Less is more – Jake White

It would seem like Jake White has been listening to and reading the opinion of bloggers on rugby sites. He certainly has a point when during an interview with a New Zealand radio station he mentioned that he also preferred the older versions of the Super Rugby competition.

The majority of the rugby viewing public feel the same way as White and would by no means complain if the tournament is reduced back to the Super 12 or even the Super 14 format.

Jake White is concerned Super Rugby is going down the wrong road as they expand the competition to eighteen teams from 2016’s season.

Japan and Singapore met the criteria required to successfully operate an outfit, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia Rugby (SANZAR) said.

But ahead of the decision – set to be in September or October – White’s come out to say he prefers the old format instead of the new conferences.

“I think that less is more, I think that you should play everybody in a competition to see how good you are,” the Springbok World Cup-winning coach told Radio Sport in New Zealand, highlighting that he enjoyed when all the competing teams played home and away games across the campaign.

“You want to play Kiwi and Aussie sides when you’re South African. We should have gone back to the old format, where you play everybody and the winner becomes the winner.”
