Boland Cavaliers

Boland Cavaliers coach Abe Davids has been suspended by the union after it emerged he had faked his qualifications.

According to the SA Rugbymag website, the union’s board has issued the suspension pending the outcome of a disciplinary investigation into his alleged coaching qualifications.

Davids, who is the brother of Boland president Francois, was appointed as Cavaliers head coach in September last year.

At the time of his appointment, Davids was given the opportunity to provide proof of the qualification, but the evidence has not been presented and inquiries to the IRB and SARU have confirmed that he did not have the IRB Level 3 coaching qualification at that stage.

The Boland Cavaliers are currently competing in the Currie Cup First Division where they are second from bottom on the overall log, having won only two out of eight matches.

They lost their most recent match 32-25 to the Falcons in Wellington last weekend.

    Affirmative Action strikes again.

    Why am I not surprised?

What this post doesn’t point out is that SARU have been covering for Davids and actively trying to cover the story up.

Graham Joffe has been pushing SARU on this (and other) issue(s) for a while and has been given a right royal run around.

Joffe also points out a number of other issues regarding the Boland “Academy” and the acconmodation for it’s players that is actually owned by member(s) of the Boland board and rented to the Union.

Quite a tangled web of (not so) corporate governance being inticately woven down there in the Cape it would seem.

Time for SARU to also stop the BS regarding protecting people and trying to hide all of the under the table deals going on.

King III se moer it would seem.

Would be interesting to see what the required minimum qualifications are for this job, apart from being connected to the brother and befriended to whoever.
Let’s hear it from that rugby guru from the Cape flats then, The Hon. Tony Ehrenreich.

One one person qualified for this job in the whole Drakenstein valley, Peter de Villiers, with Errol as assistent and Herman Baily as manager (ex Paarl mayor).

The following article appears on Joffe’s website sportsfire.co.za under the title

    SA Rugby Smoking Guns.

“On 14 August 2014 – a case of alleged corruption is opened with the SAPS in Paarl:

    Complainant: Mr AK Warnick

    Suspect: Mr I Pekeur

    The description of the complaint:

“The complainant received an email stating that there are several referees that have been involved in match fixing. Apparently, suspect threatened them by abusing his position as rugby club president to fix matches otherwise they won’t get to referee matches in the future which means they won’t receive any match or travelling allowances.”

    Docket transferred to Wellington SAPS.

Rugby is not so “well” in Wellington and again, SA Rugby (SARU) are ducking and diving.

The former president of the Boland Rugby Union, Francois Davids and the current president, Ivan Pekeur were very close friends up until a couple years ago.

Davids, a former Bok selector, got voted onto the SA Rugby (SARU) executive council in April this year and had to stand down as Boland president.

Pekeur took over as Boland Rugby Union president in June, despite the efforts of Davids to get his new close ally, Bertram Vraagom into the job.

Insiders claim Pekeur is trying to clean up Boland rugby and the match fixing allegations is a “Davids initiated smear campaign” to get him out and Vraagom in at the next Boland elections in February next year.

Boland rugby would seem to be a family affair as Abe Davids was appointed as coach of the senior team last year without the correct qualifications.

It was stated that he was the only coach in the area with an IRB 3 qualification, when in fact he didn’t have it and SARU did their best to cover it up, ten months later.

“He completed the course but his coaching diary is waiting to be assessed before he will receive his L3 IRB certificate.” – SARU

The Boland academy has raised further suspicions of self gain.

It’s alleged that most of the 24 boys in the academy are staying in properties owned by Francois Davids.

Lotto money is being used to fund the SARU academies.

When asked for comment, a touchy SARU GM of Corporate Affairs, Andy Colquhoun replied:

“Despite the opinion of colleagues I have continued to supply you with information and responses to your questions in the belief that, as there is no “smoking gun”, you would come to the point where you would have to report that. But you have worn me down and they have been proved correct: I am wasting my time and you’ll be wasting your time to email me in the future.”

