Losing Pollard and Swiel, those are just 2 fly halves, and keeping Grant eg.
I’m not sure if there was chest thumping, maybe relief that they didn’t lose?
I’m not impressed with the victory, thought on the day Wales were deserving of the win, but, when the All Blacks look dead and buried and are 13 points behind with 10 minutes left and they salvage a win, they are hailed as great. When we do it we are hailed as shit and the coach is shit etc.
that’s a bit of a double standard to me, the players weren’t good yesterday, yet still managed to pull off a win which is a positive.
When we play with fire and brimstone against the AB’s for 60-70 minutes only to lose in the last quarter, their superior fitness is used as an example of where they are ahead of us, so Wales yesterday played with the fire and brimstone, yet showed that guts and glory can only take you so far, the superior sides will find a way to win.

I’m not sure I agree with all the comments Heyneke made after the game, but it’s his call to decide what he wants to say to salvage some pride.

We also all know Walsh, we have seen him ref year in and year out, and I don’t think he had a particularly poor match, errors both sides, but fairly consistent, we know his crowning moments is being the center of the match. And he outdid himself yesterday with a monumental grand stand finish

Port Elizabeth – Junior Springbok captain Handré Pollard, who was named IRB Junior Player of the Year on Friday, and experienced Test hooker Adriaan Strauss will join the Springboks in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.
Pollard superbly led the South African Under-20s at the Junior World Championships in New Zealand. The Junior Boks twice beat the NZ U20s en route to the final, where they were edged 21-20 by England in Auckland on Friday.

All the best to Pollard in this but Pietman this is exactly what I was hoping wouldn’t happen. The man is young and must be physically and mentally tired after a really tough tournament in New Zealand, those 2 games against NZ and the game against Samoa and then especially the final against England would have been really taxing. So I was hoping that he would get a bit of a break, am always concerned that these youngsters get overplayed too early on while they are still growing and then they end up with lots of injuries. Maybe he is there just to spend some time in the Bok environment but with Steyn away now and who knows what Goosen’s injury status is he may well play against Scotland. Marnitz Boshoff is also with the squad so if Pollard does need to play hopefully he will just be on the bench and may not be needed at any stage in the game.
At least at the Bulls we have JLP so Pollard’s game time will surely be decreased for a time there.

My mistake I thought you were talking at the National level, I understand the frustration losing the likes of Swiel and Pollard
Well, things might changed now under Smal but that not guaranteed, you might end up with Kurt Coleman as the long term FH?
    🙁
I was surprised by Walses’ rugb yesterday, there was never any doubt about Walsh honours his ‘obligation’ (honour and Steve Walsh, Peyper etc should not be used in a one sentence), the WRU did nothing about it so for me it’s a ‘fair dinkum’
In rugby terms I call it something else though 😉

Pollard isn’t ready yet at the SR level, let alone the Test Level, you could see it when he put 2 matches together at the Bulls, Potgieter is far superior for now

    Hi man
    What try?
the replay clearly shows Hendricks never crossed the line and you saw it just like I did
If you mean a penalty try then it’s nonsense, there is no ‘Advantage’ in a penalty try situation, and I can’t remember such a Penalty Try ever awarded retrospectively?
Learning lesson from the Brice Lawrence incident, remember: what goes around comes around (to bite you back)

  • 642

    @ Hondo:#640
    Jeez Hondo.

If this is how Walsch goes about his business to “honours his ‘obligation’”, I think SARU should ask the IRB to appoint somebody else in heir games. I don’t think the players/management want to go through this kind of agony for 78 minutes of a game when the result has been decided beforehand (as per your claim).

    Iets raas in jou kop.

  • 643

    @ Hondo:
What do you make of the performance of Cornal Hendricks yesterday?

  • 644

I wonder if HM still thinks that Morne Steyn is one of the best FH’s n the world? Last week, behind a dominant pack, he was very good. Yesterday, with our pack under continuous pressure, he was his old, average self.

Fourie du Preez not much better either.
JPP…one good break but other than that he was below average.
Matfield…good in the line out as usual but other than that, not very involved.
    Flip…the less said, the better.
Schalk…still a afkop hoender. Runs around a lot but does vokkol.

  • 645

OH yes… still waiting for Janneman to take the “international rugby world by storm” as was promised 2 years ago.

