South Africa and the West Indies battled each other in the 1st 5-Day Cricket Test at SuperSport Park, Centurion. The Test was supposed to run from 17 to 21 December 2014, but ended a day and a half early. Play was weather delayed on Day 1 due to a wet outfield, with the Test due to start at 10:30 SA Time (08:30 GMT). The delay was only 30 minutes and play started at 11:00 SA Time on Day 1. The weather was quite overcast in Centurion on Day 1.
The score cards were updated at regular intervals here on Rugby-Talk.com.
The West Indies won the toss and elected to bowl, to exploit the weather conditions.
The South Africans started fast and the first wicket only fell on 57 runs… but then 2 more wickets fell on the same score. At 57 / 3 Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers steadied the ship and batted the whole day, stringing up the runs till close of play on Day 1.
On Day 2 both AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla quickly went over 150 runs each, before AB de Villiers perished on 152. Hashim Amla reached a landmark 208 before being caught in the deep, right near the boundary markers. Stiaan van Zyl started nervously on debut… but then reached his 101 not out, when Captain Amla declared with the Proteas on 552 / 5, after 140.3 Overs. Quinton de Kock ended on 18 not out in the process.
During the Innings Break, Tea was also called… and then rain delayed play from resuming… and further play on Day 2 was eventually abandoned and Stumps was called very early after heavy rains had fallen in Centurion.
On Day 3 the Proteas dismissed the West Indies with ease in their First Innings, still 351 runs behind. The follow-on was enforced. At Stumps on Day 3 the West Indies were already reeling at 76 / 2.
On Day 4, the Proteas did not fool around, dismissing the rest of the West Indies batting lineup, only 3 balls into the 2nd Session of the day, for a measly 131. Dale Steyn took 6 wickets on Day 4 and South Africa easily wins with an Innings and 220 runs.
Seriously back to the drawing board for the West Indies, I suggest!
South Africa:
First Innings – 552 / 5 declared (140.3 Overs)
West Indies:
First Innings – 201 All Out (60.2 Overs)
Second Innings – 131 All Out (42.3 Overs)

Kaptein
Well done captain Amla on the double ton
73 @ grootblousmile:
A lot of the times the thunderstorms will be steered in from the southwest and so affect you guys before Pretoria, but not all the time, otherwise it would be far too easy. Many times the ones from the southwest can be the dangerous ones in terms of lightning and hail and winds as well, sometimes though thunderstorms also come in from the northwest and affect Pretoria first before you, many of these originating in Botswana and I can remember a lot of them coming in with really heavy rain.
SA 517/4 at drinks break, Amla 207 and v Zyl 85 at the crease, v Zyl is too close to the ton for Amla to declare now, may as well bat till tea and then declare, that way will save some time for the innings change if it happens over tea time rather than during play before tea or in the session after, hope have not put the mockers on v Zyl now.
Weather looks horrible now. Hearing thunder as well.
@ Bullscot:
I think its one of those south eastern storms today. In that case no more cricket today.
@ Bullscot:
Its one of those things. People always used to complain that smith is too defensive in his declarations. hash is a bit more aggressive. Count on qdk coming in with a ODI mindset.
96 @ Bullscot:
This time round, looking at the grounds there at SuperSport Park, the rain is coming directly from OR Tambo Airport side… so right in line with me, then Nortie, then Centurion.
Sort of more South South-East… this time round, it seems.
Eishhhhhhhhh….. don’t talk to me about heavy thunder and lightning, I bloody well lost a lot of stuff last Thursday night early when lightning hit our house directly.
Amla departs for 208, cought in the deep (on the ropes)
Blomme 520 / 5
Think I’ll go to Midrand tomorrow morning… and give yet another funeral (a friend of Handbriekie’s dad) a miss.
99 @ MacroBlom:
I mean there should be some more cricket today
Gosh no point in tuening the tvs volume up
Well done Stian
Excellent Stiaan.
No lift the run rate.
I think the rain maybe have gone paat the stadium? East to west
Hashim Amla declares on 552 / 5
Gosh i love amlas captaincy. Really backs his bowlers.
They have also taken Tea now, on Day 2, at the same time as the Innings Break.
Light rain apparently falling now at SuperSport Park, Centurion… and the covers are on as a precaution.
I hope Stiaan recognizes that this was a very very easy hundred and he still got dropped early. Lot to work on. Especially playing of the legside against spin bowlers.
Stumps has been called on Day 2… due to the rain.
@ MacroBlom:
I hope you recognise that that is a very very silly comment. 😆
The guy got a ton on debut.
Cut him some slack.
114 @ IAAS:
😆
WTF
114 @ IAAS:
Well done to Stiaan for his TON on debut… but heck even you have to take into account where the Windies are at present, 8th on the World rankings (just above Zimbabwe & Bagladesh) and with Roach injured and thus with a very depleted and quite frankly somewhat toothless bowling attack.
So, although Stiaan did well… on debut, I think you would bat well against the Blind School too…
HAAS, you remind me of a song my late Dad used to sing to us when he felt a bit naughty… hehehe
The song basically has words to this effect:
Hasie, hasie bloubal
Parra het gepoep
Konyntjie steek sy vinger in sy hol
En skilpad skree net poi-poi
… a lot of utterly useless words, but in the right atmosphere, it made quite an impression…
If you catch my drift… right?
@ grootblousmile:
You’re talking about the Windies having us 3 down before lunch on the 1st day.
You’re sounding like Nortie going on about the Argie rugby side.
Don’t make me laugh.
Well done to all the centurions at Centurion !!
Like they / we always say: you play as well as the opposition allow(s) you to play. Let’s not forget that jacques Rudolph scored his maiden ton against the “mighty” Bangladesh!! Nobody is taking it away from him (JR) that he is one of FIVE SA cricket players to have achieved that !! So let’s pay the same respect towards Stiaan !!
@ charlesm:
Hi Charles. words of wisdom as always.
And Rudolf’s ton was a double ton if I remember correctly.
Stiaan had to go in after a massive partnership between Hash and AB. So often the next guy goes and gets out cheaply. I’ve seen it far too often. But Stiaan was doing it on debut. Just give credit where it’s due.
But credit here comes with a disclaimer. 🙄
117 @ IAAS:
Other than 3 wickets falling on the score of 57 (Blomme), what did the Windies offer in 2 Days of bowling, where the weather conditions should have suited them after THEY won the toss?
Seriously.. the Windies (like Macro remarked middle of Day 2 [earlier today]), seemed to only have a 2-man bowling attack… and he was getting bored at the time.
Look, the Windies are still an international side, and I suppose if one relaxes too much, they could punish you… but they’re not exactly flush at present, compared to the dangerous Windies of old.
I suppose we’ll see what their batting is capable of tomorrow.
Macro has a valid point as far as Stiaan goes… Stiaan looked unsteady and very unsure and far less than solid at times early on, specially on leg side against spin. He hung in there though and battled it out for his TON.
