Kenya Rugby Union board member Godwin Karuga has resigned from Kenyan rugby and follows departing Sevens coach Paul Treu, whose tenure ended after the Port Elizabeth leg, out of the troubled Union.

The move will not surprise many who have witnessed an apparent implosion within which has culminated in the resignation of Treu.

In Treu’s decision to leave he revealed some members of the board had made his life as coach difficult.

The Star

In Karuga’s letter dated December 12 and addressed to Kenya Rugby Union chairman Mwangi Muthee Karuga he said: “With the current ongoings at the board, my continued stay at the board level is not tenable.

“I have put in every effort from within to try and rectify the current situation but to no avail.

“The events of the last few weeks have made it clear the situation is not improving.”

But, Karuga said he was still available to serve in any other capacities like refereeing and coaching as well as tournament organisation.

He concluded: “I wish to thank the members of the fraternity who have faith in me and elected me to the board and wish to assure them that I am still ready and available to continue serving the game.”

The KRU is currently under audit from firm Pannell Kerr Forster after it was recomended by the club chairman in October following a meeting with the patron’s society.

The patrons society and sponsors were unhappy with the organisation at the Safaricom Sevens in September at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.

However, even though there has been calls to end the audit from other senior members of the board Karuga disclosed he fully supports the it.

“I fully support the audit by PKF that is underway, that was recommended by club chairmen. I am still available to complete the ongoing mega projects that we had embarked on.”
