Glasgow WarriorsGlasgow Warriors maintained their 100% winning start to the season with a 33-13 win over Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade on Saturday afternoon.

Four tries from Alex Dunbar, Josh Strauss, Tommy Seymour and Tim Swinson mean the Warriors return to Scotstoun with the bonus point.

Glasgow’s other points came from the boots of Duncan Weir and Stuart Hogg.

The Warriors had to play most of the second-half with fourteen players after Tyrone Holmes received a controversial red card for stamping.

Glasgow took an early lead after moving the ball inside from the lineout before Dunbar found a gap in the Dragons defence to score the opening try of the game with Weir converting.

The Warriors extended their lead after 18 minutes through the boot of Weir before the Dragons got onto the scoreboard five minutes later with a penalty of their own through O’Brien.

Nikola Matawalu was unlucky not to score when he attempted to kick and chase down the line before being tackled late by Toby Faletau but the officials allowed play to continue.

The Warriors did get the chance to extend their lead a few minutes later after being awarded a penalty on the halfway line which Stuart Hogg converted.

The second half started in controversial fashion as Tyrone Holmes was sent off for stamping after being reviewed by the TMO.

The hosts had a couple of chances to close the gap, and after missing the first penalty, O’Brien scored with the second attempt.

Glasgow restored their 10-point cushion as Weir scored another penalty and after moving through the phases, the Warriors scored their second try of the game through Strauss with Weir adding the extras again.

The Dragons responded well and scored when Rees broke through the defence to go over and O’Brien converted to leave the hosts within 10, but any momentum built up by the home side was vanquished when Seymour went over in the corner to go three scores in front with 10 minutes to play.

Glasgow sealed the win and added a bonus point following a driving maul that saw Swinson go over, capping off a second win in Wales in six days and their third victory of the season.

After the match, Alex Dunbar said: “Losing Tyrone to a red card immediately after the interval was a big and disappointing blow.

“But we had talked in the build-up how important our character as a squad is and we were determined to put down a marker at a difficult venue.

“We did just that and it was that sheer character that got us through. We have had three great results without playing that well – and now we have to focus on keeping up the momentum.”

The Tyrone Holmes stamp can be seen in the sequence starting around 50 seconds into the clip, the Dragons player was annoyingly holding onto him away from the ball but don’t see the card being ‘controversial’ looked clear and quite stupid thing to do right in front of the touch judge, can’t see him getting off without further sanction:

Josh McStrauss to sing Flower Of Scotland at St James Park for the RWC pool match v SA???

    Delighted

  • 3

    @ Scrumdown:
Unless they decide that God save the Queen is the song they prefer to sing in future 😉

  • 4

    4 @ nortierd:
English parliament should ban the singing of Flower of Scotland.

Sweaty Socks STILL have an ENGLISH Queen sitting on their throne!

Spineless gits should grovel on bended knee in abject submission and accept any Royal or parliamentary decree seeing that they chose to stay in the Union!!!!!

In fact, let’s ban the kilt and haggis as well while we’re busy!

    Happy-Grin

All tongue in cheek and just sh1t stirring of course! Tounge-Out

Anybody who can walk through the thistles in a kilt, and eat haggis, has my respect…… Bloody tough lot that 😀

Talking of Scotland, I’m trying to work out how I can sit and watch the Ryder Cup from start to finish and still get some work done, prevent the missus from getting pissed off AND fit in my game at Silver Lakes.

    Could be a tall order!

After seeing Fowler I’m already rooting for Europe.
That USA cut into his hair really puts me off

    7 @ nortierd:
    ALWAYS root for Europe.

American boorish behaviour doesn’t endear them to many.

Got to love Poulter’s attitude and application.

Typical English yobbo type, but can walk the talk most of the time.

Europe may be hoping for some wind. (And not just out of Keegan Bradley’s motor mouth!)

The top 9 players from the European tour’s Race to Dubai are in the European team, so they are flipping strong.

    Can’t wait.

The Ryder Cup is going to be big for Glen Eagles, it is such a beautiful area hope they show you some aerial views of the scenery. Bro in law stays in small town nearest and its not all been good as they have and will have quite a bit of disruption but with very little reward as the arrangements for getting folk in an out of the golf will mean them bypassing the village so it doesn’t seem like it will be getting the benefit of having the crowds spend their money there but will have had to put up with the disruption.

  • 17

    @ nortierd:
Never mind the Golf what do you think of the Red card? Not sure what the usual length of ban would be for this (if there is one) bearing in mind he got sent off for it and missed almost a whole half of a match as a result if that makes sense.

    17 @ Bullscot:
I’ve stamped, and been stamped on a rugby field, and that was no stamp.
I sometimes wonder about the ease with which cards are bandied about.
I doubt I would have lasted 5 minutes with these rules, probably would have gotten my 1st warning in the change room and my first card in the tunnel 😀

    18 @ nortierd:
Didn’t see the game live so watched the clip with the sound off, my first thoughts seeing it like that in slow mo was it was a stupid stamp especially considering how the laws are policed these days. Then turned the sound on and was surprised to hear the commentators saying “it was no stamp” so agreeing with your take on it. The other Warrior fans were saying that it looked far worse in slow mo than in real time at full speed, but I only seen the slow mo replay version of it.
Gosh and there I had this picture in my mind painted of you as being an angel. Pondering

Can remember from many koshuis games against your lot that there were a lot of vuilgat players and nasty windgat supporters along with them, far too much machismo – used to think if these are the people that are meant to be enforcing our laws we are doomed Afraid

    @ Bullscot:
    He he
Those days, the only legal way you could hit a cop was on the rugby field….off the field it would have been suicide 😉
Boy, those games against the Elsiesrivier and some Cape Flats side bordered on war.
The worst team to play in the 80’s was the warders of Robben Island….hard bastards, the field was sand with prices of brick in between. Even if you get sent off, there was nowhere to go, you had to wait for the ferry 😆
    Fun times
