South AfricaDamian de Allende will make his Springbok debut next to returning national captain Jean de Villiers when South Africa open their Castle Lager Rugby Championship campaign against Argentina at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday.

Kick-Off is at 17:00 SA Time.

De Villiers is one of three returning Springboks who played no part in the Castle Lager Incoming Series because of injury. The others are Frans Malherbe and Eben Etzebeth, who have both been selected on the bench.

SA Rugby

Junior Springbok captain Handré Pollard will get his second Test cap when he lines up between the experienced De Villiers and Ruan Pienaar, while Willem Alberts and Tendai Mtawarira are also back after missing the Scotland Test because of injuries.

At lock, Lood de Jager will have to fill the considerable boots of the injured Victor Matfield, but he’ll have the experienced Bakkies Botha next to him.

“It’s great to welcome back Jean, Willem, ‘Beast’, Eben and Frans, but I’m also very excited to see what Damian can do after he missed out on making his debut in June because of an injury,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“Jean and Damian have played together before, albeit not this way around. But Damian has experience of playing outside centre from his junior days and he got his break at inside centre when he had to step up in Jean’s place.”

“Handré also deserved another opportunity and it will be good to see how he combines with Jean and Damian.”

“Lood has improved a lot over the last couple of months and although it’s a big ask for him to fill the void left by Victor, I know he has the goods to deliver. He will be well-supported by Duane Vermeulen in the line-outs though.”

Meyer moved Jan Serfontein, who had a very good series in June, to the bench as injury cover, with De Villiers and De Allende both returning from injuries, while Morne Steyn will provide back-up at flyhalf and fullback.

“Jan was one of our best players in June, but Jean is our captain and was always going to return once he was fit again,” said Meyer.

“We’re up against a formidable opponent on Saturday and we can’t take any chances or make experiments. The players know they have to be switched on mentally and physically, otherwise it could become a long afternoon at Loftus.”

Pat Lambie will return to Durban on Wednesday to play for the Cell C Sharks in the Absa Currie Cup on Friday evening, when they host the Steval Pumas.

Meyer said: “Pat missed four months of Vodacom Super Rugby and although he made his return towards the end of the competition, it was felt that he could do with game time this weekend before we leave for Argentina and we’d like to thank the Sharks for agreeing to give him a run.”

Not a bad Bok side, good luck Damian

  • 2

No Juan Smith? What is the point of bringing him back then?

  • 3

    @ nortierd:
Just a question, i see you and i saw the team on News24 and Bulls official websites. Is the official website not always first? And would that not be a better place to get Springbok announcements first?

You might know , who is writing The Official sites articles, do they have Journalists working for them?

Yeah, good luck to Damian, may it be the beginning of a long career in the Green and Gold.

I would have switched him and Jean around but maybe it’s better to have the captain closer to the action for now.

Great to see Pollard at 10 too….

    @ superBul:
I look in on SARU’s official site every now and again, but by then the news has already broke on News24

  • 6

Really pleased for Damian. He deserves it!

  • 7

Formidable team. glad Coetzee is also in the squad… congrats damien!

  • 8

Looks like a side to give the Argies 50 points IMO.

HOWEVER, one wonders how much ball the SA captain is going to be giving to de Allende on debut.

Not the most prolific offloader of the ball is the SA captain.

  • 9

Samoa leading 14-13 against our Mamma’s.
At least, if we have 13, it means we have actually scored a try, what a wonder

  • 10

Congratulations to Damian… well deserved and great to see Heyneke put faith in him…

Was having a “discussion” with some non-wp supporters mid-SR saying I thought he had the form that should see him getting a look-in in the Bok-15 at centre… and definitely in the squad… of course they said i was biased and also said he would only get a chance… maybe… at wing… but was too slow for wing… and he did not have the skills for centre…
good to see the coach thinks otherwise… most in-form 12 in SA during SR… imo…

And congrats to the rest of the team as well…!

