South AfricaThe Springbok starting line-up to face Australia shows three changes, with Teboho “Oupa” Mohoje and Francois Hougaard included for Saturday’s fifth round Test in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship at DHL Newlands in Cape Town.

Francois Louw’s injury means a positional switch for Marcell Coetzee in the starting team. There is a further four changes on the bench, with Cobus Reinach in line to make his Springbok debut alongside the experienced trio of Bakkies Botha, Schalk Burger and JP Pietersen.

The Springbok selectors opted for continuity, retaining the core of the squad that performed well but came up short in tough away fixtures against Australia and New Zealand earlier this month.

“Injuries forced our hand with Francois and Ruan Pienaar not available, but Hougie and Oupa have been part of the squad for the entire season and I’ve got the utmost confidence in them making the step up,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“Francois brings different strengths to the team at No 9 and has an opportunity to demonstrate the contribution he can make on Saturday, while Oupa is more of a traditional blindside flanker who will get another opportunity to show what he can do in his breakthrough season. He has really come on in leaps and bounds this season and responded to the goals set for him.”

Mohoje will get his first start for the Springboks after making his debut off the bench against Scotland in June. It will be another milestone in a remarkable season, in which he started playing Varsity and Vodacom Cup rugby before getting his break in Vodacom Super Rugby after the Toyota Cheetahs lost a number of loose forwards to injury.

Bok coach Heyneke Meyer says he is excited about 24-year-old Mohoje, known locally as ‘Oupa’, and believes this will be the start of a long international career.

“Oupa will be a great Springbok, he has all the attributes and he has been training hard and giving a lot,” Meyer told reporters on Wednesday. “He is good in the line-outs and a good ball-carrier. I have a good feeling about him, I think he will have a great game.”

Meyer said he chose the rookie over Burger as he had been part of the travelling squad to Australia and New Zealand while the 2007 World Cup winner has only recently returned to the team after a stint in Japan.

“Schalk has only been with us for a few days, so it was better for our continuity,” Meyer said.

The team’s selection was under heavy scrutiny this week amid a renewed push for the Springboks to select a quota of black or coloured players in the Test team.

Meyer denied it had influenced his selection of Mohoje, saying he had flagged a start against the Wallabies with the promising Cheetahs youngster as early as last week.

“There’s really no pressure,” he said. “I will pick the guys who I believe are the best.

“Oupa’s good in the lineout and a strong ball-carrier.”

It will be Hougaard’s first start for the Springboks since the final Test in 2012, against England at Twickenham.

Meyer said tactical needs had led to the changes on the bench: “We felt we needed a couple of cool and experienced heads late in our matches and that is where Bakkies, Schalk, JP, Pat Lambie and Bismarck du Plessis will play a vital role – all of them have more than 30 caps.

“I’m also very happy for Cobus, who will follow in the footsteps of his late father having never even played first team at school or any national representative rugby, which is a great compliment for the structures at the Sharks.”

Meyer said the team was under no illusions about Saturday’s Test: “It will be a very tough outing and we will have to fire on all cylinders for the full 80 minutes,” he said. “It’s great to be back in South Africa after three tough matches on the road and we’re really looking forward to playing in front of our own supporters again.

“We’ve had a couple of great training sessions and have been working hard on all aspects of our game this week. There is a definite resolve to improve the quality of our performance on Saturday.”

In line with an agreement with the provinces, Lwazi Mvovo and Warren Whiteley have been released to play in the Absa Currie Cup this weekend. They will re-join the Springbok squad in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Stats and facts:

  • The Springbok starting team boasts a total of 615 Test caps (274 in the backline and 341 in the forwards), while there are a further 314 caps worth of experience on the bench.
  • South Africa and Australia have played each other 79 times since 1933, with the Springboks winning 44 Tests, losing 34 and one was drawn. The Springboks have scored 1,524 points and 180 tries and conceded 1,381 points and 141 tries for an average score of 19-17.
  • Jean de Villiers will extend his record as the most-capped Springbok centre, with 85 Tests in this position. He will also extend his South African Record of 48 Castle Lager Rugby Championship matches and will captain South Africa for the 29th time, which places him equal third with Francois Pienaar. John Smit (83) and Gary Teichmann (36) are the only players to have captained South Africa on more occasions.
  • Victor Matfield will extend his record as the most-capped Springbok in history (115 Tests). He will also extend his record of 115 Tests as a lock and will be playing against Australia for the 26th time to extend his record.