See that Pollard has now been drafted into the squad because of his performances at the Junior World Cup. Wrong move.

Age group rugby is something totally different from senior/international rugby. Just ask Janneman.

    @ Hondo:
im talking about the welsh try where the player clearly rolled the ball oger the tryline yet it was given

  • 647

The Boks could only score 17 points (7 of which were a converted penalty try) playing 15 against 15.

Wales scored 30 points (7 of which were a bit dubious) playing 15 against 15.

    @ Nama:
its easy to claim a flyhalf is good behind a dominant pack, but would you give a few examples of modern day flyhalves that do well behind a struggling pack?

fdp’s problem is that he wants to try play this urgent type of gameplan that does not suit us so he regularly pushes passes that the other players are not there for.

matfield does a lot around the park there were a few times where the boks were under serious pressure and matfield fell back on cover defense to stop certain tries, he is also regularly making morentackles than in his entire career. to claim he is “not very involved” honestly bowls me me over, what do you want him to do? stand at center the entire game like wp crnters regularly do? he had a good game nothing any other lock in the world would have done better.

what about beast and jannie. their inconsistency in the scrum put us under serious pressure, and when you hear the crowd chant beeeeaaast three times a game you know there is some serious problems.

Overall is wasnt a good team performance especially how we got bossed at the rucks. but we went into the game thinking it will be an easy 50pointer and we just didnt commit for 70 minutes.

  • 649

    @ Nama:
I agree with you on pollard, while drafting him into the squad wont do much harm, it would be extremely disappointing if pollard played IF either boshoff or goosen is fit. If they are not though, who should we draft to play flyhalf at short notice?

  • 650

capped springbok flyhalves available? should we draft in peter grant?

  • 651

    @ Nama:
who would you play at 12 instead of serfontein? who consistently grts over the advantage line.

  • 652

we like to pretend we have such a huge playing pool…

  • 653

    player pool*

  • 654

    @ MacroBok:
Johnny Wilkinson, Dan Carter and even Cooper (on a good day) have done well playing behind packs who were losing the battle up frnt.

But Matfield IS playing more at centre than mixing it up in the tight stuff. Just go and watch the game again and look to see if you can find his camo headgear or no. 5 jersey among the forwards competing at the rucks. He is just not there.

I left out Beast, Jannine and Bissie because we all know that JW played them into the ground this year. Same with Alberts. Before he went of, he was absolutely nowhere.

  • 655

    @ MacroBok:#650
Why do you bring up Grant? Is it because I’m a Stormers supporter? You know better than that.

  • 656

    @ Nama:
I disagree on all those players. the wilko golden ear he was playing behind one of the most dominant packs in northern hemisphere history.

And the all blacks regularly if not 90% of the time have a very strong scrum.

When the reds won super rugby in 2011 their scrum dominated about everyone, they have regressed again with their injury troubles after that.

Vic once or twice saved our asses yesterday with his mobility and he makes a lot of tackles.

  • 657

    655 @ Nama:
grant is the only capped springbok I could think of at this stage. my point being there is not much else to pick from next week if boshoff and goosen is injured because they were already in the squad. at such short notice its difficult to just bring in a new player, unless in the future meyer picks 45 player squads for every four games. so at such short notice youd like to bring in someone with experience, and at this stage pollard is the only player who has been competitive this month.

That’s I take the voice from Pavlov’s Best friend?
    😉

  • 659

desperate measures if 4 first choice flyhalves are injured or busy with club commitments.

Im just asking who would you bring in if not pollard?

  • 660

    @ MacroBok:#651
Serfontein is there by default atm. No JdV and no De Allende.

I wasn’t questioning his inclusion in the team at this stage. I was trying to draw a parallel between him and Pollard wrt their performances at the JWC and the hysteria that followed after they did well in that tournament.

Two years after being named Player of the Tournament, Janeman is still trying to find his feet at SENIOR level. This, despite the fact that some kenners proclaimed that they “cannot wait for Jan Serfontein to take the international rugby world by storm next year”….in 2011 already.

Remember Joe van Niekerk? Harry Viljoen drafted him straight in the Bok team after he was also named Player of the Tournament at the JWC. Richie Mc Caw was the captain of the Junior Blacks at the same tournament.
