WhistleThe two REFEREES for the Currie Cup Premier Division Semi-Finals of 2014 have been revealed.

Jaco van Heerden will take charge of the first Semi-Final between the Xerox Golden Lions and Cell C Sharks at Ellis Park (kick-off at 14:30 SA Time).

Van Heerden will be assisted by Ben Crouse and Sieg van Staden, while Johan Greeff will be the TMO.

Pro Legoete will handle duties in the second Semi-Final at Newlands between DHL Western Province and the Vodacom Blue Bulls (kick-off at 17:00 SA Time).

Legoete will have Marius Jonker and Linston Manuels as his assistant referees and Deon van Blommestein as the TMO.

Meanwhile it has been reported that South African referee Rasta Rasivhenge, one of the most experienced match officials in the HSBC Sevens World Series, will be based in Australia for the foreseeable future as he has opted to take a sabbatical from the local game.

Rasivhenge, who refereed the final of the Gold Coast Sevens on Sunday, made this decision for personal reasons as he’s getting married soon. He will continue to referee on the HSBC Sevens World Series.

“Rasta informed me of his plans recently and he goes with our blessing, as we believe he will further expand his refereeing horizons and will hopefully return a better and more experienced match official in due course,” said André Watson, General Manager of Referees at the South African Rugby Union.

“We will miss his bubbly personality that he takes onto the field, even in heated situations. He will continue to referee on the Sevens circuit. At this stage, the plan is that he will return to South Africa at the conclusion of the current Sevens World Series.”

2 Responses to Currie Cup: Referees named for Semis, Rasta to take a sabatical

Is the knockout phase of SA’s premier Rugby competition the right place to further expose “up and coming” referees to a higher level, whilst having more senior officials (Marius Plonker er I mean Jonker) “running the line”?

It was widely accepted that Pro had something of a disaster when officiating the Sharks – Lions game recently, a fact rather diplomatically admitted by Jonathon Kaplan, and now he (Pro) is “rewarded” with a semi-final.

All seems a bit absurd to me.

I sincerely hope he doesn’t send a Province player to the bin for F-ALL reason with 12 minutes to go like he did to Minnie, and in so doing hand the game to the Bulls.

OK OK, I do hope he does so. Then the Lions should have a home semi!

    Happy-Grin

I think you all get my point though, and if you don’t, find a re-run of that Sharks – Lions game to watch and make an informed decision on the suitability of Pro’s officiating capabilities to handle a semi-final!

Oh and I find it somewhat strange that Rasta is taking a sabattical in AUSTRALIA of all places.

Is he marrying an Aussie chick?