  • If he goes on Cobus Reinach will become Springbok No. 864. He and his late father Jaco will become the 12th pair of father and sons to play for South Africa, the previous pair being Flip and Flippie van der Merwe. Jaco, who played four Tests for South Africa in 1986 against the New Zealand Cavaliers, was a double Springbok – in rugby and athletics.
  • If he appears and scores a try, Bismarck du Plessis will extend his record of nine Test tries for South Africa as a hooker.
  • The referee is Nigel Owens of Wales. This will be his 11th Test involving South Africa. The Springboks have won six and lost four of the previous Tests in which he has officiated. The last time he was in charge of the Boks was in the Test against New Zealand on 5 October, 2013 at Ellis Park in Johannesburg, which the visitors won, 38-27.

23 Responses to The Rugby Championship: Springboks – Three changes to team

    Bokke should win at Newlands.
Team is what Rapport said it would be on Sunday already, no surprises.
HM would have loved to put Schalk in the starting line up, but the flak he would have gotten would have been too much.
Already he has used Juan and Marcell to bypass Oupa, so to do it for the third time would have been suicidal for him.

    Oupa, the Bok,,,, 😉
It’s all up to McKenzie now, but a Wallabies win seemed feasible

  • 3

With the kwota being 4 POC’s Oupa was always going to play, but lets see what he can do.

    Go Bokke

  • 4

    One…two…three…huh…huh…f…f…fo…four.

  • 5

    @ Hondo:
Don’t think the Wallabies will win.
Boks should have enough to pull this one through at home

  • 6

I really dont like to criticise ANY coach but I really struggle to understand the logic behind a great deal of the call ups as replacements and the methods that they are utilised.

Maybe the shrink knows the logic.

Just as well our national coach doesnt design a d sign off high rise buildings!

  • 7

Not a bad team, considering the current injury situation.

    Worried about scrumhalf though….

  • 8

    @ Scrumdown:
    @ grootblousmile:
Have a look at the thoughts of Brendan Venter about how the Boks should play and the personnel chosen

I am on the sideline for now,
McKenzie hasn’t announced his team yet, if he drops Palu and Kepu for Higgin and Alexander I might bet on an upset,
Remember Newlands in 2007? that mule kick of 65m that did in the Wallabies?

  • 11

    @ Hondo:
I see the bookies are backing the Boks.
I really think we should have enough to bore the Aussies into submission. Next week will be a different story

  • 12

    10 @ Hondo:
2007 was the two drop goals from Fattie, wasn’t it?

  • 13

    @ nortierd:
    12
    Indeed,
The Boks were 1 to 3.5 yesterday, they are now 1 to 3.2, an insignificant change though
And there’s still Nigel Owen to figure out, the SAs tycoons no longer support the Boks like they did in 2007 and 2009 (remember that private jet ferried top UK Barristers to save Fattie and SB from suspensions?) while SARU’s fortunes diminishing with the declining Rand, so poor Nigel may not swing it outright for the Boks 😉
    In short; a fair contest?

  • 14

    @ Hondo:
Aussies are even more skint, hell, they only managed to sell 14000 seats two weeks ago.
I’m sure the tycoons will be at Newlands to see SB 😆
Think HM is expecting a tight match and with all the veterans on the bench, it will be like WC 2007 against Fiji, bring on the bench to clinch the game

  • 15

    @ Hondo:
#10 Hi Hondo what do you mean you are”on the sideline for now”? You already know which way it will go these things are fixed I think is what you often tell us. Apologies if confusing you with someone else Pondering

  • 16

    @ Bullscot:
Hondo is so famous, they made a movie about him with no less than Mel Gibson playing the part of him 😆

  • 17

What I find ironic is that a day or so ago the “Boks were going to keep the Aussies guessing” about their team.
Yet, we are the 1st to announce our side of the 4 nations?
How did that keep them in the dark?
All the opposition need to do in any case is hire a translated and read the Rapport on a Sunday a week before a match to know what the side will be.

  • 18

Bok’s should cruise this one, only gripe is Willie L starting. Had shocking game against AB’s and not great against Aus, Arg (ok weather wasn’t great). Still believe he should only be used as impact player, dry conditions. If he starts a game badly he doesn’t improve, he is a confidence player with not enough confidence.

  • 19

I don’t think this is going to be the ‘rout’ everyone is predicting. We have some holes in our side. Front row inconsistency. A new back-row combination which is totally untested. A dodgy 9 whom, besides the coach, no-one rates. A brand new 10. A new centre pairing trying to find themselves. And a 15 who is out of form even if its temporary. This Bok team is not the finished article by any stretch and a fool would bet the house on it. A small bet maybe.

  • 20

@ Best: Should? Maybe? Doubt it. But I’ve been wrong before.

  • 22

a little bit rough in the end haha

  • 23

The match odds remains steady for the Boks at 1 to 3.3 by most on-line betting houses, so it’s a done deal or so it seemed.
    No upset, no drama?
