Five Springboks have been nominated for the prestigious SA Rugby Player of the Year Award for 2014 with one of Nizaam Carr, Marcell Coetzee, Willie le Roux, Handré Pollard or Duane Vermeulen in line to claim the coveted annual award for the first time in their careers.

The five players, who all played for the Boks this year, have been nominated by the South African rugby media following a stellar year on the field. Springbok rugby fans across the globe will now be given a voice in the selection of the winner, SARU announced on Friday.

The public will also be asked to cast their votes in two other categories, Young Player and the Absa Team of the Year. To cast your vote, CLICK HERE.

Carr and Pollard have also being named in the Young Player category, along with Cheslin Kolbe, Seabelo Senatla and Jan Serfontein. The Junior Springboks, Springboks, Springbok Sevens, DHL Western Province and Xerox Golden Lions have been nominated as Absa Team of the Year.

Public polling for the three awards will open on Friday 5 December 2014 with all the winners to be announced at a gala event on 8 February 2015 in Midrand.

The public can make their vote, which is powered by social marketing platform Spredfast, for the top awards on SARU’s website or by using (for example) #YPOTYNizaamCarr on Twitter*. Voting will also take place through SARU’s official digital Springbok Magazine, where subscribers can cast their votes.

Jurie Roux, SARU CEO said: “It is again very pleasing that we are able to give our rugby fans a voice in the game, and the SARU Player of the Year Awards is an ideal platform to do so. The last two years proved that supporters have strong opinions on who should win and that feedback was great, hence the decision to make the public part of the polling process again.

“The Awards are a highlight on the South African rugby calendar, and involving the fans and coaches more directly will no doubt add to the prestige of the event,” said Roux.

Media, coaches and players had a major say in determining the outstanding players of the season in a range of categories and competitions.

Other awards on the night include for the outstanding players in Vodacom Super Rugby, Absa Currie Cup Premier and First Division and Vodacom Cup competitions, as well as for the Absa Coach of the Year, SA Under-20 Player of the Year, Springbok Sevens Player of the Year, Women’s Achiever of the Year, SARPA Players’ Player of the Year, Supersport Try of the Year, Marriott Referee Award, Cell C Community Cup Player of the Tournament and Coca-Cola Craven Week Player of the Tournament.

The closing date for public voting is Friday 12 December 2014 at 14:00.

THOR should get it… he deserves it.

Rumours that Eben will be leaving for Toulon after the world cup. Geez, a LOT of players will be leaving our shores… while the other half of the Sharks team will retire.

Farkit, am I the only one that is struggling with loading times on this site for the last month? It is tedious.

    3 @ MacroBok:
    Nothing wrong this side!

  • 5

    @ grootblousmile:
It is not all the time, I have noticed it since the last few live game articles on both my phone and PC.

  • 6

    @ grootblousmile:
Like I would post something and it would just load and load and load.

I am asking if it is only me, then the problem is obviously only on my side.

  • 7

    5 @ MacroBok:
I have recently (yesterday) run the Page Load speed tests, as I do every few days (and specially during high load times)… and in the last month the average speeds have actually increased as people wind down towards the end of the year and as rugby interest in the Southern Hemisphere wanes during Off-Season.

Must be someting connected to your ISP or the built up cache on your PC and Mobile device

I am not having issues personally

  • 9

    @ grootblousmile:
    thanks, ill check it out

    9 @ MacroBok:
    Do you use ADSL?
If so, what ADSL Modem do you use… name, Model ect.
    Who’s your ISP?

Depending on your answers, I might have some suggestions… which mostly revolve around releasing some DNS Server Addresses, by temporarily choosing some other STATIC ones, then switching back to DYNAMIC ones when done…

Basically telling the ISP to give you a new lease, so as to speak…

It just happened again 🙄 , I post a comment and then it loads and loads till it times out, but I could open another tab and even news24 without a problem.

  • 12

    @ grootblousmile:
Dit gebeur by die huis/werk/Selfoon netwerk.

