Schickerling, 19, who represented the Junior Boks at this year’s IRB Junior World Championship, sustained the injury in the fourth minute of the clash at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria last Saturday.

Schickerling is currently in a Pretoria hospital and is likely to be operated on for a second time to insert a protective plate in his neck to support his spine.

Despite the horrific injury, Schickerling said he is determined to recover and play rugby again.

    @ MacroBok:
Thanks for posting the clip, seems like it’s a combination.
The first hit was unintentional ( or seemed like that) Orie grabbing him around the neck obviously compounded the injury.
Wasn’t a Province player sent off with a yellow for grabbing Bismarck around the neck?
I remember Bissie throwing an awful Hollywood when that happened.

    @ nortierd:
I think the shoulder charge is illegal, the chokehold was probably a “gentler” version of what happens every game?

Damage was surely done by the first hit I think.

    @ MacroBok:
    True, I watched it again.
The charge probably did the damage, but it’s not as if he intentionally went out to injure him. He waited till he was on the ground and then charged in. I think JD wasn’t well positioned to take the hit and had no protection around him.
An unfortunate incident, thankfully he isn’t paralyzed.

“Orie will appear before a SARU disciplinary hearing on Tuesday, starting at 16:00 SA Time.” – sorry if I have missed it in comments somewhere but has there been any news of the outcome of the hearing or is it still being decided?
