Cricket BallSri-Lanka and South Africa battle each other in the 2nd 5-Day Cricket Test at Colombo in Sri-Lanka from 24 to 28 July 2014. Play starts early for SA viewers, as Sri-Lanka is a few hours ahead of South Africa in the time zones, so it is daly from about 06:00 SA Time every day.

South Africa won the 1st Test and lead the Test Series by 1 / 0 after also taking the ODI Series by 2 – 1, their first ever ODI Series win in Sri-Lanka.

The score cards will be updated at regular intervals here on Rugby-Talk.

Sri-Lanka won the toss and elected to bat.

Sri-Lanka started Day 1 well and at the Close of play on Day 1 were on 305 / 5 after 86 Overs.

It was a slow Day initially on Day 2, both from bat and ball, but the Day started heating up after about 30 Overs done for the Day. Sri-Lanka were all out for 421 in their 1st Innings. South Africa started terribly in their 1st Innings, losing 2 wickets with just 13 on the board. South Africa ended with 98 /  after 52 Overs at Stumps, Day 2.

On Day 3 the South African wickets kept falling at regular intervals, SA reaching 234 / 7 after 111 Overs at Tea of Day 3 and then South Africa were eventually all out for 282 from 134.5 Overs, trailing by 139 rins at the Innings break.

Sri-Lanka started their 2nd Innings and at Stumps on Day 3 were 11 / 0 after 5 Overs.

On Day 4 Sri Lanka kept the pressure on and eventually declared at 229 / 8 after 53.4 Overs, leaving South Africa to chase 369 runs for a win. At Stumps, Day 4 South Africa was on 38 / 1 after 17 Overs, still 331 shy of a win with 9 wickets still in tact.

South Africa were in to bat the whole of Day 5, but there was no attempt to chase a win, it was block, block, block to save the Test! After 102.5 Overs bowled it was 148 / 8, which was then still 221 runs short of the win, with 2 wickets in hand. Rain delayed the Final Session of play on Day 5 for a while, but play resumed again.

South Africa managed to stand their ground, eecking out a DRAW, ending with 159 / 8 after 111 Overs. The result, or non-result, means South Africa moves up to TOP Test spot in the world Cricket Test rankings.

Sri-Lanka:
  • First Innings – 421 (121.4 Overs)
  • Second Innings – 229 / 8 Declared (53.4 Overs)
South Africa:
  • First Innings – 282 (134.5 Overs)
  • Second Innings – 159 / 8 (111 Overs)

    Lankans are pissed.

  • 122

    @ MacroBull:
They’ve done away with the 15 overs some time ago afa I know. Even on the last day you have to bowl a minimum of 90 overs. They’ll even extend the end of the day’s play by 30 minutes if the need arises.

  • 123

What a great sporting weekend. Gold for sevens – series win for Proteas – now no 1 in world rankings again and then to Mr Clarke on winning the Canadian Open… Mooi so SA…

  • 124

Well, one could look at it in 2 ways… either Sri Lanka did not have the killer instinct to bowl the Proteas out… or the Proteas showed true grit to stand to the end against the odds…

Its definitely minimum 15 overs in the last hour. it can be extended by 30 minutes, if overs was lost.

    @ grootblousmile:
We batted out a day and a bit in the last couple of years against Aus and India to save test matches as well. I’ll be more inclined to give our boys their dues.

Sri Lanka waited too long to declare, It was highly unlikely that south africa would go for the win even if the target was 300 unless we got away to the perfect start, being 150/0

  • 128

    @ MacroBull:
Does that overule the 90 overs per day rule? What if SA, with all their quickies, bowl only 65 overs up to the hour before the end of the day (13 overs per hour). Do they only then bowl the obligatory 15 overs in the last hour? That’s 10 overs gone for the batting team that chases a target on the last day.

  • 129

    126 @ Nama:
As South Africans of course we would like to credit our boys!

If you look at it from a Sri-Lankan perspective.. losing a Test Series at home, not managing to plant the death blows here towards the end… questions have to be asked.

