Cricket BallSri-Lanka and South Africa battle each other in the 1st 5-Day Cricket Test at Galle International Stadium in Sri-Lanka from 16 to 20 July 2014. Play starts early for SA viewers, as Sri-Lanka is a few hours ahead of South Africa in the time zones, so it is daly from about 06:00 SA Time every day.

South Africa have just won the ODI Series by 2 – 1, their first ever in Sri-Lanka.

The score cards will be updated at regular intervals here on Rugby-Talk.

South Africa won the toss and elected to bat first.

South Africa started well on Day 1 and then slightly lost their way towards the end of Day 1. At Stumps on Day 1, South Africa were 268 / 5, after 91 overs. On Day 2 South Africa continued their strong form and declared with 9 wickets down on 455 / 9 after 166.2 overs, leaving Sri-Lanka to field 12 uncomfortable overs before the close of play on Day 2 and with Sri-Lanka ending on 30 / 0 (12 Overs).

On Day 3 Sri-Lanka was steadily losing wickets and after 60 Overs bowled in the Sri-Lankan 1st Innings they were 165 / 4 (60 Overs). At close of play on Day 3 they were reeling at 283 / 9 after 100 Overs.

On Day 4 the Sri-Lankans were all out for 292 after 104.5 Overs and South Africa in their 2nd Innings declared at 206 / 6 (50.2 Overs). The Sri-Lankan 2nd Innings is underway, a target of 370 set.

At Stumps, Day 4, Sri-Lanka was 110 / 1 (32 Overs), 260 runs needed to win the game. One now wonders whether the South Adrican captain, Hashim Amla, declared the South African 2nd Innings too early!

On Day 5 the South African bowling attack and specifically the pace attack, obliterated the Sri-Lankans.

South Africa won the Test comfortably, by 153 runs.

    @ nortierd:
    Ekt gesien. Dankie.

59 @ Nama:JP, like Hersch is/was so erratic, that you tear your hair out sometimes as you know that they have the talent and ability. In JP’s case, he has that added arrow in his armoury of being able to part time spin. Great fielder, great batsman (when he’s scoring), and a more than competent back-up spinner.

If he could just be a bit more consistent (I personally think its a patience issue), he could well go down in history as another of SA’s all-round greats. He has a way to go yet, though. But a great knock today, well done him.

  • 63

Englad busy routing the Indians – India 134/6 just before tea on day1

    @ Just For Kicks:
JP has potential. my biggest fruatration is when he looks comfortable and strikes the ball beautifully. .. But gets himself out.

  • 65

at least he usually performs when I have the least faith in him 😀

  • 66

64 @ MacroBull:Absolutely, my point entirely. Just like Herschelle Gibbs, was was so frustrating to watch. He has a brilliant eye, has the talent, but just seems to lack something upstairs. Unlike Gibbs, I don’t think he thinks he’s bigger than the game, and for that I am hopeful that he will sort out his patience issue.

  • 67

    @ Just For Kicks:
    @ MacroBull:
I hear what you guys are saying about JP getting out cheaply sometimes but you have to keep in mind that while JP had been in the national setup for about 8 years or so, he has only played 25 test matches. Compare that to AB (92 tests) who he has been playing with and against since they were school boys.

4 hundreds and 5 fifties in 39 innings’ mean that he contributes 50 or more in every 4th innings that he plays. That’s about par for the course for a good batsman at international level. Your very good batsman will reach that target every 2nd/3rd innings or so.

    AB: 19 x 100; 35 x 50 in 154 innings
    Amla: 21 x 100; 27 x 50 in 132 innings
    Kallis: 45 x 100; 58 x 50 in 280 innings

It would be interesting to see what the record of the above mentioned three was after 25 test matches.

  • 68

I think JP has turned the corner he’s scored two good tons in his last couple of tests and has a clearly defined role in the team.

I think he’s going to go on and score lots of runs for the Proteas.

  • 69

    @ gunther:
I hope so. Two centuries in his last 5 innings.

Don’t understand why he bats at 7 though. For my money, that is where De Kock should bat.

  • 70

    @ Nama:
    Jp averages 34.7

He scored a good 100 now and 1 vs Aus… before that he got a 100 in a dead rubber vs NZ and before that the brilliant 166.

34.7 is well bellow average compared to his team mates.

And this is a new era where we are competing for dominance in test cricket, so id hope there is even stronger competition than 5 or 10 years ago.

JP is fine in the team for his bowling.

  • 71

…but hopefully he turned a new lead now. hope so

  • 72

    @ Nama:

I’m not sure either however he is excellent at batting with the tail much like Gilchrist was so maybe that’s it?

  • 73

    Evening all.

Just a flying visit to see what’s happening.

Been off air for a few days with modem trouble etc.

Cricket looks like it’ll end in a draw?

  • 74

    @ MacroBull:
    After 40 innings:
    Kallis: 1 328 runs @ 36.88 (3 x 100; 7 x 50)
    Amla: 1 289 runs @ 33.92 (3 x 100; 6 x 50)
    AB: 1 527 runs @ 39.15 (3 x 100; 10 x 50)

    JP after 39 innings: 1 211 runs @ 37. 84 (4 x 100; 5 x 50)

So, he is not hat far off at a similar stage of their careers. Only AB has scored at a better average but JP has scored more 100’s than all of them.

PS: Your average for JP does not include his undefeated 100 that he scored today.

  • 80

It’s going to have to be a hell of a bowling display to get the 20 wickets needed for the win.

  • 81

    @ Nama:
Ab, Amla and Kallis all batted up front though AB also opened a few times.

Our top order has been so solid in the last few years that JP rarely comes in in a crisis situation and usually comes in when we needed him to close a game for us. And its not that he gets out it is the way he gets out. If he looks back at his career he will know how many times he threw away his wicket.

His role in the team now is basically to bat with the tail and a spin bowler…

  • 82

… and to be honest. There is no problem with that.

  • 83

    4th wicket falls
    136/4

  • 85

Great ball from Duminy to get the wicket, he’s really getting some nice turn

  • 86

Apparently some rain being predicted… the third session here will determine if we can win the test.

  • 87

    Another wicket!

    Sri-Lanka 190 / 5 after 71.1 Overs

  • 88

Now if the Blomme could take one more wicket in the remaining 9 overs before the new ball is due, it would be great…

Then with the new ball they must wrap up the Sri-Lankan tail!

Looks good so far, doesn’t seem like Sri Lanka is interested in chasing the score
