Doug Hopwood played 8th man for Villagers,WP and Boks
during period I played 3d team.
Best all round player I ever came accross.
Was selected as captain of Boks, but appointment withdrawn
for political reasons which I will not expand.on.
Era in club of Dave Stewart,John Gainsford Lionel Wilson and Tommy Gentles..
Obviously still hero worshipped by me, some 40 years
after he died at a relatively young age.In his 30,s I think.
And for a 75 year old cynic to praise him as I have is
no light matter.
Regards all and good night. Rye
PS have been saying for some weeks that the entire front row
of that “no name’ Golden Lions team should be Boks.
How grand was their hooker?

224 Hi pal.Could have been 10 years ago.I grow confused.Swear
by all myother statements.Always had the idea that he died
to young for his age.
Cheers and Kind regards Rye
@ ryecatcher:
“How grand was their hooker?”
MoM grand. That’s how, mr Rye
I like that guy. Build like a Toyota Tuff bakkie.
I remember a game in the SR in which he ran from the 10m line of the opposition only to be tackled 1.5 metres from the try line. I became a fan of him that night.
A rugby player’s rugby player. That’s him.
Remind me of Domkrag.
Regards.
I must say that I was actually very disappointed in JdJ not giving credit to the Lions in his after-match speech. He didn’t mention them at all.
Hopefully AC/Gert (of sy pa) will guide him to give credit to your victors when you are on the losing side.
@ Nama:
Cheers pal.Stay well.Cinderellatime
@ ryecatcher:
Rye, we need to talk one day, about all those legends Tommy Gentles, Dennis and Stephen Fry etc…but these RT youngsters might get bored, what do they know about that, after all
Doubt if any of them ever had the opportunity to stand in front of the old South stand and watch WP play. I smoked my first Cavalla there, age 6, picked up granddad’s butts while he was transfixed on the match sipped from his almost empty Kommando brandy halfjack too. That was Newlands in the old days…