The head of the Boland rugby academy, Barry McDonald failed to respond despite a number of emails and calls.

Davids has bought five properties in the area since the beginning of 2012.

    And it doesn’t stop there.

There’s a company called Wynland Spelersfonds, which so happens to operate out of the Boland rugby offices.

Directors of the company include Francois Davids, Athrop Peterson and former SARU CEO, Riaan Oberholzer.

Is this not a flouting of the SARU Constitution and the Boland Constitution which forbids them from having a vested shareholding in a company doing business with the Boland Rugby Union?

SARU president, Oregan Hoskins emailed me from Argentina last week to say he’ll be back on Saturday and will get onto the Boland thing immediately.

    Not a word since.

When will SARU and its employees realise they are part of a public organisation and are accountable to the entire rugby community in South Africa?

They have to provide transparency and full disclosure – it is their obligation constitutionally.

SARU has some serious issues to deal with and it doesn’t help matters that their CEO, Jurie Roux is under investigation for allegedly misappropriating R35 million while at Stellenbosch University.

Roux’s good friend and business partner in a player agency, Chris de Beer was dismissed by the University in 2012 based on his non-compliance to the accepted financial policies and processes of the University.

If Roux was still at the University, sources say he would have also been dismissed with immediate effect.

Instead, he is given a five year contract extension as SARU CEO.

It makes no sense at all.

Hoskins also broke a promise and confidentiality clause by givng Roux a copy of the KPMG forsensic report which implicates the CEO in alleged fraud while he was chairperson of the Maties rugby club and a senior director of finance and asset management at Stellenbosch University.

So, don’t expect much to change in SA rugby – just more smoking guns and mirrors under a cloud of secrecy.

I won’t be wasting my time to email them in the future.”

Also Jerome Paarwater en Hennie Shields.
Pity about Thinus not being able to be involved.
But Chester has his break now, back to his roots. He seems willing, able and available.

What happened to Rudi Joubert? One of the best coaches around.

  • 16

If the above is half true, then SA Rugby has greater governance issues than the ANCYL and EFF put together.

It’s a fark up of note.

  • 17

    @ Pietman:
Isnt he at one of the varsity cup teams?

  • 18

    15 @ Pietman:
    Isn’t Rudi now at Pukke?

  • 19

    @ Scrumdown:
@ 12 Let’s wait for TE en VetFrans to investigate and report….this is right up the alley of those “two watchdogs of morality”.

  • 20

    18 @ Scrumdown:
See he’s not there. So will dig a bit and try to find out.

He was great with WC 1995 Bok squad and also later the Falcons.
There is another ex SWD coach down there, his name escapes me now, a clinical psycologist….

    @ Scrumdown:
What is going on in the Boland, wasn’t there another article a few weeks ago about boys that went to the Boland cricket academy that have to live inside the change rooms because there is no money for accommodation?

Boland had its fair share of troubles the last 5 years or so with Fidentia, Arthur Brown, the King brothers and some other skelms, they don’t need this now.

    23 @ MacroBok:
Don’t know about the cricket lads, but it would appear that the gray train is heading full steam ahead into the sea?

  • 26

Anyway, I will be down in that valley over the next 10 days or so, SARS and the bank are waiting on me in CJ for my annual little “chat” with them, nursing my overdraught and other jolly things…. Worry
Hopefully I will get round to the Corner Bar in Main Rd afterwards and have a sip of papsak with Ashley, and catch up on all the Boland skindernuus.

  • 27

    24 @ Pietman:
Boland won the CC 1st div only 3 seasons ago (2011) beating the Kings 43 – 12 in the final.

Loffie Eloff was still coach then if my memory is correct.

    WTF is going on now?

  • 28

    @ Pietman:
….first the draft and THEN the draught….I guess.

If I knew you were going to be in the Karoo for the school holidays I’d head down to CAO and buy you a cold one in Blikkes!

    28 @ Pietman:
Sort out the “over”draft over a draught or two?
