“He is recovering well and is in relatively good spirits,” said Du Pisani.

“The safety of supporters is and remains our top priority.”

They also both emphasised a zero tolerance approach to violence in the stadium.

“We want to reassure the public that our security measures remain intact and that the stadium is a safe venue,” said Du Pisani.

The newspaper reports that the assailant quickly disappeared into the crowd. One witness said the fight was over a refereeing decision.

Stadium security officials arrived shortly after the incident to assist the injured man. He was treated by medical personnel at the scene before being taken by ambulance to Greenacres Hospital.

Stadium management and the Eastern Province Rugby Union confirmed the incident, saying a 20-year-old man was stabbed shortly before 21:00.

The Lions won the game 41-22.

Shocking. Wasn’t there a big fight here last year as well? Pity that the fans are spoiling it for the Kings. As much as I don’t like them, the people of PE are generally very nice, and it is a pit that a small minority of fans are ruining it for the majority. If things like this continue to happen, the true rugby supporters will stop going to the stadium. So NMBS management, get your crowd control up to scratch.

We had a big debate a few weeks ago about a referee being assaulted in Pretoria with some claiming the club should be held accountable.

Now OBvIOUSLY EP can not be held responsible for this, but they should be responsible for peoples safety.

What steps will be taken now? Will EP help cover this persons medical costs? I think they should.

Ironically yet again it is the refs fault, tough job that,

This is not the first time there has been untoward behaviour in the stands there.

    I hope Transie is ok.

    @ gunther:
Not to worry, I’m sure that that “Kings10 EC” Toyota Tazz was reverse-parked into Sheeky’s private bay allowing him to make a quick getaway.
