Frans Steyn was released from the Springbok squad at his own request on Tuesday and will not appear in Saturday’s match against Wales at Growthpoint Kings Park, Durban.
The player advised SARU officials that that he did not wish to be considered for the Castle Lager Incoming series. “The environment in the Springbok squad is fantastic and I would like to state categorically that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my team-mates is very good,” said Steyn.
Steyn – who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of Vodacom Super Rugby Series – said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future.
He indicated he would be available for the Cell C Sharks once the June internationals are completed.
“I have spoken at length to Frans and we are happy to accede to his request,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).
“He has asked for some time to consider his international playing future and we must respect that. Let me make it clear that he has not retired from international rugby, but he has requested a break from it.”
Roux added that Steyn had asked for privacy at this time.
“This is not an ideal situation, but, in other instances, sudden player absences through injury are not uncommon and I’m sure Heyneke and the selectors will adapt to his unavailability. Frans is now out of the squad and team management will respect his wish for privacy by not speculating on his decision or his likely return.”

With modern day contraception, even the kids birth could surely be planned to coincide with a 2 month timeframe?

jake whitr coached the boks to beat the all blacks. There is no way the sharks wont win this year 😀

Ja, well you know, like I said 😉

It only takes 1 “off day” to screw your teams’ season.
Stormers supporters can surely testify to that?
As a Lions supporter, it only takes one teams “off day” to make your season.
Bulls and stormers can also testify to that!

I’d like to that mid-fielder for Cheaters get a run for the Boks. Mapoe I think his name is.
..off to do some work… later…
Let’s not get carried away with that Fransie’s onslaught
The guy’s knees are on a borrowed time, playing rugby for a living is his only trade, it’s his prerogative to decide how to maximise his earning before he is on crutches?
The vigor of test rugby takes a high toll on his knees while the alternative pays better and demanding less from his body,
simple?
SARU may not be able to pay him his market value for the duration that his legs still holds, end of story!
And there are some great centres knocking on the door such as JPP and JdJ, all great replacements!
😉
160 comments and this isn’t even a live rugby thread … maybe frans should walk out of the boks more often?
162 @ cane:
Rayno Benjamin, who played No 12 for the Cheetahs this year… but who is actually a wing?
162 @ cane:
Mapoe must have been at every other SA Franchise since he was at the Cheetahs.
I think he last played for the Cheetahs when the ‘Canes last won Super Ru…..
Oh sorry, wrong stat.
Anyway, he hasn’t worn orange for a while. Currently (back with) the Lions.

crikey it’s not that easy

No,
it’s the Dude with the Lions I meant Groot.
I was very impressed.
But, Gunther was blaming “The Benjamin’s” for Seaman Steyn’s departure. So I now see the link.

Exactly right
Just that no one made the connection: Another Bok stalwart who realised he can get more for what ever rugby left in his injuries prone body and is now playing for big cheques after he had been proclaimed a damaged good by the Cheetahs?
@ Scrumdown:
No Scrum, I genuinely enjoy their approach to the game.
They are like the Highlanders in NZ. The have nots.
But don’t let that stop them playing attractive attacking rugby.

No Cane you’re still not with it.
The Benjamins Gunther was refering to are “Benjamin Franklin’s”, as on the USA monetary note. Hence the reference to Dollars.
175 @ cane:
Unfortunately neither the Highlanders or the Lions have won a great deal in the last 15 years or so.
When the Lions are on song they are a joy to behold. When they aren’t it’s like throwing a packet of lollipops amongst a buch of 15 kids and watching the results.
A lollipop scramble.
@ Scrumdown:
Cane is yanking your chain.
It’s Wednesday night there in Lower Hutt and he is balls deep in South African Sauvignon Blanc.

The latest on News24:
Steyn, SARU in money dispute
Cape Town – A dispute over money appears to be the reason behind Frans Steyn’s decision to pull out of the Springbok squad.
Steyn, 27, shocked the rugby fraternity on Tuesdaywhen he pulled of out the Boks’ Incoming Series in June.
Steyn – who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of the Super Rugby season – said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future.
According to the Volksblad website, Steyn is upset about a promise the South African Rugby Union (SARU) made to him when he returned from French club, Racing Metro, to play for the Sharks in 2012.
Due to the dispute with SARU, Steyn is currently earning less than half of what he could have made overseas. It is still unclear exactly what SARU’s promise to the player was.
Steyn’s withdrawal should not come as a surprise though, as it is reported that he already had an argument with SARU during the first Bok training camp in Durban two weeks ago. There he expressed his unhappiness before he got into his car and left the camp.
It remains unclear when Steyn will again be available to represent the Springboks.
The Boks tackle Wales in Durban on Saturday, with Jan Serfontein expected to be named at inside centre in place of Steyn.
178 @ gunther:
I have it out of the horses mouth that Cane has Blackadder blood running through his veins.
That being the case, depending on whether it is “Todd” or “Lord (as in “my manservant is Baldrick”)” Blackadder could make him “yanking my chain” either a laugh a minute or a tear a second.
Which action goes with which character depends on a number of issues, not least of which are your age and Rugby affiliation.