8 PENNNIES FOR A PACKET OF 20.

@ ryecatcher: Cavalla Kings. 😀 When I was at school, we used to by them in 10’s. I think they cost about 10 cents/pack back then, on Wynberg station or at Monte’s Cafe Main Road Diep River. Thanks for the memories Rye. Regards
@ Pietman: Don’t remember Komando Piet but Cavalla fags I certainly do. When I was 8 I smoked my first Gold Dollar. Was violently ill. So you beat me by two years. But the brandy I left for later. After my Old Brown and Tassies. 😆
@ ryecatcher: Yes Rye. We can all be forgiven for a little memory lapse every now and then. I’m on the wrong end of a teasing around the office every day, until I mention bonus or something equally counter-active.
Doug H died in 2002 according to Google. Personally, I can’t remember seeing him play. That doesn’t mean I didn’t. Lionel Wilson was my hero when I was about 8. So it’s a distinct possibility that I did see him turn out for Villagers or WP at that young age. I grew up a few hunderd metres from both Villagers and Newlands. Probably equidistant from the two. And was at Newlands every saturday afternoon for years. Was obviously a Villagers supporter. Good squash club these days.
@ Pietman: looked it up Piet. An educational centre. Not a dorpie. As most oriental cities are inclined not to be. I take it you could watch the rugga from Pete’s Place?
@ Tassies:
283 Watched Tom van Vollenhoven score 3 tries against B & I Lions
from south stand .Cried hot tears and teased mercilessly when we lost 1.st test. I don,t think that Jack vd Schyff ever played again. But Quinns Bakery ad painted on wall featured in all photographs of “that”kick 2nd Test.Newlands..Saved money for ticket by doing “bob a job”
for 3 weeks.Train fare return from Cape Town + ticket to game for 2nd test..
Did you ever eat mosbolleties and warm peanuts in a brown
paper packet.
Tried to go most Saturdays especially when my heroes
were playing.
When WP played often sat on the wooden seats of railway stand.
If Province scored there was always a drumming of feet
on wooden seats. And as team walked back to receive
kick off (always placed) the drumming would be encored.Awesome.
Played cricket (badly) for Tech. The Vineyard
only a beer and a half distance from Newlands.
Regards.Rye.
PS I used to do the scrap book thing, starting with 1951/52
tour to UK (And France)
We lost 1 game.11-9 London Counties.
@ ryecatcher: Hi Rye. You were indeed to the game born. No I only collected coke bottles under the stands(for the 3c offered for returns) at the cricket to pay for my next game’s tickets. Can’t remember how I paid for my rugby tickets. Maybe they were free gratis for young scholars. We used to always sit on the hard concrete slabs/seats at the side of the pitch, almost always on the Grand Stand side. Was a school thing. Tiny Naude(Hammies) was another hero, a lock and ‘place-kicked’ for goal with his toe, ala John Eales. You’ll remember him I’m sure. Ditto HO. I remember the ‘big’ games between Maties, Ikies, Villagers and sometimes Police, from where most of the Province players were drawn. The rest were also-rans. Strand-Somerset West, Union, Gardens etc. Piet will remember.
@ Tassies:
286 Hi Pal from memory Grand Challenge was
Villagers
Hammies
Union
Gardens
Northerns
UCT
Stellenbosch
vd.Stel
Somerset WEst
And I can never remember 10th team.
Used to listen to results on crystal set radio by a guy
called C.K.Friedlander
10th team was Paarl.
King regards.Lets keep the recent history alive.IE Fisticuffs
after Springbok trials between Jan Bull (Pickard to the youngsters)
and Salty du Randt.
@ ryecatcher: you have a much better memory than you’re prepared to admit Rye. Certainly better than mine. I do recall the Bobbies being in there somewhere. Police used to wear a blue and yellow gold jersey. Very occasionally they’d even produce a WP player. But I wont be able to remember any names. Remember the B field at Newlands. The site of the current Sport Science Institute.
When I was at junior school our student coach was one Ian McCallum. He was later to play full-back for the Springboks against arguably the best rugby team of all time. Ian played in the Loftus Test in front of 60000 people +, where the Boks were handed a hiding(4 tries to nil) and Ian’s brother Roy was on the bench, sitting alongside a young Moaner Van Heerden. A very young Morne Dup was playing open side flank. Dugald Macdonald(he who likes to paddle a canoe across the Atlantic) was the No 8. The year? 1974. In this company there should be no need to mention who the opposing captain was I reckon.
and John Williams(our ex Springbok coach) and Kevin de Klerk(no introduction necessary) were our locks. On paper we looked okay. On the park we got nailed. Hannes Marais was a poor Bok captain and the selectors were even worse. Gerrie Sonnekus(a forward) was selected to play scrum half in the follow-up Test. Yes, that actually happened.
that follow up Test in Port Elizabeth was a battle royal of note, again won convincingly by the Lions. This was reputed to be one of the most violent games of rugby in history. It was that famous 99 call by WillieJohn. It was even worse than the Dalton incident at the 95 RWC against Canada, which looked pretty bad on my screen. All 30 players were involved I think. Certainly all the Lions, who responded to the call.
288 @ Tassies:
Wasn’t Johan Oosthuizen a cop?
So, JPP has been drafted into the Bok squad in place of Ruan Pienaar.
Why has he not been available up to now? Will he play at 13?
Nama wrote:
Yes, he was their big star.
Captain (detective) Johan Oosthuizen… fast as the wind sideburns and all.
Skattie and Cliffie Etsebetht also played for Police.
They always won the fights.
@ robzim: yes exactly Rob. I remember the sideburns well. Typically fashionable for the period amongst our polisiemanne. 😉
@ Nama: an exceptionally odd replacement. Is Vic going to play scrumhalf I wonder?
Can’t believe everyone asking where Armand vd Merwe comes from.
Played Varsity Cup for Pukke.
I said at the time the Lions need to contract this guy, and FOR ONCE they flipping listened.
Now I reiterate once again, GLRU PLEASE contract Luther Obi.
Nick Mallet describes vd Merwe as being like “an angry Warthog.” How apt is that description?
@ Scrumdown:
This year Akker also played Super Rugby for the Lions, & was very impressive on the few occasions he received an opportunity to play.
@ MacroBok:
Hi Pal.
Apologies for mistaken identity the other day.
@ ryecatcher:
No problem, whatever happened, forgiven an no doubt forgotten.
