Gurthrö Steenkamp

Gurthrö Steenkamp

South AfricaSouth Africa’s Player of the Year in 2010, Gurthrö Steenkamp, will make his 50th Test appearance for the Springboks when they take on Wales at Growthpoint Kings Park in Durban on Saturday (kick-off 17:00 SA Time, 15:00 GMT).

Steenkamp has been included in the starting line-up for the first Welsh Test in one of six changes to the match-day squad from the team which comprehensively beat the World XV last weekend in Cape Town, four of which are positional shifts.

Cornal Hendricks, who shone for the Springboks last weekend at DHL Newlands, will make his Test debut on Saturday, while his provincial team mate from the Toyota Free State Cheetahs, the uncapped Lood de Jager, has been selected on the bench.

The two changes in the backline are at inside centre, where Jan Serfontein will earn his first Test start for South Africa, and scrumhalf, where Fourie du Preez will start with Ruan Pienaar on the bench alongside Tendai Mtawarira, who has swapped places with Steenkamp.

The 32-year-old Steenkamp, who made his international debut on 27 November 2004 against Scotland in Edinburgh, will become the 29th Springbok to reach 50 Test caps. He will also become the sixth prop to achieve this feat behind Os du Randt, CJ van der Linde, Ollie le Roux, Jannie du Plessis and Mtawarira.

“This is a wonderful achievement for Gurthrö and I’m very proud of him,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer.

“He has been playing Test rugby for a decade and is vastly experienced at all levels of the game. Gurthrö always gives everything he has for the Springbok jersey and it’s always good to see commitment and hard work pay off.”

Meyer was also very happy for Hendricks and De Jager, who have been two of the Toyota Cheetahs’ stars this season.

“To make one’s Test debut is a proud moment in any player’s career. Cornal and Lood fully deserve to be in the squad this weekend and I know they will do well,” said Meyer.

“Cornal performed exceptionally well in his first start for South Africa against the World XV last weekend and really made the most of his opportunity.”

“Lood has everything expected from a modern lock – not only is he big and powerful, but he likes the physical stuff and is very skilful as well.”

“I also planned on giving Jan an opportunity this month. He was first selected when he was 20 last year and it’s always been our plan to groom him for a long Springbok career. He’s been playing well for the Vodacom Bulls lately and his first start for the Springboks is well-deserved after making nine appearances from the bench in 2013.”

“Jan and JP Pietersen will face a very experienced midfield combination on Saturday, but they have played against the best in Vodacom Super Rugby and know what is expected of them.”

Meyer said he is expecting a stern challenge from Wales on Saturday.

“They started their tour well with a good win in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday evening and they are always fired up and ready,” said the Springbok coach.

“Wales have an experienced coaching team and they were the Six Nations champions in 2012 and 2013, as well as the back-bone of the British & Irish Lions team which beat Australia last year, so this will be a massive challenge in our first Test of the season.”

“Although we got our season off to a good start against the World XV last weekend, there were a few areas of the game we were not satisfied with and which we worked hard on this week. We will have to be at our best on Saturday and we want to make our supporters proud.”

Victor Matfield, who will captain the Springboks for the 18th time in a Test, will equal John Smit’s South African record of 111 Tests in the Green and Gold.

Four players who are part of the squad were not considered for selection because of illness and injury. They are Juan de Jongh (chest infection), Siya Kolisi (flu), Oupa Mohoje (flu) and Marnitz Boshoff (ankle).

  • Cornal Hendricks is the only new Springbok in the starting team. He will be Springbok No. 855. If he goes on, Lood de Jager will become Springbok No. 856.
  • Thirteen of the players were involved in the last Test in 2013 (against France). JP Pietersen played on the wing while Gurthro Steenkamp and Bakkies went on as substitutes. Coenie Oosthuizen played tighthead prop while Ruan Pienaar started at scrumhalf.
  • The referee is Romain Poite of France. This will be his fourth Test involving South Africa. The Springboks have won two and lost one of these encounters. His last game was the Test against New Zealand on 14 September, 2013 at Eden Park in Auckland, when the Boks lost by 29-15 in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship.

And if memory serves me correctly that’s the day the (Late) Minister of Sport Steve (“Mr-fixit”) Tshwete barged into the Springbok dressing room at the 11th-hour and told an astonished Mallett & Co that that would be the last time EVER that an all-white Springbok team would take the field…and demanded that Breyton Paulse be included IMMEDIATELY in the side?