    So ISP is Telkom/MTN

  • 13

    11 @ MacroBok:
    Cache…. clear cache

Pollard probably only there because of his award as Junior Player of the Year because apart from the one game at Ellis Park against the AB, he has done nothing in senior rugby. He’s probably going to get YPOTY although Carr would be more deserving.

Vermeulen has no opposition as POTY. He’ll probably get Player’s Player of the Year as well to cap off a brilliant 2014 for him.

Blitzbokke should be Team of the Year with Powell walking away as Coach of the Year.

  • 17

Not a big fan of letting the public decide the major categories like POTY, YPOTY and Team of the Year (TOTY doesn’t) seem right 😆 )

Too much provincialism in SA rugby for that to be fair. Also, it os just a money making scheme by the powers that be, if you ask me.

Rather let the fans vote for a Fan’ Rugby Player of the Year and leave it at that.

It gives an opportuniry for a player to walk away with 3 POTY awards as voted for by the rugby journalist and a selected panel of ex-players, his fellow players and the fans. The player who get the award from all three categories can undoubtedly be regarded as the best for that season.

I also mostly have problems with very slow response times when using my Blackberry. I’ve taken reception in certain areas into account but I think it’s still too slow.

I cleared all the “history” out of sites visited last week & still the problem persists.

Roll on bonus time so I can buy Skop’s Nokia!

    Aitog.

    😆

  • 20

    @ gunther:
Not much of a response, is it?

Do you have an opinion on the nominations though and who would be your favourites to receive the rewards?
    😀

  • 21

    18 @ BrumbiesBoy:
Blackberry is so… well… last year… or before last year!!

Young Player of the Year – Pollard the ideal candidate. He did exceptional in the Junior World Cup, then scored 2 tries for the Senior Bokke against the All Blacks from up close and gravitated as one of the 2 prime Flyhalf candidates for the Bokke.

Duane Vermeulen for Player of the year – THOR has had a monsterous year and is now solidly the entrenched No 8 in SA, if not the World.

Team of the Year is a toss-up between the Junior Springboks and the Blitzbokke.

I think next year will be Carr’s year…. so much potential to be realized there!

  • 23

    @ Nama:

Forgive me I was making reference to Brumbies Boys reference to Fuckadillies Nokkia.

    Fool.

    😆

However your views whilst about as surprising as Hondkak’s are duly noted.

    😆

  • 24

    @ grootblousmile:
I’m not so sure that Pollard’s exploits during the JWC should count in his favour as these awards are about performances throughout the year in senior rugby. Apart from his performance against the AB, there’ not much that one can think of afa his performances in senior rugby are concerned. Guys like Carr, Kolbe, Senatla and a few Lions players made a much bigger impact on the senior rugby scene.

  • 25

    @ gunther:
    Of course.
    😆

  • 26

    @ gunther:
23 Frank?Frank is that really you?
    Can it be?

    FRANK THE TANK 😛 😀 😀

  • 27

    24 @ Nama:
The Award: Young Player of the Year… does not specify that it has to be performances in SENIOR RUGBY.

Face it, you have something against Pollard.

Carr is a bloody good player, I seriously rate him… but to be honest he only got chances as a sub in 2 Springbok Tests.
Kolbe, another huge talent, did not even make the Bokke side
Senatla is a Sevens star and has marvelous prospects in the 15-man game, but sadly was not picked to play in the End Of Year Tour… so no Senior Bok Cap for him yet.

The Players in the Lions who really stood out, like Jaco Kriel, is not close to young anymore, Kriel specifically has been playing for the Lions since 2010….. 4 years already.

Your bias against Pollard is palpable, and comes out so regularly, that it is wearing thin.

  • 28

    My VOTES are in:

Player Of The Year: Duane Vermeulen
Young Player Of The Year: Handré Pollard
Team Of The Year: Junior Springboks

  • 29

    @ grootblousmile:

    And you are suprised why?

Just thank your stars Serfontein didn’t get nominated.

Kolbe and co had a good Currie Cup but then we’re not really comparing apples with apples.

Nama and Hondkak are two sides of the same coin sadly.
