Rupeni CaucaunibucaFormer Fiji wing Rupeni Caucaunibuca has ended his unhappy second stint with French second division side Agen by mutual consent.

Caucaunibuca, more commonly referred to simply as Caucau, had played only 87 minutes for the Pro D2 side this season, having returned for a second spell following a highly successful first stint from 2004-09.

Back then, when Agen were in the French Top 14, Caucau twice finished as top try-scorer in the league.

He moved on to giants Toulouse in 2010 and then in 2012 returned to Northland in New Zealand, where he had also played Super Rugby for the Blues.

Agen said the explosive 34-year-old had asked to have his contract terminated.

Back in September he had asked to go home to Fiji to fetch his wife and family but didn’t turn up again until early November, alone.

Caucau exploded on to the international rugby scene with a sensational performance at the 2003 World Cup in Australia, scoring brilliant tries against France and Scotland.

Considered one of the best wings in the world in the 2000s, he scored nine tries in seven Tests for Fiji, plus one try on his only appearance for the Pacific Islanders, but was often in trouble with the authorities.

He was suspended for a year by the Fiji team in 2005 for missing a flight to Samoa, while in 2007 he incurred a three-month ban after testing positive for cannabis following a match for Agen.

His career has been blighted by weight problems, visa and passport issues, and late arrivals both for his club and country.

But when he was fit and playing, he was widely regarded as one of the best wings ever to grace the game.
