SpringboksSeven uncapped players, Damian de Allende, Lood de Jager, Cornal Hendricks, Teboho Mohoje, S’bura Sithole, Marcel van der Merwe and Callie Visagie, have been called up to Springbok duty as part of a 36-man squad for the Castle Lager Incoming Series next month.

The squad also includes experienced World Cup winners Schalk Burger and Victor Matfield, while there is a return to the Springboks for Schalk Brits, Juan de Jongh, Francois Hougaard, Lwazi Mvovo and Frans Steyn, all of whom last played Test rugby in 2012.

The national selectors have also kept a great deal of continuity. In total, 12 players who started the final Test of 2013, where the Springboks beat France in Paris for the first time in 16 years, have been retained in the squad.

However, notable omissions include Springbok captain and SARU’s Player of the Year in 2013, Jean de Villiers, who is out with a knee injury, and the Young Player of the Year for the last two seasons and IRB Player of the Year nominee last year, Eben Etzebeth, who has been given more time to fully recover from the foot injury which has kept him sidelined this entire season.

The Springboks will also be without one of their vice-captains, Adriaan Strauss, who has been suspended for three matches as well as the experienced Jaque Fourie, who started all three Tests last November but has been ruled out with an ankle injury and Pat Lambie, a regular member of the squad for the last two years.

“It’s never easy starting the international season without a number of key players, but it’s the same for our opponents as well and there are no excuses – we simply have to hit the ground running this week and make sure we start the season as well as possible,” said Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, who will name the interim captain next week.

“Injuries also provide opportunities for new players and from what I’ve seen at the training camp in Durban earlier this week, they are also raring to go.”

“Oupa Mohoje got an opportunity at the Cheetahs following injuries to Lappies Labuschagne, Philip van der Walt and Jean Cook, and he took his chance. At the Sharks, Stephan Lewies came in for the injured Pieter-Steph du Toit and he came very close to inclusion in this squad.”

“It was also wonderful to see the excitement in the more experienced players, who have tasted what Test rugby is about. Everyone knows we’re at the start of a challenging season but everyone is raring to get going.”

Meyer said that all of the uncapped players deserved their opportunity.

“Damian, Cornal, Oupa, S’bura, Marcel and Callie have all been in great form recently for their various Vodacom Super Rugby franchises, while Lood was very impressive before his injury and he underlined that with a great attitude and work ethic at the Durban camp,” said Meyer.

“Some of them have been on the national selectors’ radar for a bit longer, while others have been very impressive at our training camp in Durban. They all deserve their selection and now it’s up to them to make the most of it.”

“Damian and S’bura both bring utility value to the team, as they can play in more than one position in the backline.”

“Cornal, who was the SA Sevens Player of the Year in 2013, is very fast and has a couple of very special attributes, so we’re very excited to work with him and hopefully improve him as a player.”

“Upfront, we’ve been very impressed with Lood and Oupa recently. Lood is a no-nonsense lock who will learn a lot from Victor and Bakkies, while Oupa is a superb line-out option, very fast and good with the ball in hand.”

“Marcel and Callie have been part of a resurgent Bulls pack recently and their play in the set-pieces is very good. Marcel can play on both sides of the scrum, which makes him a valuable option in the squad, while he also carries the ball well and has shown he can steal ball at the breakdown. Callie brings superb line-out throwing and great scrumming power, while he is never shy to do the dirty work on the field.”

Meyer added that he is looking forward to welcoming Matfield and Burger back into the Bok fold.

“Last year we saw what it meant to Bakkies, Fourie and Jaque when they returned and they showed that age should not be any measure when it comes to Test rugby – if you have the goods and can perform at world-class level, you deserve to be selected,” said Meyer.

“Victor and Schalk have both been out of the game for some time and for different reasons. A year ago, Schalk’s playing future was in doubt, so it’s great to have him back in the Bok fold and I’m looking forward to working with him for the first time. Their excitement at the Durban camp was palpable, but also contagious. The younger players fed off that and I know they will add a lot of value to the squad.”

On the inclusion of Brits he said: “Schalk was part of our plans from the beginning. He is one of the best hookers in the world, is one of the nominees for Heineken Cup Player of the Year and brings heaps of experience with him.”

Strauss, who has been suspended for three weeks for an illegal tackle last weekend, will rejoin in the squad for the final week of the Castle Lager Incoming Series, when his suspension has ended.

Injured players who were not available for selection after featuring in 2013, are De Villiers, Etzebeth, Lambie (bicep), Fourie (ankle), Frans Malherbe (concussion), Scarra Ntubeni (foot), Chiliboy Ralepelle (knee), Frik Kirsten (neck), Pieter-Steph du Toit (knee), Franco van der Merwe (ankle), Arno Botha (knee), Pierre Spies (bicep), Louis Schreuder (hand) and Gio Aplon (elbow).

Juan Smith was also in the selection frame, but as he has been struggling with an injury in recent weeks, he requested the national selectors not to be considered.

147 @ MacroBok:Great thing about telly here is all the ‘+1’ channels, which mean channels that play everything an hour later, so I haven’t even looked at the IPL yet!

  • 152

Great win by the BaaBaa’s, Eng29/39Bar. Final score. Always nice when they win, and good rugby played all round

    149 @ Just For Kicks:
Me too, there is no denying he has good attributes as a coach, above average infact.

but he is embarrassing, and a snake, John Smit with the Help of Venter made some good pre season planning building squad depth, but Jake decided he wants to steamroll his way to the final with the same team, there has been injuries, but compared to other teams they have been pretty much really really lucky!

