The SA Rugby Union (Saru) has denied reports that it had reneged on a contractual promise made to Springbok fullback Frans Steyn which led to his sudden withdrawal from the national squad on Tuesday evening.
“I can confirm that there was a dispute over mechanisms by which one element of Frans’s Springbok remuneration was to be paid,” Saru chief executive Jurie Roux said in a statement on Thursday.
“That issue was addressed. Some minor details remain to be sorted out, but they are not of such a scale as to be a cause for a major upheaval.”
It was reported on Thursday that the player’s father, Piet Steyn, told the newspaper that Saru did not adhere to an agreement that was made prior to him leaving French club Racing Metro in 2012.
“We have an agreement with players in respect of the rights of both employer and employee not to publicly discuss any contractual situation and I will not breach that,” Roux said.
“However, allegations have been made that affect the reputation of the South African Rugby Union and Frans Steyn, as an employee and person, and they cannot go unchallenged.”
On Tuesday, Saru said in a statement that Steyn was released from the Springbok squad at his own request and he did not wish to be considered for the Incoming Series which kicks off this weekend against Wales in Durban.
Steyn is expected to take up a contract in Japan at the end of the Super Rugby campaign and would be available for the Sharks once the June internationals were completed.
“Out of respect for Frans’s wishes, whatever other considerations may have been on his mind are not for me to discuss,” Roux said.
“I look forward to his return to playing in the near future in Vodacom Super Rugby as he has been a good servant to the Springboks and his franchise.”
@ Stormersboy:
Been keeping well. Managed to get engaged, and have discovered the trauma of wedding planning.
@ WP Till I Die:
Mazeltov!
Another good man down.
I left the whole thing up to the Miss and her mom, I made sure I had a tux and that my shoes were clean.
Much less conflict that way, and lets be honest, the day has very little to do with us in any event. 😉

My wife and I are “happily married”.
She’s happy, and I’m married!
@29 WPTID
Been missing in action since the Stormers game at the tank.

Wedding planning? Jeez boet, the only thing the groom has to do on the wedding day is to remember to pitch up, preferably a couple of hours before the bride.
The whole day belongs to the bride…..that’s sort of fair as seeing that the wedding night belongs to the groom
😀
scrumdown @ 27
en dis al wat jy werk per dag?
its not fair!
@ nortierd:
Ouch. I can see how Taute’s drop goal after the hooter could have hurt.
@ WP Till I Die:
We Stormers are so magnanimous in victory…..we are even trying to get Fern back just so that at least one Sharkvarkie can fight the good fight and return serve 😮
@ nortierd:
Speaking of returning serve – are poppa69 and Heavens Game still around?
Part of me kind of misses the Lonely Dove…heck, even E.T.

Ek flippin wens.
Dag begin so 04h45 elke oggend.
@40
Poppa is here, under Nga something or other.
The Lone Dove is alienating people on Rugby365, even manages to piss off his Shark brethren over there.
ET I will never miss.
I would have loved to have Skop’s take on the Kings Park game though 😀
right – this is enough from you lot about sharks fans going missing.
some of us have to keep the wheels of industry turning while you bunch idle around on a rugby site.
another thing – we aren’t all frans steyn acolytes – neither jake white.
the rest of the sharks boys will be back in their own good time.
probably after the wimpering weepee fanboys have all calmed down.
@43
@ Charo:
Welcome Charo, always nice to see you..
wimpinchina is still around…..
