Cricket BallSouth Africa and the West Indies battled each other in the 1st 5-Day Cricket Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion. The Test was supposed to run from 17 to 21 December 2014, but ended a day and a half early. Play was weather delayed on Day 1 due to a wet outfield, with the Test due to start at 10:30 SA Time (08:30 GMT). The delay was only 30 minutes and play started at 11:00 SA Time on Day 1. The weather was quite overcast in Centurion on Day 1.

The score cards were updated at regular intervals here on Rugby-Talk.com.

The West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl, to exploit the weather conditions.

The South Africans started fast and the first wicket only fell on 57 runs… but then 2 more wickets fell on the same score. At 57 / 3 Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers steadied the ship and batted the whole day, stringing up the runs till close of play on Day 1.

On Day 2 both AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla quickly went over 150 runs each, before AB de Villiers perished on 152. Hashim Amla reached a landmark 208 before being caught in the deep, right near the boundary markers. Stiaan van Zyl started nervously on debut… but then reached his 101 not out, when Captain Amla declared with the Proteas on 552 / 5, after 140.3 Overs. Quinton de Kock ended on 18 not out in the process.

During the Innings Break, Tea was also called… and then rain delayed play from resuming… and further play on Day 2 was eventually abandoned and Stumps was called very early after heavy rains had fallen in Centurion.

On Day 3 the Proteas dismissed the West Indies with ease in their First Innings, still 351 runs behind. The follow-on was enforced. At Stumps on Day 3 the West Indies were already reeling at 76 / 2.

On Day 4, the Proteas did not fool around, dismissing the rest of the West Indies batting lineup, only 3 balls into the 2nd Session of the day, for a measly 131. Dale Steyn took 6 wickets on Day 4 and South Africa easily wins with an Innings and 220 runs.

Seriously back to the drawing board for the West Indies, I suggest!

South Africa:

First Innings – 552 / 5 declared (140.3 Overs)

West Indies:

First Innings – 201 All Out (60.2 Overs)
Second Innings – 131 All Out (42.3 Overs)

One feels that the only thing here which could prevent a result, is if the weather does not play it’s part later today and on Day 4 and / or Day 5.

  • 182

    @ grootblousmile:
When the Proteas reached 500 odd the only result on the cards was an innings victory.
Windies are a second rate team, only the weather can save them, as you mentioned

  • 183

Oops Stiaan that was a WIDE, WIDE… WIDE…

    … and then another one…

BUT, well done on your TON in the 1st Innings, Stiaan!

  • 184

Stiaan did well with his medium pacers in the afternoon. Much more better than ABCD’s.

  • 185

    Stumps Day 3

Windies already reeling at 76 / 2, with 27 Overs bowled in the Windies 2nd Innings, still 275 runs behind.

Firstly the gutless wonders at Sony are as smooth as a Ken doll

    186 @ ryecatcher:
There’s lots of speculation that we are looking at the new face of MODERN WARFARE, where a country’s top companies, communications infrastructure, banking sectors will in future be targeted by armies of Cyberhackers.

Sony Pictures was the company / group attacked but it is speculated that it was a trial run for much bigger things.

It is also suggested by the CIA that the attack was directed and performed by the North Korean government.

Sony Pictures’ servers were attacked and a lot of personal and confidentail material and E-Mails were leaked. Sony, amongst others, cancelled the start of the movie, The Interview.

  • 189

The world over, we’re seeing a lot more cyber DoS (Denial of Service) and DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attacks… and if you ask me, it’s growing into a form of terrorism, and as soon as political motive is added to these attacks, it is nothing else but terrorism indeed.

Secondly O-Useless stood idly by and allowed a hostile foreign power to engage in cyber warfare and intimidate a company on US soil.

They also threatened theatres showing the film with acts of violence, that’s terrorism

Again the Great Golfer kept mum

We hope and pray Kim Jong-un threatens a black popcorn seller at the theatre, will surely spur O-Race-chip-on-his-shoulder into action.

    Is jy gereeld daarvoor?

    @ grootblousmile:Hello Victoria Bok.
Thanks GBS.So were Sony intimidated into cancellation of “The Interview” or were
    they being patriotic.
Forgive my stupidity, but should there not be a
“SUPER” firewall to prevent the hacking.?
Does this have any relevance to the
US intimidation of one of its citizens leaking
    secrets(Stone somebody) who
the US is trying to extradite from Switzerland?
And what is so menacing about “The Interview”

    Is it ultimately economic terrorism?

    Edward Snowdon from Russia?

    No I don’t think so

  • 198

    193 @ Victoriabok:

It’s a comedy about two guys sent to kill the leader of North Korea

He’s like god in North Korea, they (have to?) worship him

No-one is allowed to say anything negative about him in North Korea

And now they’ve pussy whipped the Hollywood liberals to do the same outside as well

If Sony had some balls they would have banded together with all the movie studio and theatre companies and released it everywhere on one day, or asked a hacker group like Anonymous to “hack” Sony again and to release it on Youtube for everyone to see

I think North Korea’s afraid their own people might get to see it and realize the Emperor has no clothes

    194 @ ryecatcher:
Hackers are a breed on their own, barely half human!

A typical hacker profile is usually male, between 14 and 30… most often highly, highly intelligent, sometimes genius level… and often of the common geek variety, who wants to prove a point to the world.

Sure, there are all sorts of security measures and “Firewalls”, but the more computers advance, the more hackers also advance.

Typically a hacker targets a vulnerability in a system, as an entry point, which then allows them to slip in at the back door, so to speak…. hacking sequences of code (serious programming code or “Hacking “Software”) is then installed / executed (and frankly there are too many ways and far too little time to discuss them here)… which start doing the damage in the form of loops and generating an inordinate amount of traffic… which then basically makes the computer hardware inable to handle it. It causes bottlenecks, high CPU usage, memory failure and all sorts of kak, which then cause systems to fail.

Getting Systems to fail, is a very regular means of attack OR hacking and stealing of information, also very popular.

  • 204

    202 @ Victoriabok:
Dit was op 28 Augustus 2013, as ek reg onthou…. of was DIT nou die datum van die Afrihost en MTN aanval… nie seker nie.

  • 205

    @ ryecatcher@186:
Well, it will teach CIO’s not to challenge hackers.

Nobody know who and how this hack was done, so blaming North Korea is pure speculation. There are hunderds of these kind of hack each year, the only reason that this one get so much attention is because they got the salaries of famous people.

To secure such a big network as Sony Entertainment is impossible, but they could have done more. Sony has been hacked many times before.

  • 206

    @ grootblousmile:
The biggest question I ask is how much bandwidth has Sony got. I mean, 12TB of data going out unnoticed on you network in 2 or 3 weeks, jeez.

  • 207

    206 @ leon:
12TB of Data, these days is not much at all… it is tiny in the larger scheme of things.

One can now buy a 6TB or 8TB Hard drive for your personal PC.

My personal NAS Bay (Network Assisted Storage) has double that capacity!

  • 208

    @ grootblousmile:
Yea, but to get it out of a network, over internet, in one week, unnoticed. On any network in SA, it will get noticed.

  • 209

    208 @ leon:
Bandwidth in 1st World Countries and in Large Corporations in the States, is out of this world…. your mouth will hang open when you hear the figures that large corporations talk about!