The Proteas also have some nagging questions… and specifically regarding our bowlers, more specifically the question why we do not have sufficient spinners to utilize on the sub-continent where the pitches are tailor-made for spinners.

Our seam attack has always been good, and has again been the mainstay.

The other serious question mark still revolves around out batting openers and why they have been so unsuccessful?

  • 130

    @ MacroBull:
We forgot about the win when we started to bat in our 1st innings and lost 2 quick wickets.

  • 131

after that absolutely abysmal display by my sharks……
    things have improved.
    gold medal for the blitzies…
the boykie from umkomaas making 5 birdies on the back nine to squeeze past furyk……
and now big vern showing enormous temperament to see the proteas through.

all i need now is for the tahs to give those saders a serious lesson. 😈

Yep 15 overs in the last hour is vital to prevent batting teams taking their time to play down the overs.

I think Amla could face fines due to our slow over rate in this game to be honest.

  • 133

    @ grootblousmile:
Yes, our openers need to get more consistent. As long as people don’t punt for De Kock to open because of his success in ODI’s as an opener.

I’m not sure what we’re going to do wrt spinners. Maybe do what Kirsten wanted to do. Develop Duminy as the no. 1 spinner and play another quickie, preferably a left arm quickie. Faf and Elgar can also be uitilised to bowl some leggies if needs be.

Piedt is seen as our next big hope in the spinning department but we’ll have to see how he develops.

We were in defend mode since those quick wickets, If Mathews declared earlier we would have been in serious trouble, 111 overs was about our limit on this pitch.

  • 135

    @ Nama:

If you don’t like de Kock at 2 you will be horrified to hear that Domingo was considering opening with Parnell.

And I’m not talking about the bowling.

    😆

    @ MacroBull:
Law 16: Start of play; cessation of play. Play after an interval commences with the umpire’s call of “Play”, and at the end of a session by “Time”. The last hour of a match must contain at least 20 overs, being extended in time so as to include 20 overs if necessary.

    @ gunther:
You got to be kidding me! Disapproval

Was he going to take a leaf out of Jennings’ book when he opened with Hall?

  • 137

    @ Nama:

Personally I think that outside the sub continent Duminy is going to have to fill the all rounder role.

Parnell will come in for Tahir

However for the subcontinent we are going to need to find another spinner to help out .

Well they only bowled 19 overs today in the last hour to the umpires must be wrong.

“If necessary”, meaning if time/overs was lost

  • 139

    wow haha oops

  • 140

    @ gunther:
    I agree with that.

This is how I look at it. We have a trio of world class quickies. Between the 3 of them, I expect them to take 70-75% of the wickets in a test. That means 14-15 wickets shared by Steyn, Morkel and Vern. While Vern was not succesful in SL, we have to remember that Morkel did not take many wickets against Aus last time around. Look at these guys as a unit instead of individuals.

Out of the 40 SL wickets that fell in the series, the trio took 27, that is 67.5%. More or less what I would expect if you keep in mind that there were some run outs as well. .

Duminy and Tahir took 9 wickets between them. That’s 22.5%.

  • 141

    @ MacroBull:
There are provisions made for the reduction in overs in the last hour when there is an interruption in play. Why do you think Tahir was getting “cramps”? So, he saved us an over. No wonder the ‘Lankans was pissed off. Happy

  • 142

    @ Nama:
The last hour has to have a minimum of 15 overs or an hour long.

if tahir had been faking after an hour with inly 13 overs bowled they would still be allowed to bowl two more.

it is 15 overs minimum in test matches and 20 overs minimum in other first class matches.

  • 143

I thought we had to win both tests to reclaim the nr 1 spot?

  • 144

There must be a minimum of 15 overs in the last hour.

    You can bowl more.

  • 149

I think its fair to say that the Lankan keeper is my personal new ‘most irritating’ player. That’s probably being too nice though. Yussis his appealing was overboard.

I think Tahir has played his last test for the Proteas. Despite his heroics with the bat at the end there.

Duminy has to be the first choice spinner with Piedt coming in depending where they are playing.

  • 150

    Indeed.

Add that to his non catch off AB and you have an excellent target for a Steyn Bouncer.