Tough on Jan after his fantastic in-coming tour form… but he’ll have plenty of opportunities in future… and a long career awaits him…

    4 @ robzim:

yeah rob.. i agree with you re switching them… but just really pleased for damian to get a bok start…

  • 12

Congrats to Damian, really pleased he has finally come of age. A good team, barring perhaps Ruan, but S/H is an on going problem, and he is probably the best we have at the moment. Go Boks.

  • 13

Another player selected out of position…De Allende. When is HM going to stop with that? We saw how Taute, JJ Engelbrecht, JdV (at first) and recently, JPP struggled with their defence in that channel. Now he puts De Allende their in his debut test.

Understand me please. I’m chuffed that De Allende is making his debut but he was the best SA no 12 in the SR, not the best 13. There is no guarantee that he will be able to do as well at 13. He may get away with it against the Argies in the 1st two weeks of the RC but I’m not sure that he and Jean is our answer at centre in those positions. Switch them and there are possibilities but there is no way that HM will play two rookies (Pollard and De Allende) next to each other.

For Pollard, this is the big boys now, son. Let’s see if you are all that you are made out to be. Not so long ago it was someone called Fransie… then there was Lambie…then there was Goosen…

  • 14

    @ Nama:
JDv would be better suited for 13?

  • 15

That Boks selection will do the job against the Argies at Loftus, I’ll give it to HM! 😉
Will it do the job against the Wallabies?
They certainly has no chance vs the ABs with this selection home and away 🙁

  • 16

    @ MacroBok:
He is a better 12 than a 13. He was named Player of the Year last year playing at 12. But…he has played at 13 for HM since the latter became coach, except last year. De Allende has never played there afa I know.

So yes, between the two of them JdV will be better suited.

It’s the default choice for HM, so the comment shows lack of respect for the great coach!
    😉
    M. Styen’s not good enough to win vs the ABs and possibly vs the Wallabies (an unknown at this stage), Lambies’ not an option for HM when no need (yet) for someone to blame, so what was left?
    Goosen? 😉
    Boshoff? 🙁
    Coleman?? 😆
As for Pollard I am not convinced of his outright merit, he was lousy FH during the 2nd half of the Bulls’ SR campaign, speedy opposition did confuse him at times?

  • 18

    Happy with this team.

Only position of concern is 9.

His gonna box kick whole day to protect his 10.

  • 19

    17 @ Hondo:
“As for Pollard I am not convinced of his outright merit, he was lousy FH during the 2nd half of the Bulls’ SR campaign, speedy opposition did confuse him at times?”

Lucky for him he has the speediest scrumhalf available who will assist him to beat the speedy opposition. 🙄

    ‘He is a better 12 than a 13.’
    Really?
JdV was best at left wing but that was 10 years ago 😥
JW knew what, picking him at wing, at centre he impedes any potential backline’s move and he is too slow on defence at midfield now , his cover defence and presence brings some values to the table though

  • 21

    @ nortierd:

I beg the difference, Ruan is my man!
Are you already concerned about the Argies’ tests? 😆

  • 22

    Ruan Pienaar?

    WTF?

Now I know how Hondo’s English teacher felt.

    😆

  • 23

    @ Hondo:
“As for Pollard I am not convinced of his outright merit…”

So, you’re saying that Pollard is not a merit selection?

What is he then? A quota? 😉

You’re right. He was not that convincing for the Bulls.

  • 24

    Is there anyone else though?

  • 25

    @ Hondo:#20
We were just discussing the merit of JdV at 13 vs that of De Allende.

  • 26

  • 27

    @ Nama:

I doubt we will see Pollard start against the ABs and All Blacks.

For me the greatest shame is Goosen it’s a shame he’s about as tough a a soggy piñata.

  • 28

    @ Nama:
Morne will play the big teams… I think

  • 29

Off for my run we will chat about this later.

I’m especially keen to see what nonsense Hondo manages to sick up on the issue.

    😆

  • 30

Both Habana and Jdv to get to 100 test caps in Australasia, unless HM rests them to get it at home 😈
