Chester Williams

Former Springbok wing Chester Williams wants to get involved in transforming rugby in South Africa.

In an interview with the Cape Times, Williams said he supported the SA Rugby Union’s new Transformation Strategic Plan, which aims to bring all of South Africa’s representative rugby teams, along with domestic teams in line with national targets in five years.

SARU wants to make sure that by 2019 at least half the Springbok side consists of players of colour, with 60% of those required to be black African.

Williams told the newspaper that for too long had there just been talk of transformation and not much action been taken.

The 1995 World Cup hero believes he is the right man to help SARU achieve its goals.

Williams said he wanted to partner with SARU to provide mentorship to players, help create goals and career plans for emerging black players, and acquire sponsorships to give more emerging black players opportunities to have training sessions.

Williams also said the lack if black coaches was a concern, questioning whether black players felt comfortable in an environment where the majority of coaches were white.

Williams, who played 27 Tests for South Africa between 1993 and 2000, previously coached the Springbok Sevens side, the Cats (Super Rugby), Pumas (Mpumalanga), Uganda, Tunisia and Romanian club Timisoara.

The 44-year-old said late last year that he would like a job in South African rugby.

I am just thinking, this “new” Transformation issue.

What is to stop Beast, Trevor, Oupa, Terror, Kolisi, Tyson, Sithole, Senatla…uhm who else? From negotiating MONSTER contracts? I mean the leverage these guys must have must be insane.

  • 2

Wont this ruin smaller unions like EP, Griquas, the Pumas, Cheetahs who can not afford to pay top dollar to be able to fill their sides with “quality” players?

  • 3

    Scarra.

  • 4

Hey Nortie, could you guys bring back the “Weekend teams” feature we had during SR for the CC season?

  • 5

    @ MacroBok:
You mean make one thread when all the teams have been made known?

    @ nortierd:
    Yes please,

Then GBS also summarized the whole season on one page:

    @ MacroBok:
How about combining the predictions and weekend teams?
Some of the sides only make their teams known very late, so as new predictions come in it will be updated, as well as when the sides are announced?

The official SARU Transformation plan by 2019

    1. vodacom cup (50%)
    2. Currie Cup (50%)

    7. Senior Amateur Competitions (50%)
    8. Springboks (45%)
    9. Springbok Sevens (50%)

    12. Team management at National Level (50%), and Provincial level.
    13. Increase of black coaches and referees involved at provincial and national level.

This is the good part of the transformation plan by 2019 not reported in the media.

    1. Increase participation in Primary Schools to 150 000 (They do not say how many participate now)
    2. Increase participation in High School to 30 000 (No more details)
    3. Establish community leagues/number of organized leagues within local municipalities.
    4. Establish talent identification programs, number the talented players in the communities and register on “Footprint”( not sure what that is)
    5. Establish workforce in communities/number of trained volunteers in community hubs.
    6. Roll out social cohesion in community programmes/ number of awareness programs (AIDS etc)
    7. Increase participation through a number of modified formats/new players (20 000 per year) non registered players for Boys and Girls, GET INTO RUGBY (GIR) Programme.
    8. Increase Number of training facilities, geographic information systems( GIR )/Rugby fields

    9. Increase number of affiliated operational clubs in rural areas.
    10. Increase number of school to club linkage to prevent drop out rates.
    11. Increase joint venture with government mass participation programme.

This is really all good and well, BUT who is going to bankroll this?

40% of women in senior management positions.

    Page 35,

Black presentation in the u/21 currie cup is only 9%?

I am seriously confused about the term BLack African in these documents, are coloureds termed as non-black?

    Chester Willams is a JOPPIE-SOEKER!

    Flok hom!

  • 20

    This is an interesting one

    Page 37

Black African girls representation in all Provincial matches

    2014 – 73%
    2015 – 50% (Projected)
    2016 – 53%
    2017 – 55%
    2018 – 57%
    2019 – 60%

Do they have to decrease the amount of black girls playing rugby by 23% by next year by increasing the amount of white/colored/Chinese girls?

    @ grootblousmile:
Well if you look at the transformation development plan it is highly unlikely that he won’t get involved anyway… Alistair Coetzee has to move on eventually.

Well then Hoskins and Jurie take care of that requirement.

I was confused looooong before you, since the 70s already Thinking and I have been asking this question ever since. Nobody even attempted to answer me over the years, doesn’t even say faaarkoff Pietman, stupid question or something….
    So, I have given up.

  • 24

    @ Pietman:
I know since 2008 the Chinese are considered black. Indian people do not qualify for BEE.

But seriously only 9% are black in the U/21 teams? That’s only 2 players.

  • 25

    @ MacroBok:
@20 Chinese are classified as ‘black’ in SA labour law (I suspect mainly to qualify for business finance under BEE).
But maybe they change again colour under rugby transformation regulations, wtf knows how these “great definers of race” think out there at their indabas.

    N paar weke terug

    Cell C Sharks under 21:
    15. Tim Swiel (W)
    14. Alcino Izaacs (?)
    13. Tyler Fisher (W)
    12. Andre Esterhuizen (W)
    11. Alrin Eksteen (?)
    10. Jean-Luc du Plessis (W)
    9. Stefan Ungerer (C) (W)
    8. Jean Pretoruis (W)
    7. Sias Koen (W)
    6. Ray Williams (W)
    5. Ferdie Horn (W)
    4. David Fisher (W)
    3. Brandon Landsberg (W)
    2. Jacques Taylor (W)
    1. Matthew Jones (W)

    Replacements
    16. Chris de Beer (W)
    17. Mees Erasmus (W)
    18. Johan Wagenaar (W)
    19. Johan Meyer (W)
    20. Hanco Venter (W)
    21. Gareth Meikle (W)
    22. Sipho Mkhize (B)

So 9% equals two players of colour.

Shocking actually that that is the minimum for junior teams.
