12. Some of the matches are the return leg of derbies played around the Boxing Day period. The attention in Scotland will be focussed on BT Murrayfield on Friday night where Edinburgh will host their rivals from the west, Glasgow Warriors, in a PRO12 fixture that doubles up as the second leg of the 1872 Cup.
Glasgow Warriors go into the game with a 10-point advantage following their win over Edinburgh on Boxing Day and will be looking to retain what is said to be the oldest cup in club rugby, yet again. There was only 1 try scored in the first leg of the 1872 Cup last week and with blustery conditions likely for Friday night the game may be a low scoring battle of attrition that could go the way of the team that makes the least errors.
Considering the relative positions of the 2 teams on the PRO12 table and the fact that Glasgow go into the game with that 10- point cushion one should expect at the very least that they maintain their grip on the 1872 Cup.
Teams
Edinburgh have made two changes to their starting line up with Tim Visser coming in at left wing for Tom Brown who was flattened by Sean Lamont in the build up to Glasgow’s try last week, and Phil Burleigh replaces Andries Strauss who has been criticized quite a lot (perhaps a bit harshly) in the local media and by fans.
Glasgow have made various changes to their starting line up with Tommy Seymour, Finn Russell, Jonny Gray, Fraser Brown and Gordon Reid returning after resting last week, while fullback Peter Murchie starts in place of Stuart Hogg, who was an injury concern this week. Sean Maitland replaces Sean Lamont on the wing and Tyrone Holmes starts at flank in place of injured Rob Harley. The young scrumhalf Ali Price has been included on the bench and may make his second competitive appearance for the club.
Edinburgh: 15 Jack Cuthbert, 14 Dougie Fife, 13 Matt Scott, 12 Phil Burleigh, 11 Tim Visser, 10 Greig Tonks, 9 Sam Hidalgo-Clyne, 8 David Denton, 7 Roddy Grant, 6 Mike Coman (Captain), 5 Ben Toolis, 4 Anton Bresler, 3 John Andress, 2 Ross Ford, 1 Alasdair Dickinson.
Replacements: 16 Neil Cochrane, 17 Rory Sutherland, 18 Willem Nel, 19 Fraser McKenzie, 20 Hamish Watson, 21 Sean Kennedy, 22 Tom Heathcote, 23 Sam Beard.
Glasgow Warriors: 15 Peter Murchie, 14 Sean Maitland, 13 Alex Dunbar, 12 Peter Horne, 11 Tommy Seymour, 10 Finn Russell, 9 Niko Matawalu, 8 Josh Strauss, 7 Tyrone Holmes, 6 Ryan Wilson, 5 Al Kellock (Captain), 4 Jonny Gray, 3 Jon Welsh, 2 Dougie Hall, 1 Gordon Reid.
Replacements: 16 Fraser Brown, 17 Alex Allan, 18 Euan Murray, 19 Leone Nakarawa, 20 James Eddie, 21 Ali Price, 22 Richie Vernon, 23 Stuart Hogg.
Injuries
Both teams have substantial injury lists although Edinburgh’s one seems to be getting shorter while that of Glasgow Warriors is getting longer. The Glasgow team had the news comfirmed this week of a potential long term injury to stalwart Rob Harley. He damaged tissue in his left knee and left ankle in the match against Edinburgh last week.
Edinburgh: Wicus Blaauw (knee), Tom Brown (head), Allan Dell (leg), Cornell Du Preez (leg), Jamie Farndale (knee), Hugh Fraser (knee), Grant Gilchrist (arm), Brett Thompson (shoulder) and George Turner (hamstring).
Glasgow Warriors: Adam Ashe (neck), Mark Bennett (leg), Kevin Bryce (shin), Rossouw de Klerk (foot), Chris Fusaro (ankle), Rob Harley (leg), Lee Jones (ankle), Murray McConnell (leg), Henry Pyrgos (knee), Tom Ryder (neck), Duncan Weir (arm) and Jerry Yanuyanutawa (head).

Hoping for another Glasgow win, and a good game
@ Bullscot:
… and also no more injuries
Wow what a start by Edinburgh who lead at half time 20/3, two tries by Tim Visser. Missed part of it was in time to see the first try.
Latest score- Edinburgh 20/8 Glasgow – 52nd minute, was a bit of magic from Matawalu to score a try early for Glasgow, making up for his charged down kick that lead in the end to Visser’s first try. Game is far more open that I thought it would be.
Hogg on for Murchie, Hogg has big bandage on leg, concerned hope he doesn’t make it worse
Entire sub front row on now for Glasgow. Nakarawa started 2nd half in place of Kellock, hope Glasgow have not made too many subs too early
Richie Vernon on for Horne for Gla, Sutherland on for Ed in place of Dickinson
Edin 20/8 Gla – long range penalty straight but just short by Hildago-Clyne
James Eddie on for Josh Strauss who has not had his best game
Dickinson back on for Edinburgh
Eddie on the flank with Wilson shifting to number 8
Fraser McKenzie on for Anton Bresler who has had a good game
Penalty to Edin
Miss, come on Glasgow make the most of it, time is running out
Strong scrum Edinburgh earning them a penalty
Sloppy play Glasgow knock it on trying to run from well in their half lucky there was a mistake earlier by Edinburgh
Scrum penalty to Edin on Glasgow scrum, players putting their knees on the ground
Matawalu intercepts but knocks it on what a pity could have been a long distance try
15 820 crowd, apparently biggest crowd to watch a Glasgow Edinburgh game, only 4 min left
Edinburgh defence strong, keeping Glasgow out, just a min left, Edin have possession and earn a penalty deep in their half
Ross Ford man of match
Edin turn it over and kick out and win
Edinburgh 20/8 Glasgow, well done Edinburgh, not even a losing bonus point for Glasgow very disappointing
Alan Solomons walks off with the 1872 Cup
“Glasgow go into the game with that 10- point cushion one should expect at the very least that they maintain their grip on the 1872 Cup.” – time for me to eat humble pie, even if wasn’t too confident to predict a win for Glasgow still thought we would have enough of a lead from game one to retain the Cup. But the bigger picture is the dropped league points
Hi Bully. As I said on FB last night, this match was the Alan Solomons show. He simply out thought Glasgow, and new exactly what and when Glasgow were going to do anything and countered every move they made.
A simple example, Edinburgh knew the Glasgow linnet calls, and read almost every one perfectly, either disrupting the linnet or stealing the ball.. They rendered Strauss and co. completely ineffectual, so much so, that if I didn’t know better, would have said that he was in the side as a overweight battering ram.
Edinburgh new all the Glasgow line moves, and Vissers intercept was testimony to that, and they generally nullified Glasgows every move. But for Matawalu’s special try, Glasgows scoreline would have looked a lot worse.
In conclusion, Ross Ford was simply brilliant. Both in the Loose, and how he worked the Glasgow scrum.
Well done Edinburgh, and although was hoping for a Glasgow wine, this was good for the game.
Leinster 19/11 Ulster – 75th min.
Ruan Pienaar is playing for Ulster so his injury couldn’t have been that serious
Treviso 17/15 Zebre – 2nd win in a row for Marius Goosen’s men against Zebre
26 @ Just For Kicks:
Hi JFK yes Edinburgh certainly outplayed Glasgow, their dominance was quite marked in the set pieces, earning penalties with stron scrumming and Bresler and Toolis did well disrupting the lineout taking a few off Glasgow. Ross Ford is having his best season in a while, that is good for the national team.