  • 154

I actually lost respect for him when he says he only wants to coach, NZ, Aus, SA or england, because those are the teams with the best chance of winning the world cup…

Jake would never coach “lesser” teams and build them into World Cup contenders.

  • 155

Right, off to watch some IPL, and blog on the Ipad, a few Pumarisms to be expected then.

    155 @ Just For Kicks:
will be a good final to win

  • 157

Should be a good chase, Kings XI have been my team this season, have been my team this season, so lets hope they bowl well. 200 to win for the Hasselhofs

  • 158

I have absolutely no idea how kkr made the final with Morkel as one of their regular bowlers lol

  • 159

    152 @ Just For Kicks:
Good to hear that, the Baabaas don’t get much to ‘gel’ as a team but sounds like they did that quite well today JFK, I like Dean Ryan as a coach and thought he did well when he came in for the temp job at Scotland assistant last season and was disappointed he didn’t stay. Pity for him things not going as well at his Worcester. I guess one thing in mitigation of England is that this was a much weakened team that was available to them.

  • 160

158 @ MacroBok:yup, he’s certainly a Jekyll and Hyde player. You just never know which one is going to turn up!

  • 161

Scotland’s Chris Cusiter and Alex Dunbar will not meet up with the team in Texas as they picked up injuries playing for Glasgow Warriors in the PRO12 final yesterday. Cusiter was not going to be in the squad for the games against Argentina and the Boks but Dunbar was one of the players who was picked for all 4 Scotland tests. Cusiter got a head knock and Dunbar a knee injury, hopefully not too serious and maybe they will join the squad later on tour. Dunbar will be replaced by Mark Bennett who I thought was unlucky to miss out on both squads for the tour. Grayson Hart replaces Cusiter, Hart was initially only selected for the tests squad to face Argentina and the Boks. I rate both these guys so hopefully they will stay on and face the Boks so we can see how they get on in test rugby against a top team.

Ladies FA Cup final – Arsenal 1/0 Everton – after about 39 min

  • 163

    159 @ Bullscot:
Definitely a much weakened team, so can’t read anything into it, was just good, typical, BaaBaa’s helter skelter rugby

  • 164

    161 @ Bullscot:
Surprised there’s anyone left in Scotland who can play rugby!

  • 165

    …that’s not injured!

  • 166

Goodie, that’s the big one gone.

  • 167

    165 @ Just For Kicks:
Yeah its been hard on the players the last few seasons with a relatively small playing pool, especially the Glasgow Warriors guys who did so well last season getting the PRO12 sem final then many of them making up the squad for the tour to SA, the autumn internationals then 6 Nations and then getting to the PRO12 final this season and now making up most of the squad that will play Argentina and the Boks, very little rest time for them in between the tours and the new season. Then some of their players have been playing 7s at times and some are in Commonwealth Games squad, coach Toonie has had a big job on his hands managing the players game time this year. Dunbar already had an injury this season so think it best if he doesn’t tour at all and gets a good long break as he is one of the key Scotland backs for next year.

  • 168

    KKR 6/1 chasing 199

  • 169

167 @ Bullscot:Thank heavens Jake White isn’t their coach – imagine the whinging then!!!

  • 170

Arsenal Ladies have a player called Danielle Carter, wonder if related to rugby’s Dan the man Happy

  • 171

    169 @ Just For Kicks:
May not have been as much of a problem as he may have done what Alan Solomons has done at Edinburgh and brought many of his players from SA with him which meant more rest for Scotland although an even smaller pool to pick from… Wink

  • 172

    @ Bullscot:
That is a hectic schedule, Jake White whould be “too good” to coach in Scotland

  • 173

    KKR 19/1 after 2

  • 174

    171 @ Bullscot:
Ironically that’s what he was tried to do at the Brumbies

  • 175

    @ ryecatcher:
Hi Rye. Good to hear from you. I am uite fine. Hope you are too.

Yeah, what can I say? I’m just not a fan. 😮 The boy has good qualities but his selfishness is not good for a team environment.

Commiserations on your team’s lost. You’ll understand that I was over the moon by us beating your team though. 😆

  • 176

I still cant get over how bad that sharks vs stormers game was yesterday, so little happened the the Stormers only had to play well for 1 minute to win it, the ten minutes before that was probably the worst ten minutes of rugby by any two teams this year.

  • 177

    172 @ MacroBok:
Hi Macro as there are only two fully professional teams here and one head coaching spot is already taken up by a South Africa (Alan Solomons at Edinburgh) don’t think there is place for him at the moment, as it is there is a section of rugby people that are not happy with there not being enough Scottish folk involved in the rugby set up here so think as long Solomons is at Edinburgh there will be someone with Scottish roots coaching Glasgow. Where I do see a potential role for Jake White would be in getting our school level rugby up a level so that the representative age group teams have a better base to choose from.

  • 178

    @ Bullscot:
France is trying their best to follow scotland though.

You do not want Jake 😉

  • 179

    Hi Scottie Hello

  • 180

    176 @ MacroBok:
It’s the first time this season that I have actually stopped watching a game because it was so poor.
Like insId on the thread yesterday, I hate that type of rugby, and even more, when it is played so badly.