    Censored

    Sick phew
at least there’s no chance that our current esteemed Minister of Sport would do anything like that!! Afraid

  • 34

    33 @ Ashley:
No, even he would realize that Breyton Paulse is a bit old now!

No way, after Breitie trimmed his Afro he picked up in France, his weight reduced by 25kg’s , so even the minister of sport will realize he is to small for those Welsh backs.

  • 39

I wonder if this is not the oldest Springbok team ever. Does anyone know?

  • 40

    Hehehe

Outta here, more work calls…cheers all…back later.

A few threads ago everyone on this blog thought Beast was looking tired and needed a break.

Now he gets a break and the person replacing him is the weak link.
The one thing about HM which is a given is that he doesn’t give test caps away to anyone.

  • 44

    43 @ Tuff Gong:
Look, it is a given that Beast, Bissie, Doc Jannie & Alberts are jaded… but the Bokke still needs to win the Tests against Wales who are up for it this June.

    What would I have done??

I would probably have played Coenie Oosthuizen at Loosehead prop, Bissie at hooker (with Brits getting a full 40 minutes in the 2nd half), not Jannie du Plessis at all but one of the other leading SA tighthead props… with 2 upcoming younger props on the bench.

I would have started with Schalk Burger at Blindside flank and Marcell Coetzee on the bench, giving Willem Alberts (who I still rate) a welcome break for 2 weeks.

In that way one does not underestimate Wales and respects them sufficiently enough to still win.

  • 45

Well, HM has selected his team. I don’t see how any of the “newcomers” make the team better or weaker.

Janneman will bash it up and not pass (like Fransie) and Shrek will run around doing nothing (like Beast).

    Boks to win by 20+

  • 46

    @ Nama:
Oh yes, FdP will kick his uppies (like Pienaar). Hopefully his service from the base will be quicker.

It’s just a mind game at this stage, the result has been decided a while ago already, Poiet needs to make amend!
    😉
No matter which clown HM picks, will have no impact on the outcome other than the margins
Comes the 4Nations time then we shall see who will be picked, as for now it’s just window dressing
    🙂

  • 48

    @ Nama:

Even a blind man can see FDP ‘s service is quicker.

As for the kicks let’s count them on Saturday.

    😆

    47 @ Hondo:
I’m sometimes, almost always, gobsmacked by what you say… and don’t know if you are taking the mickey out of things or are deadly serious.

If deadly serious, then you certainly have a unique and very warped way of looking at things, seeing conspiricy everywhere.

If it is taking the mickey out of things, it is somewhat ingenious… a bit of Albert Einstein mixed into a bag of fun…

Einstein and Hondo are polar opposites.

    Hondo and Martin Luther King?

  • 52

    50 @ gunther:
So, what you are saying in Hondo’s case, the formula is not E = MHondo²

  • 53

    @ gunther:
I’m not so sure about the blind man but true, if FdP doesn’t try to play spietkop-spietkop with the ref, his service is quicker.

Einstein once said: “If you can’t say it simply, you didn’t understand it well enough”
    🙂
Nothing to be serious about our contemporary rugby other than the wagers which I take On Line!
Do you REALLY believe the Test on Saturday will be a fair contest?
    Just asking 😉

  • 55

    54 @ Hondo:
    OK, I’ll say it simply… you’re a strange dude!

    Tounge-Out

  • 56

    @Hondo 54

Surely you are not implying that the only reason the Boks will win will be because Poite must make amends?

He might be more lenient and forgiving towards the Boks this time around ( he must still travel out of SA ) but even with a ref that might favor Wales, there is no reason why we should lose to them at home if we play decently and take the game serious

  • 57

Schalk Ferreira has been starting ahead of Guthro at Toulouse all season yet Guthro is Numero Uno for the Boks! Yeah, baby! 🙄

  • 58

Guthro was HM’s go to man during his tenure at the Bulls.

Think Guthro has limited opportunities left at test level and deserves his 50 test caps.

HM is paying him his dues for services rendered in the past.

  • 59

More like Pavlov’s dog than Einstein in truth.

  • 60

It appears the bookmakers have given the Welsh visitors a 13-point start on Saturday.

I think it might be closer than that – I must admit that I do not have immense faith in our current centre pairing (but I hope they prove me wrong).

But I still think the Boks will do more than enough to close out a victory.
