FranceAustraliaFrance coach Philippe Saint-Andre insisted the best side won after their 29-26 victory over Australia on Saturday.

The Wallabies almost snatched victory late in Paris after Rob Simmons reduced the deficit to three points in the dying minutes at the Stade de France.

But France held on for the win after Ben Alexander dropped the ball in the final minute as the home team recorded just their third victory against Australia since 2005.

Post-game, Saint-Andre was adamant his team were deserved winners, despite almost throwing away the lead.

“I truly believe the best team won today,” said Saint-Andre.

“Today we can be happy about the intensity and the ferocity the entire French side displayed during the game.

“Even if at the end of the first half we lacked physical impact, and the same can be said at the end of the second half as well, we stuck to our game plan and showed great enthusiasm and desire to win.

“As soon as we were on the ball, we put a lot of pressure on them. Now we will take the time to appreciate this achievement tonight.

“After that we will start to prepare from tomorrow for the next big game against Argentina.”

Saturday’s success was the first time Thierry Dusautoir had captained France to victory against the Wallabies and the 32-year-old was understandably pleased.

“This victory will bring us a lot of positive because we were on a run of three straight defeats against Australia,” Dusautoir said.

“To succeed in beating them tonight is a huge boost to the team. It is not only about the final result, but also about the way we played and how we put them under pressure.

“We were successful in implementing our game plan and worked hard. We had a very good performance in defence as well and that put them in a lot of trouble.”

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika said his players need to train harder and more consistently if they are to avoid another poor display such as their 29-26 defeat to France.

The Wallabies gave away 18 turnovers in Saturday’s match, which they almost won after a late rally.

But Cheika admitted his side deserved to lose and warned his players to put in more effort during training to avoid similar results in the future.

“The biggest thing for us is about making ourselves consistent,” said the coach.

“We can play well but we have to do it every week and that comes from training well every day, keeping the standard high for yourself,” Cheika added.

“That isn’t something that’s going to happen in a few weeks, that’s something we’ve got to keep working at… so that nights like tonight are very rare and not once every three or four matches.”

Australia’s performance was a far cry from their 33-28 victory over Wales in Cardiff a week earlier.

Cheika felt they were fortunate to still be in with a chance near the end, particularly after France produced a dazzling first half with tries from Sebastien Tillous-Borde and Teddy Thomas but only led 17-16 at the break.

“In rugby you can’t have a consistent upward evolution, it’s not exponential,” Cheika said.

“Some days you do well, and some days you don’t. On this day, when the opportunities were there, we didn’t take them at all.”

Cheika blamed losses in concentration for turnovers at crucial times.

“Often we had really good positions to launch attacks from, whether line-outs in their half or even when we took a tap down there we played our way down there and then just turned the ball over.

“We didn’t concentrate in key moments and paid the penalty,” he said.

“Any game when a player has a job to do, either he does it well or he doesn’t. The hand goes up and you take the pass and hold onto the ball, or you don’t.”

The coach would not blame any single player or moment for the defeat, however, rather a series of small, but costly, errors.

“It wasn’t one thing that really stood out – the charge down, a couple of line-outs we didn’t work right, a couple of dropped balls in key positions. It was a mix of small, different areas that all accumulated.

“I was actually pretty surprised that we were in with a shout towards the end because the way we played shouldn’t have put us there.”

3 Responses to End Of Year Tours: Best side won – France BETTER than Wallabies

Really not sure we are the better team

but Australia did not deserve to win and we did not deserve to lose

Agressive defense from France won the game with the correlative handling errors from the yellow side

    Wallabies did lack creativity
difficult to rate high this much too classical N°9 do not even remember his name

The only dangerous guy still is Folau who had a terrible game fumbling high balls missing passes till the 70 mn

Good news for France we tried to play rugby and used our wings quickly
a tremendous try for Teddy Thomas
where the 6 beaten wallabies looked like slow motion labradors trying to hunt a cat in a video gag

our new 10 lopez (Clermont) can vary
    nicely
we pray for him to improve his field kicking

coaching was good with Bastareaud coming to the field when we were tired
and on this remembrance day calling for the mobilization of wallabies defenders by grap

    our scrumage was low
what the hell happens to us !!!!

skelton did harm us when entering
i do not see cheika not puttinh him in the team next time

public mood was high but stadium was not full… (at 90% of capacity)
and the tour of honour took so long to come that we were only 3 thousands to thank les bleus for not losing again

we still wonder what conversation Mr Owens had with captain hooper
I guess he had at least 5 variations of the sentence
“your guys are at the limit, I warn you next time I will repeat what I just said”
he was definitly too delicate and decided that yellow did not fit the yellow/orange tunique and was better assorted with our new blue shirt

some news from our French Legion

spedding did miss two important tackles
and apart from good kicking and putting their N°2 on his butt did not bring what was expected

    good entry from Kockott
with a counter on the poor philipps
    good defense
    good troops motivation

Atonio was on one leg 10 mn after entering
did not make a fool of himself on the last scrum
easy to catch on the field as he is so huge…

    A good day
    at the end…

logically we should lose against argentinians to celebrate
    just kidding…

    @ rebop75:
It is a bit difficult for Australia, with their key players Folau and Hooper playing nearly non stop all year.

    Spedding’s defense was disappointing.

  • 3

WE (and the english) play non stop full year… year after year
our summer tours are a lottery and all these tours tend to mean less and less due to injury and phys condition on both sides…
    Time to reform the calendar

and yes spedding defense was pretty bad
our injured dulin or badly injured bonneval sem to be better in the one to one mohican role defending the line
the only good point for spedding on this match was his kicking

I have been disppointed by the wallabies clearly lacking some creativity especially when compared to the Toulon trio Giteau Mitchell O’Connor
