Frans Steyn was released from the Springbok squad at his own request on Tuesday and will not appear in Saturday’s match against Wales at Growthpoint Kings Park, Durban.
The player advised SARU officials that that he did not wish to be considered for the Castle Lager Incoming series. “The environment in the Springbok squad is fantastic and I would like to state categorically that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my team-mates is very good,” said Steyn.
Steyn – who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of Vodacom Super Rugby Series – said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future.
He indicated he would be available for the Cell C Sharks once the June internationals are completed.
“I have spoken at length to Frans and we are happy to accede to his request,” said Jurie Roux, CEO of the South African Rugby Union (SARU).
“He has asked for some time to consider his international playing future and we must respect that. Let me make it clear that he has not retired from international rugby, but he has requested a break from it.”
Roux added that Steyn had asked for privacy at this time.
“This is not an ideal situation, but, in other instances, sudden player absences through injury are not uncommon and I’m sure Heyneke and the selectors will adapt to his unavailability. Frans is now out of the squad and team management will respect his wish for privacy by not speculating on his decision or his likely return.”

30 years ago when I was playing at Germistin Simmer, we used to get R30/week “petrol geld” in a brown envelope shoved in our tog bag after practice.
Nowadays most club lower league players get zip. “daar’s ni geld ni”.
Surely his Bok contract is being torn up as we speak?

I doubt very much…don’t be surprised if Frans still play in the world cup next year.
In soccer we had Benny McCarthey who also decided when and where he wanted to play for the national team…and because he was so good he got away with it…. same will most likely apply to Frans.. he might not be as brilliant as McCarthey used to be ( relatively) but he is still the type of player nearly any coach would love to have in his team especially during the real big matches.
morning everyone
I wonder how its going at the dark side
must be all out war in there!!
well I blame the coach
no, not jake white,
the other one!
@ Scrumdown:
Mannetjies Roux used to drive to Kimberley from Victoria West 3x per week in his old Ford 150 and Jannie Engelbrecht from Vredendal to Stellenbosch in his Valiant Regal…R30 for petrol… Those old wheels were heavy on the juice bru!

Cape Town – A dispute over money appears to be the reason behind Frans Steyn’s decision to pull out of the Springbok squad.
Steyn, 27, shocked the rugby fraternity on Tuesday when he pulled of out the Boks’ Incoming Series in June.
Steyn – who is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of the Super Rugby season – said that he wished for time to reflect on his Springbok future.
According to the Volksblad website, Steyn is upset about a promise the South African Rugby Union (SARU) made to him when he returned from French club, Racing Metro, to play for the Sharks in 2012.
Due to the dispute with SARU, Steyn is currently earning less than half of what he could have made overseas. It is still unclear exactly what SARU’s promise to the player was.
Steyn’s withdrawal should not come as a surprise though, as it is reported that he already had an argument with SARU during the first Bok training camp in Durban two weeks ago. There he expressed his unhappiness before he got into his car and left the camp.
It remains unclear when Steyn will again be available to represent the Springboks.
@ Pietman:
Henry Honiball the same.
@ Ashley:
I told you…money! At the root of all problems, except for women of course(mostly they go hand in hand though )
Ah, the plot thickens.
Bye-bye Fransie, close the door behind you please.
The difference between class and….erm….ja nee.
Amazing how a real legend of the game goes about his business and how a prima Donna does.
Willing to play club rugby where we have a player who is not even willing to represent his country, and we wonder why we suck hind tit to the All Blacks.
All Blacks flyhalf Dan Carter will warm up for the Rugby Championship by playing a club rugby game.
Carter will make his comeback to the game after a six-month sabbatical when he features in a minor club match in rural Canterbury province on Saturday.
Carter will play for the Southbridge club, where he began his career, in a local championships match against Glenmark.
The 32-year-old, who was allowed a sabbatical as part of his contract with the New Zealand Rugby Union, said he does not expect to play a full 80 minutes.
He said he will just “ease” his way back into it on what will more than likely be a heavy, wet track.
“I am probably only looking at 40 minutes or so, but it will just be good to get some game time.”
Carter played for Southbridge in 2009 when he returned from an Achilles tendon injury.

agree
still remember kaino in shock after we beat the all blacks at home.
the only thing he could get out after the game (no matter the question) was: “but he kicked from his own half!!”
I blame the parents.

no, I blame the government, sire
@ Ashley:
Them too.
Has anyone blamed the Referee yet?
nortierd @ 80
I think he was playing well (for the sharks) this year
84 @ cane: No, but it’s only a matter of time!
cane @ 84
hey!! hold on there!!
don’t do our complaining FOR us!! we were doing well before you interfered
but
here goes
I blame roman poite
He kicked 2 penalties in 2007 and 2 drop kicks against the Aussies in 2009.
He is the 3rd choice kicker for the Sharks after Lambie and Zeilinga, forced to kick now because they are injured.
The Sharks won their games through their forwards ( when they were still fresh ) and since Lambie’s injury their back line is nowhere.
He cried after not managing to convert some drops against the Bulls and couldn’t convert some kicks from not even closed to 50-70m against the Stormers.
If he was in the Bok team to slot drops from 50 plus meters out, he should be playing 15 not center ( he is no Jeremy Guscott )
A lot of speculation here…………………………”the environment in the Springbok squad is fantastic and I would like to state categorically that my relationship with Heyneke Meyer, the rest of the management and my team-mates is very good,” said Steyn………….”
Does this sound like a bitter and twisted young man?
No man,
it does not.
but on a serious note:
this situation reminds me a lot of the ecb, pietersen situation with all the “respect his privacy” press releases and stuff
just hope its gonna be handled better than the mentioned situation (wont hold my breath though)
